Weymouth Country Club Membership Newsletter July 2015 Page 8 Turf Talk with Superintendent, Kenny Aukerman FROM THE GREEN Record rainfall in June has changed the focus of the maintenance department. Saturated soils have caused many problems for the turf. The hardest detail we need to keep up with is trying to keep up with the mowing. Mowing in these conditions is difficult. We have to inspect areas before mowing to make sure we do not damage them. When the soil is saturated for long periods, the air space in the soil disappears and soil structure is lost. Without some air space in the soil, roots from the turf start to die. You can see the turf in low areas on the fairways starting to turn yellow. We are trying to be proactive by punching holes in the soil to help open them up. This will only help if it stops raining. You will notice that we have already solid tined greens and top dressed. The top dressing is only to help match the growth of the turf and not to fill the holes. It would not help to fill the hole that we are trying to open and let air in. Rolling will help level the surface and the top of the hole will cover back up with grass in a couple of days. We will also be working on areas in the fairways. We may have to do some over seeding in areas that have been sitting in water for long periods. For the time being, please replace all divots in fairways. They will heal much faster than filling with sand. That is why there is no divot mix on carts. Divot sand will be put on carts when soil conditions show that replacing divots will not survive. At that time only lightly cover divots so that any remaining grass roots can grow through. Most everyone has become aware of the dead Ash trees on the course. The trees are dying from an insect called the Emerald Ash Borer. We have treated some for this condition, but we have just delayed the problem. Presently, we have removed 100 trees and stumps with approx. 100 more to remove. The loss of most of these trees is not affecting the play of the course. There are, however, several holes where we need to replace trees. We will be replacing 5 trees this year, with more needed. These replacement trees will be 6 caliper, approx... 30-40 feet high at a cost of $600 installed with large tree spade. We have started a tree fund that our owners are matching. Proceeds from a dunk tank July 4 and various skins game for the remainder of the year will be used for this fund. Let s hope the rains are finished and the rest of the year is dry. It s easier to apply water than to remove it.
