COURSE COMMUNICATIONS Thus far, 2017 has provided some great growing conditions for the course at Black Creek Club and the timely rains have been greatly appreciated after the drought of 2016. The Bermuda fairways are now kicking into full gear and our focus will now turn to taming the turf weekly to provide a clean lie on a consistent, firm surface. One of my pet peeves is lush, grainy Bermuda grass that lays over and explodes when taking a divot. I want to feel the ground when walking on the fairways. This process will include weekly verti-cutting, double cutting every time that we mow, and judicious use of irrigation water. Any fertilizer will only be applied to areas that are slow to recover from cart traffic. With regards to our Bent grass greens, the stress season has begun and our efforts will now focus on sustainable management practices that will get us through the summer. This includes a process called venting which is simply punching some small holes in the greens to a depth that will allow the root system to breathe. We completed this first venting on Monday, 6/19 and will do so again in late July after our member/guest event. We have actually learned much over the last few seasons and have been able to increase our green speeds each year throughout the summer. But as we continue to adjust our use of growth regulators along with different rolling/mowing combinations, please remember, a fast green doesn t necessarily mean a good green. Our goal is to provide a quick surface, but also a trueness of roll that rewards good putting regardless of speed. Additionally, we want all of you and your guests to know what can be expected when coming to the course. We recently renovated some areas along the cart paths with new sod. The turf that we installed is called Tif Tuf Bermuda and years of research have indicated that this hybrid breed of turf is much more tolerant to traffic, drought, and somewhat more tolerant to shade. Some additional information can be found at http://www.usga.org/course-care/regional-updates/southeast-region/ tiftuf---a-new-bermudagrass-variety-for-golf-courses.html. Given the locations where this sod was installed, this will certainly be a good test of its tufness. A few things to look for in the coming weeks: Preparations for the City Metro and our own Member/Guest Tournament. Trimming of tall grass bunker banks Some minor repairs of small worn areas in fairways Second cutting of tall grass areas to begin late in the month Just keeping up.. -Scott Wicker Course Superintendent
