Today s Result Tennessee 45 Georgia 19 Post Game Notes Oct. 10, 2009 Neyland Stadium Knoxville, Tenn. Attendance: 103, 261 Tennessee defeats Georgia 45-19 to improve to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs fall to 3-3 and 2-2 in the league. The win improves UT to 21-16-2 in the all-time series and 11-8-1 all-time in Knoxville. The 45-19 final score is the fifth in a row in the series to be at least a two-score margin. The Vols are 3-2 in those contests. The last one-score margin of victory in the series was a 19-14 UT win in 2004. Tennessee is now 13-3 on Oct. 10. Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin picks up his first career league win with the victory. Hardesty Continues Stellar Play Senior tailback Montario Hardesty scored a rushing touchdown for the sixth-consecutive game and finished with 93 yards on 20 carries. Hardesty moved up four spots to 20th in school history as he now has 1,714 career rushing yards. His 19 career rushing scores rank 14th in school history. Jones Posts Big Day Junior wideout Gerald Jones caught two touchdown passes, including a seasonlong 51-yard catch in the third quarter. The TD receptions were his first of the season and the sixth and seventh of his career. Jones also caught a 28-yard pass from Crompton to set up Tennessee s third touchdown. Jones finished with five receptions for 105 yards to become Tennessee s first 100- yard receiver since Lucas Taylor posted 134 yards vs. UAB in 2008. His 105 yards were a career high, surpassing his previous high mark of 75 yards set vs. Auburn on Oct. 3. Noting the Tennessee Offense The Vols scored 45 points in the game, which is their most vs. an SEC opponent since they scored 51 vs. Georgia in 2006. Senior wide receiver Denarius Moore caught his second touchdown of the season, a 33-yard reception in the second quarter. It was Moore s fourth career touchdown reception. He tied a career high with four receptions in the game. Freshmen Bryce Brown and Marsalis Teague each scored touchdowns, Teague on a 5-yard strike from Crompton in the second quarter and Brown on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Brown has two rushing TDs on the year and Teague has two through the air. Noting the Tennessee Defense Tennessee held Georgia to 241 total yards and just 89 rushing yards. Tennessee has held the Bulldogs under 100 rushing yards for the second time in three meetings and for the fourth time since 2000. The Bulldogs were held without an offensive touchdown, scoring touchdowns only on a kickoff return and an interception return. Georgia was held to just five first downs and just 85 total yards in the second half. The Vols forced three turnovers, which ties for their season high (Western Kentucky). After being outscored 32-14 in the third quarter through five games, Tennessee outscored the Bulldogs 17-7. Georgia was held to just nine yards on 14 plays in the quarter. Tennessee picked off two Joe Cox offerings for the Vols first multiple-interception game of the season and also added seven pass break-ups, which was a season high. Junior defensive end Chris Walker registered his second interception of the season (and career) on a tipped pass in the first quarter. It was his third pass defensed of the season. Dennis Rogan picked off Cox to open the second half. It was his second career pick and his first since the 2008 game at Auburn. Junior safety Eric Berry posted a fumble return of 46 yards in the fourth quarter. Berry now has 101 career fumble return yards to go with his NCAA-best 487 career interception return yards. He finished 20-of-27 for 310 yards.he completed 12 of 15 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. He threw his first interception since the Ohio game (88 attempts) in the the third quarter. Crompton s passer rating on the day was 212.0, while his season rating entering the game was 114.20 and his career rating was 107.21. Senior linebacker Rico McCoy led the team with nine tackles. He has led the Vols in stops in three-straight games and 17 times in his career. Miscellaneous Notes Denarius Moore earned the first start of his career. He had played in 30 career games prior to earning the start vs. Georgia. Tennessee gave up a 100-yard kick return for the first time since Nathan Jones of Rutgers took a kick back for a score in 2002. The Vols have given up just six 100- yard returns in school history. The attendance of 103,261 was the largest of the season through five home games. Junior tight end Luke Stocker set a career high for receptions and receiving yards with four catches for 68 yards. He surpassed his previous career high of 46 yards set vs. Auburn on Oct. 3 and his previous career high of three receptions vs. Florida in 2008.

Georgia Post-Game Notes: Oct. 10 at Tennessee Taking It To The House Again: Sophomore cornerback Brandon Boykin had the second 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown this season today to even the score at 7-all in the second quarter. Boykin and former Bulldog Gene Washington share the mark now with two kickoff returns for touchdowns in a season. In 1973, Washington s two covered 96 yards vs. Clemson and 86 yards vs. N.C. State. Boykin had already broken the school record after taking a kickoff 100 yards back for a touchdown versus South Carolina. He is the first SEC player to have two 100-yard kickoff returns in one season in SEC history. He finished the day with 128 returns yards (32.0 avg) on four kicks to give him 529 kickoff return yards this season. Boykin s return versus the Vols also ties the longest scoring play on the road in school history. Georgia had a 100-yard punt return for a touchdown in 1952 at Vanderbilt by Jimmy Campagna and a 100-yard INT return by Charlie Britt in 1959 versus Florida in Jacksonville. Since 1941, the NCAA put a maximum length on all plays at 100 yards. Points Off Turnovers: Opponents have now scored 71 points off 16 Bulldog turnovers this year. The Bulldogs are -11 in turnover ratio. Georgia has converted five turnovers into 13 points after Rambo returned his INT for a TD against the Volunteers. Georgia gave up one interception in the first quarter on a tipped pass from Bulldog quarterback Joe Cox. Cox threw another pick early in the second half. Senior SE Michael Moore fumbled a catch in the fourth quarter, which led to a TD. Moore had six catches for 49 yards. NCAA Leader Drew Butler On Target Once Again: Sophomore punter Drew Butler had to punt six times for a 49.8 average with four covering 50+ yards and one inside the 20. His first punt was his longest at 61 yards. He came in today leading the nation with a 49.8 average. Rambo Tallies INT, TD: Redshirt freshman safety Bacarri Rambo caught a tipped passed for an interception and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. This was Rambo s second career INT and the first defensive TD for the Bulldogs this year. Georgia has had four INTs this year with Boykin also having two. This was the first INT return for a TD since Darryl Gamble returned a pair of picks for scores at LSU in 2008. Renner Blocks A Punt: Redshirt sophomore split end Zach Renner blocked a punt with :23 seconds left in the opening half to give the Bulldogs two points on a safety as it went through the endzone. This was the third blocked punt of his career after he tallied one against Alabama and Arizona State in 2008. Renner tied the school record for blocked punts in a career along with Corrie Collier, Kendrell Bell and David Pollack. Renner s latest punt block was the 17 th for the Bulldogs in the Mark Richt era. Walsh Drills Another 50+plus: Sophomore PK Blair Walsh drilled a 52-yard field goal late in the second quarter. He is 5-for-8 from 50 yards or more in his career and 3-for-3 from that distance in 2009. A.J. Leading The Way: Georgia sophomore FLK A.J. Green led the Bulldogs with 60 yards receiving and tied his career-high with eight catches. It was the third time he had eight receptions in a game. Freshman WR Marlon Brown had his first career reception on a 9-yard catch in the 2nd quarter. Starters: Freshman TE Arthur Lynch started the first game of his career. The Bulldogs started two tight ends on offense, six linemen and no wideouts after starting their first drive on their own 1-yard line. Next Week: After today s 45-19 loss, Georgia (3-3, 2-2 SEC) travels to Nashville, Tenn., for an SEC matchup with Vanderbilt on Saturday, Oct. 17. Vanderbilt plays Army today. The Bulldogs have won 13 out of their last 14 games versus the Commodores, including a 24-14 homecoming win in 2008. # #

Tennessee Quotes Head Coach Lane Kiffin Opening Statement: Very big win for us to get our first win at home and an SEC game, it was really powerful. This is a big time match up for us. (Georgia) is a state we do a lot of recruiting at so it was very important for us. I don t know all the Tennessee history and traditions of all the matchups nor do I ever pretend to, but Georgia is one of the great teams in this conference. I told (the team) that to me, this is the biggest matchup. To me, Georgia, because of what we need to do in recruiting, will be the biggest matchup for this staff and for our team, so it was a great win for us. I think the storyline of the day is the defense and I hope it doesn t get missed. The score doesn t really show it. But think about this, the defense didn t give up many points. They gave up a 52 yd field goal but they never got inside the red zone. I don t know that I ve ever been a part of a game that the defense didn t let a team into the red zone one time. So when you win a game 45-19 and play pathetic on special teams, that says a ton about your defense. The second thing behind that is Jonathon. To see Jonathon play so well was really great. Four touchdowns and 300 yards passing vs. a very talented defense was great to see. On Jonathon Crompton: First of all you talk about their defense. What happened in the game was, you re going to give Jonathon a lot of credit today which is deserving. But I ve sat up here and told you before that whenever you win, the quarterback gets too much credit, and whenever you lose, he doesn t get enough and gets killed. What happened today was he played really well. But why did he play well? Guys made plays for him. Denarius makes a play and breaks a tackle and goes and scores. Gerald jumps over a guy and makes a play. So I ve said time and time again, if we get our passing game on the same page and guys make plays that help the quarterback a ton, it builds his confidence. And you saw him, as the game went on he started forcing some balls in there in a good way, because he had the confidence to make the plays. And obviously we kept him on the run a lot today. We did not sit him in the pocket. That is one of the most talented defensive lines that you could have. Very physical guys, so the last thing we wanted to do was sit in the pocket. Really, we hardly dropped back and passed at all. Unfortunately, the interception was one of the few attempts. On the UT defense: We talked about that we needed to stop the run, even though I think they were 105 th in rushing coming in. But we needed to stop the run and make them try and throw the ball. And we needed to take away A.J. (Green), so we had some different coverages we d played before to try and take him away and to hardly ever leave him matched up because he is a great player. It was good to see our guys respond, and it was good to get turnovers. I can t remember winning the turnover margin since the first game of the year. We lose the turnover margin every game, so we talked about that being a huge thing always, but especially this week. Georgia is one of the few teams worse than us in turnover margins so we knew that would be a big part of the game. On the UT receivers: They really responded and had a good week of practice. We had talked about stepping up. We had one less receiver this game so we needed guys to step up and play some more plays and they did that. On special teams practice during bye-week: I don t know what more you can do on kickoff coverage than we did this week. Unfortunately, we got momentum and then they got a 100-yard return again. So, we ll have to look at the film and figure something out. We put everybody that we could on that team to try and make a play, so we re going to have to figure it out. Obviously, the safety on the blocked punt, we got beat inside on that. It was very disappointing. S Eric Berry Opening Statement: Coach made a big emphasis this whole week about he wanted us to beat Georgia, how much we had to prepare to beat these guys. He made it very clear to us what he wanted us to do today. You saw that today. On the fumble return: Coach says good things happen when you run to the ball. I was running to the ball and saw it come out, and I was just trying to make a play for the team. I think the crazy part about it was how excited the whole defense was to turn and block. Those guys were running faster than me, and I had the ball. It s just amazing how unselfish our team is and how unselfish our defense is. RB Montario Hardesty On preparations for Georgia: There was big emphasis put on this win all week. Coach said this one was going to be for our seniors. He didn t want us to lose to Georgia, and he wanted to start a trend of always beating Georgia. I think we took those words to heart and had a great week of preparation. You could see Crompton looking real confident in practice. You don t go to Saturdays and just turn the switch on. You could see it building up in practice. We just played with great energy today.

Georgia Quotes Head Coach Mark Richt Opening Comments: Right now I can tell you Tennessee did a wonderful job. They played better, tackled better. It s very obvious that their team was the better team today. We ve got a long way to go to become a good football team right now. We ve got to get back to work, continue to fight and find a way to beat Vanderbilt. That s where we re at right now. On Georgia s offensive struggles: I think you have to give credit to Tennessee s defense, first and foremost. They played at an extremely high level. We were able to make plays here and there, but nothing consistent. Tennessee tried not to give up anything big to see if we could drive the field. On a consistent basis we weren t able to put enough plays together to put it in the end zone. On whether he was surprised at Tennessee s ability to throw the ball: Not really. I think eighty percent of the yards they had were off the bootleg and play action. We geared to stop the run, and didn t adjust very well to it. We did a little better job in the second half, but not really. So when the quarterback is running free and the receivers are running free, we ve really got to put it on them, and Jonathan (Crompton) did a great job today. On the play of Tennessee QB Jonathan Crompton: I don t know if they expected to put their entire gameplan behind him. I m sure they thought he would be a part of it, but when it started out so successfully, they said Hey, let s stick with it. On Georgia s struggles running the football: It s difficult to mount any sort of sustainable drive if you don t run the ball well. For our offensive system to be successful, we ve got to run the ball well. It s just not there right now. We ve got some relatively young backs, but we ve got a ways to go. SS Bacarri Rambo On his interception return for a touchdown: I got it in my hand and I was like let s go. I m used to playing offense and used to having the ball in my hand. WR A.J. Green On why the offense struggled: I can t tell you. We ll go back and watch the film and see what we did. Sometimes you just can t get on a roll. Sometimes it just happens like that. On the Tennessee defense and what they did to slow Georgia down: No different than what anybody else is doing. They were rolling the safety on my side, stuff like that. No different than anybody else. KR Brandon Boykin On his second 100-yard kick return this year: I feel like anyone can do it when you have as big of holes as that. It s just a matter of running the ball. I m blessed to get that two times in a row, let alone in one season or in anybody s career. That was the bright spot. We did a good job of blocking early, but we lost the game. We just got to go back and find out what we did wrong. QB Joe Cox On Tennessee s passing game: We don t watch their offense on film, but we heard they run the ball a lot and try to run the ball right at you. And they come out slinging it. They looked good, they had a good game. On what they do in practice this week to get better: Everything. We got a lot of fundamentals to work on, just little stuff, little mistakes that shouldn t be made. We re going to have to work on all that this week and get ready to play another game. It sucks, but this one is over. We just have to look forward to next week and another game. On Tennessee s defense: They had a good defensive line and really good linebackers. And then Berry is blitzing some too. They did a good job of finding ways to get to the quarterback.
