He decided t place large sheets f plywd ver the penings. While placing a panel f plywd he failed t ntice that ne edge f the panel was just barely supprted at the side f the pening. Later, he stepped n the edge f the panel. The panel slipped, tilted and drpped him many feet belw t his death. One way t prevent this type f accident is t tack-nail each panel with a few nails t secure it prperly in place, as it is placed. In this case tw r three pennies wrth f nails wuld have saved that man s life. But, was it nly the lack f a few cents wrth f nails? Abslutely nt! It was nt nly the lack f a few nails, but mre imprtant it was the lack f safety sense r a lack f simple knw hw that killed that man. In almst every jb there are pssibilities f injuries-even death. Take it upn yurself t questin everything as yu wrk. Size up each jb, each machine, each tl yu use, and apply yur best safety sense t everything yu d. These meetings are an essential element f the Prject s Safety and Health Training Prgram. It is a prven fact that prjects which cnduct gd meetings attain better safety recrds than thse that have pr, r n safety meetings. In rder t assist in the preparatin f the material, and in the presentatin a safety training meeting, the fllwing guidelines are prvided: Preparing fr the Meeting Select the tpic fr the meeting several days in advance s that yu will have a chance t becme familiar with the subject t be discussed. Yu shuld be able t present the talk in a cnvincing manner withut reading it. Schedule the meeting at the same time every week, if pssible, and hld it right in the wrk area. These meetings are generally 5 t 15 minutes in length s seating is nt imprtant. Hwever, make sure everyne can easily see and hear yu. A gd time t hld the meeting is just after a shift begins r immediately fllwing the lunch break. Just prir t the meeting, gather all the material and/r equipment yu need. When pssible, use the actual demnstratins t illustrate yur pints. Fr example, if yu are talking abut fire extinguishers, have ne with yu t shw what it lks like and hw it is used.
