History, Mystery and Eco Systems An Outer Banks Itinerary for a Student Field Trip (includes Cape Hatteras National Seashore) Day One Afternoon arrival to the Outer Banks of North Carolina 2:30pm Wright Brothers National Memorial, See where on a cold day in December, 1903 Wilbur and Orville Wright changed the world forever as their powered airplane, the Wright Flyer, skimmed over the sands of the Outer Banks for 12 seconds before returning to the ground. See the flight museum which tells story of the Wright s accomplishments as well as replica of the 1903 flying machine. Activity: Listening to the flight room talk, walking the actual flight line, walking to the top of Monument; making homemade kites and flying them at the site. Address: 1000 N. Held during the Spring and Fall, this ondemand program takes groups on a guided walking tour of the grounds of the first English Colony in America which is both fun and educational! Astral Plane Investigations, led by nationally renowned paranormal psychologist Trevor Janzen, lead groups in a research expedition of The Waterside Theatre. Learn the mysteries of the island, the history of the colony and perhaps even meet the ghosts of those who lived here. 1

Day Two (Please note this will be a long day!) Today s journey will be a long day as you travel through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Highlights will be the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. 9:15am Bodie Island Lighthouse Completed in 1872, this Lighthouse sits on the north side of Oregon Inlet near the northern border of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The familiar black and white horizontal striped structure was partly built of materials leftover from the construction of the newest Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Standing 156 feet tall and equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens, it flashes its 160,000 candlepower beacon 19 miles over the ocean. Free admission to the grounds; the lighthouse is now open for climbing, minimal fee to climb. Address: 8210 Bodie Island Lighthouse Road Nags Head, 27959, 252.441.5711 10:00 am Chicamacomico Life Saving Station (1 hour) A predecessor to the US Coast Guard, Chicamacomico is one of the most complete US Lifesaving Station sites in the nation, see historic buildings and a boathouse that housed the service that was the predecessor to the United States Coast Guard. Hear the history of daring ocean rescues by brave men who dedicated their lives to the sea. Activity: Interpretive talks such as America s Forgotten Heroes, the men of the lifesaving station Address: 23645 NC HWY 12, Rodanthe, NC 27968; 252-987-1552 11:45am Visit the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (1 hour) See tallest brick beacon on the American coast with its black and white stripes, it stands at 208 feet high. Learn the marvelous history, which includes its half-mile move in 2000 away from the ocean. Admission to the grounds are complementary; however there is a minimal cost to climb. Address: 46368 Lighthouse Rd Buxton, 27920, 252.473.2111 Picnic Lunch on the grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse 1:30pm Arrive at the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry Terminal. Before getting in line, visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Located at the ferry docks, a unique museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the rich maritime history of the Outer Banks and the more than 2,000 known shipwrecks that rest of our coast. See cannons from Blackbeard s Queen Anne Revenge, an Enigma machine from the U-85, ship models and many other artifacts. Activity: Behind the scenes tour of artifacts not seen by the public. 4:00pm Jockey s Ridge State Park (1½ hrs) View the tallest living sand dunes on the East Coast. Learn how these shifting sands move with the wind at the visitor s center/museum. There are three self-guided trails in the park that discuss the 3 ecosystems of Jockey s Ridge. Return to your oceanfront hotel Day Three 9:00am Jennette s Pier, Nags Head, This state-of-the-art, LEED certified, 1,000-foot concrete pier features green technologies like wind turbines. The one-of-a-kind educational ocean pier features top-notch educational programs. Current Programs offered at Pier: Wonders of Wind: In this program students learn how to harness energy from the wind, advantages and disadvantages of wind energy, the importance of clean wind and ideal locations to install wind turbines to maximize energy output. Through construction of their own turbine and discussions about alternative energy, participants in this program gain an understanding of how this technology works and its importance for future energy generation. Solar Science: Discover and discuss solar power as an energy resource. Students design, build and evaluate a solar device and discover how solar panels maximize efficiency. Intertidal Explorations: Students discover all the various types of animals that call the intertidal zone home. Plankton Investigations: Students learn how to use scientific instruments and discover the microscopic organisms that are vital to the marine food chain. Ocean Currents and Upwellings: Students discover how convection currents work and why they are important in a marine ecosystem. Pier Fishing 101: Learn the basic skills necessary to catch a fish. 12:45pm Roanoke Island Festival Park Downtown Historic Manteo Here you will see the Elizabeth II, a 69-foot sailing vessel representative of those sailed to the New World in 1585. Also we will visit the Roanoke Island Adventure Museum and Settlement Site where you can see what life was like for those early explorers as they arrived on Roanoke Island. Address: 1 Festival Park, Manteo, 27954; 252.475.1500 2:15pm North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, Journey through coastal freshwaters to see river otters, turtles, and American alligators. Explore saltwater habitats from grass flats to Gulf Stream waters. Gently stroke a stingray or touch a hermit crab at the touch tanks. Watch fish and sharks cruise by the 35-foot long viewing window of the 285,000-gallon "Graveyard of the Atlantic" tank containing a one-third scale replica of the USS Monitor. Living on the bounty of the surrounding waters while working the land to feed their families, islanders were independent and enterprising. Hundreds of species of migrating birds have been spotted within the 13 mile span. From the spring to autumn, a large variety of wading, shore and upland birds can be seen.
