Even though the initial cost of a liquid-filled gauge is two to three times more than standard general equipment gauges, you can actually save money by using them! If you have to replace a gauge, you not only have the cost of the gauge, but you have the labor costs of installation. The table to the right shows how it calculates out assuming your labor costs are $35.00 including wages and benefits. And this doesn't include cost of inventory (you'll stock more general purpose gauges you'll use more), or cost of purchasing (you'll have to purchase general purpose gauges more often!) Rule of thumb is to select a gauge where your normal operating pressure appears at 12 o clock on the scale. Typically, you can accomplish this by selecting a gauge that is twice your intended normal operating pressure. Ideally, your normal operating range should fall within 25% to 75% of the scale. Question #2: What s the best way to determine the dial size I should use? There are two main things to consider. The first is space restriction. Most likely, you ll want to use the largest dial size allowable in the space provided. The second, and easier way to decide, is to find out what readable increments are preferred by the user/operator. Lesman can source gauges from 1" to 20" in diameter, to fit just about any need. You ll also need to choose a larger dial size when you require higher accuracy, so you can read smaller pressure scale increments. Question #3: What are safe temperature ranges for gauges? Ambient conditions for most gauges are -40 to 160 F for dry gauges, and -4 to 140 F for liquid-filled gauges. The temperature range for liquid-filled gauges can be extended somewhat by using a silicone fill instead of glycerine. Media temperatures can be much higher than the ambient temperature, but the media must be cooled before it enters the gauge. This can be accomplished using syphons, pigtails, diaphragm seals, or capillaries. Call for recommendations on your specific application. Question #4: How does temperature affect the accuracy of pressure gauges? For every 50 F the process temperature varies above or below 70 F, you will lose an additional 1% accuracy. So, if you install a process gauge (base accuracy equals ±0.5% span) in an application where the temperature is 120 F, your gauge will have an accuracy of ±1.5% span.

365 Prices reduced more than 20%!!! Here s a money-saving idea! One of our major steel mill customers was looking for a gauge that was rugged, readable and reasonably priced. They wanted to standardize on a gauge that would handle 80% of their applications. They had been stocking gauges in a variety of sizes and ranges. Maintaining this inventory was time-consuming and expensive. After field testing gauges from a number of manufacturers, they standardized on the P580L. It s RUGGED! Because the P580L is reasonable, the purchase cost of their gauges was reduced. Plus, inventory costs were reduced through standardization. Why not buy some to try them, and save money, too! Dial: 2 1 2 Case: Black glass-filled propylene Bourdon Tube: Phosphor bronze Accuracy: ±3%-2%-3% Window: Acrylic Connection: 1 4" NPT lower male and 1 4 NPT center back Liquid Fill: Glycerine Question #5: My media temperature is over 160 F. How do I lower the temperature? We suggest using syphons, pigtails, diaphragm seals, or capillaries to lower the temperature of the media going into the gauge. All are available through Lesman, and are easy to install. A good rule of thumb to use for coil syphons is this: For every foot of 1/2" diameter steel pipe, you will lower the media temperature by 100 F. If your media starts to solidify as it cools, a diaphgram seal is the only option. Question #6: My line pressure fluctuates and causes the pointer to jump all over. What can I do about it? If your medium is air or clean water, put in a gauge with a built-in restrictor or use a pressure snubber. If you get pressure spikes that continue to damage your instruments, put in a pressure limiter (look in our catalog under Pressure Gauge Accessories). 2 1 2 " Liquid Filled Plastic Case Gauges Range Number 1-4 5-11 12+ 1 4 NPT Lower Connection 30" HgVac- 0 136340 $27.75 $25.44 $23.13 0-15 PSI 136310 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-30 PSI 136311 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-60 PSI 136312 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-100 PSI 136313 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-160 PSI 136314 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-200 PSI 136315 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-300 PSI 136316 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-400 PSI 136317 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-600 PSI 136318 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-1000 PSI 136319 23.88 21.89 19.90 0-2000 PSI 142086 28.29 25.93 23.58 0-3000 PSI 138815 28.29 25.93 23.58 0-5000 PSI 138816 28.29 25.93 23.58 1 4 NPT Center Back Connection 0-15 PSI 136323 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-30 PSI 136324 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-60 PSI 136325 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-100 PSI 136326 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-160 PSI 136327 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-300 PSI 136329 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-600 PSI 136330 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-1000 PSI 136331 26.19 24.01 21.83 0-2000 PSI 142795 32.94 30.20 27.45 0-3000 PSI 142796 32.94 30.20 27.45 0-5000 PSI 142797 32.94 30.20 27.45 U-clamp panel mount versions are also available. Ordering a large number of gauges? Combine ranges to maximize your savings! For combined quantities of more than 12, call Lesman for additional discounts! Question #7: What happens when I overrange a pressure gauge? The sensing element in most gauges is a bourdon tube a metallic tube in a specific size and shape, straightened in a very predictable manner, to behave a known way when pressure is applied on the inside of the tube. If you overpressure the gauge, you run the risk of straightening the bourdon tube permanently, destroying the accuracy of the gauge. If you overpressure the gauge by too much, you run the risk of rupturing the bourdon tube and creating an unsafe situation. Question #8: There s a lot of vibration in my process line. How do I keep it from ruining my gauge? Vibration causes wear in the movement parts of your gauge, resulting in a gradual loss of accuracy and pointer failure. Consider using liquidfilled gauges, pulsation snubbers, or flexible hose and tube mountings.

Will a standard pressure gauge work? It depends on the size of the dirt. Anytime you have entrained solids in your medium, we suggest installing a diaphragm isolation seal on the gauge. You ll pay more for the gauge. But, in the long run, the lifetime cost of the gauge will be lower because you won t have to replace it nearly as often. Question #10: How do I select the proper diaphgram seal for my gauge? To find the right diaphragm seal, you ll need to know the following: (1) Your process connection: Do you need to fit an NPT thread, flange attached, or welded connection? (2) Material compatibility with process medium: Typically, your pipe and diaphgram seal wetted parts are made of the same material. (3) Operating pressure and temperature of your process: To make sure the proper diaphgram material and fill fluid are selected. (4) Instrument connection size: With all these facts, you can easily find the right diaphragm seal. If you need help, e-mail your requirements to. Question #11: Why should I use liquid-filled gauges instead of general equipment gauges (that cost less)? Anytime your process is subject to vibration, you should consider using a liquid-filled gauge. Putting a general equipment gauge on a vibrating air or water line will shorten the gauge s lifespan. By installing a liquid-filled gauge instead, you lengthen the gauge s useful life, reduce the number of gauges you use, and eliminate the cost of labor necessary to replace the gauge. Liquid-filled gauges offer a number of advantages: The liquid absorbs vibration and pressure spikes, reducing wear on the mechanics of the

The liquid lubricates all moving elements, dramatically reducing wear. Because most liquid-filled gauges are filled with non-aqueous liquid and are hermetically sealed, they perform in corrosive environments and are immune to moisture penetration and icing, and shock effects are lessened. Liquid-filled gauges enhance the reliability and integrity of the measuring system for long periods under extreme operating conditions. In the long run, the total cost of a liquid-filled gauge will be less than the cost of the general equipment gauges used for the same application. Question #12: How do I know what fill fluid to use? The type of liquid used to fill a gauge varies with the application. If your application is prone to high vibration, choose a fill fluid with a higher viscosity. A gauge s degree of dampening depends on the Range Number 1-4 5-11 545L Stem Mount: 1 4 NPT Brass Bottom Connection 0-30" HgVac 157600 $43.33 $41.44 30"-0-30 PSI 157601 43.33 41.44 30"-0-100psi 157602 43.33 41.44 0-15 PSI 157603 43.33 41.44 0-30 PSI 157604 42.52 40.67 0-60 PSI 157605 42.52 40.67 0-100 PSI 157606 42.52 40.67 0-160 PSI 157607 42.52 40.67 0-200 PSI 157608 42.52 40.67 0-300 PSI 157609 42.52 40.67 0-600 PSI 157610 42.52 40.67 0-1000 PSI 157611 42.52 40.67 0-1500 PSI 157612 44.88 42.93 0-2000 PSI 157613 44.88 42.93 0-3000 PSI 157614 44.88 42.93 0-6000 PSI 157615 44.88 42.93 546L Panel Mount: 1 4 NPT Brass Lower Back Connection 0-30" HgVac 157800 $50.51 $48.32 30"-0-100psi 157802 50.51 48.32 0-15 PSI 157803 50.51 48.32 0-30 PSI 157804 48.88 46.75 0-60 PSI 157805 48.88 46.75 0-100 PSI 157806 48.88 46.75 0-160 PSI 157807 48.88 46.75 0-200 PSI 157808 48.88 46.75 0-300 PSI 157809 48.88 46.75 0-600 PSI 157810 48.88 46.75 0-1000 PSI 157811 48.88 46.75 0-1500 PSI 157812 52.07 49.80 0-2000 PSI 157813 52.07 49.80 0-3000 PSI 157814 52.07 49.80 0-6000 PSI 157815 52.07 49.80 Need a different fill fluid? Call Lesman. operating requirements it must meet: pointer response time, pressure extremes, and vibration. If icing is a problem, you ll more likely want to use a silicone oil fill, which has a low viscosity, even at temperatures to -76 F (-60 C). Silicone fill is also good for processes exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations. The recommended allowable operating range of USP glycerine fill is -4 to 140 F (-20 to 60 C), DC-200 silicone: -40 to 140 F (-40 to 60 C). Question #13: Why does the glycerine in my liquid-filled gauges turn green over time? It s harder to read. When you buy glycerine-filled gauges, make sure the fill fluid is 99% pure glycerine. Sometimes, a supplier will mix water into the glycerine. If he uses tap water, not distilled water, the minerals in the water will start to culture inside the gauge, turning the glycerine green or black. Lesman uses 99% pure glycerine in all our glycerine-filled gauges.
