The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. Hogan is entering his third year as Coastal Carolina s head women s soccer coach. He was named the program s fourth head coach in January of 2011. Coastal is coming off a dramatic improvement under Hogan during his second season in 2012, notching eight more victories than the previous year. The Chanticleers finished 10-9 overall and went 7-4 in Big South play, including a perfect 5-0 mark at home in which it outscored its opponents 12-1 and knocked off three teams that were in first place at the time. The Chants decreased their goals allowed from 40 in 2011 to a school-record 20 and posted eight shutouts, the second-most in school history while surrendering the fewest shots of any Big South team. Hogan coached three Chants to All-Big South honors, as forward Kacey Kelley was named to the first team, while midfielder Fia Jonsson and defender Cami Skladany were selected to the second team. Jonsson was also tabbed the league s Freshman of the Year. Additionally, Kelley and Skladany earned conference Player of the Week honors during the season. Hogan s first season saw Coastal finish with a 2-15-2 record as the Chanticleers fell short in numerous one goal games. Coastal piled up a season-high three goals in a rout of VMI and backed up its performance with a thrilling 1-nil defeat of UNC Asheville. Under Hogan s direction, nine different Chants found the back of the net with three players doing so multiple times. The season also saw Alyssa Clark earn second team All-Big South honors for her standout defensive efforts along with her teamhigh three assists. Additionally, Cami Skladany garnered Big South Defensive Player of the Week plaudits for the week of Aug. 30 after she made a stellar defensive save against Georgia Southern. Freshman goalkeeper Saundra Baron made an immediate impact as she tallied 55 saves, which ranks ninth all-time in the Coastal annals. Hogan was introduced as the fourth head women s soccer coach in Coastal Carolina history on Jan. 5, 2011. We are extremely excited to have Paul join our athletics family at Coastal Carolina, Yurachek said. Paul s experience with building programs into contenders on the national level, coupled with his recruiting prowess, made him stand out among a great group of candidates. Paul Hogan Head Coach University of Charleston (W.Va.), 1995 Third season at Coastal Carolina 12-24-2 Sixth season overall 47-41-9 He demonstrated to us a clear plan on how to build a complete championship program - one that has been successfully tested at other University s - and we are excited to help him execute that plan. He will be a great leader for the young women on our soccer team and a great part of the Coastal Carolina community. Prior to Coastal, Hogan spent the previous 10 seasons at the University of Colorado under head coach Bill Hempen, the last five as associate head coach. He helping the Buffaloes compile a 104-64-24 (.604) record and a national ranking at the end of the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008 seasons. I am thrilled for the opportunity to join the Coastal Carolina family and community and lead the women s soccer program, said Hogan. The rich athletic traditions and academic excellence coupled with a great campus location make Coastal Carolina a school full of exponential potential. The women s soccer program has been successful since its inception, and I look forward to challenges of meeting the standards set by the previous coaches and taking Coastal Carolina women s soccer to the next level. Hogan was hired at Colorado in 2001. Two years later, Hogan helped direct the Buffaloes to a 2003 Big XII regular season title, the first in school history, and Big XII Tournament Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In his 10 years, the Buffaloes competed in six NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Sweet 16 during the 2006 season. During Colorado s 14-6-4 season of 2006, the Buffs were ranked 15th nationally in total attendance and second in the Big XII. In addition to his duties as associate head coach on the Boulder campus, Hogan also spent nine seasons coaching the Colorado Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams. Prior to his arrival in Boulder, Hogan spent three seasons at Allegheny College where he guided the Gators to a 35-16-7 (.686) overall record and 17-6-2 (.739) North Coast Athletic Conference mark, while producing 16 All- NCAC players. His three Gator teams finished no lower than third in the final NCAC standings and his 1999 squad won a school-record six conference matches, a feat duplicated by the 2000 team, earning Hogan conference Coach of the Year accolades with his student-athletes earning NCAC Newcomer and Offensive Player of the Year postseason honors. Hogan made the leap to head coach in April 1998 from Duke where he was an assistant for the 1996 and `97 seasons. He assisted the Blue Devils to a two-year record of 28-11. In 1997, Duke finished 15-5-0, including a 4-2-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action, and won the ACC tournament championship. Over his two seasons, Hogan helped coach three All-Americans and 11 All-ACC selections. Previously, Hogan spent one season contributing at his alma mater, the University of Charleston (W.Va.), as a volunteer assistant. He helped Charleston to a 17-3 record and an NCAA Division II playoff berth in 1995. Hogan graduated from Charleston in 1995 with a bachelor s degree in sports science. There, he was a three-time All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection at goalkeeper. He earned All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association in both 1993 and 1994, and led the Golden Eagles to WVIAC championships in 1992 and 1994. Born August 22, 1972, the Monroe, N.Y., native is a 1990 graduate of Washingtonville High School. He is the oldest of two and his younger sister Nancy also played collegiate soccer at Elon. In what little free time he has, Hogan likes to golf. He married former Colorado assistant coach Alli Hunt in May of 2008.The Hogans welcomed their first son Declan Brady Hogan on February 11, 2010 and their second son Carrig James Hogan on February 28, 2012.

Chris Gnehm Assistant Coach Averett, 1997 Second season at Coastal Carolina Gnehm is entering his second year as Coastal Carolina s assistant coach. In Gnehm s first season, the Chanticleers recorded eight more victories than the previous year, went 5-0 in Big South Conference home games and set a school-record for fewest goals allowed with 20. Gnehm coached three All-Big South Conference selections in forward Kacey Kelley, midfielder Fia Jonsson and defender Cami Skladany. Gnehm comes to Coastal after spending the 2011 campaign as the top assistant at Pac-12 member Colorado. Prior to his time with the Buffaloes, Gnehm spent nine successful seasons as an assistant women s soccer coach at Florida Atlantic, a member of the Sun Belt Conference. He was the Owls top assistant the last three seasons and served as the goalkeeper coach from 2002-07. I am eager to get started with my duties here at Coastal Carolina, said Gnehm. I welcome the challenge of helping Paul build the program into a team that will contend for conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances. I am blessed to have the opportunity to work for such a close friend and someone I respect so much on and off the field. I feel like my last season with the University of Colorado and experiences in the Pac-12 will be an asset to me and the program. I will bring a tireless work rate and passion for the job and the game and will expect and demand the same of our players. I am excited to be working at a great University with an amazing location, being back at the beach is a good thing. Gnehm, who has a background in goalkeeping, played a key role in directing an excellent FAU defense. In 2006, the Owls led all NCAA Division I teams in shutout percentage (.762), holding opponents scoreless in 16 of 21 matches. A year later, FAU s second year in the Sun Belt, the team posted nine shutouts and allowed just 15 goals. His collegiate coaching career started at his alma mater, Averett (Va.) University, where he was an assistant coach from 1996-98. He then became the assistant coach for the men s soccer program at Monmouth (N.J.) University from 1998-99 before heading to Ferrum (Va.) College to be the head men s soccer coach as well as a Bret Mollon Assistant Coach/Goalkeepers Temple, 2012 First season at Coastal Carolina women s tennis coach from 1999-2001. In addition to his coaching credentials, he led the Soccer Plus Goalkeeping School (Wethersfield, Conn.) during the summer of 1995. He is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Gnehm earned a bachelor s degree in physical education in 1997 from Averett, where he was a four-year starter at goalkeeper and team captain from 1993-96. He still holds Averett s school record for most saves in a single season and career. Gnehm is originally from Bayville, N.J., graduating from Central Regional High School where he earned first team All-State soccer honors as a senior in 1992. During his free time, Gnehm participated in nearly 60 commercials as an actor/model from 1979-1988. He helped promote products such as Cracker Jacks, Nike, Colleco Vision, Cheetos, Life Cereal and Jell-O Pudding. He also appeared in print ads for Wrangler Kid, Gravy Train and FAO Schwartz. Gnehm recently became engaged to Tiffany Reeves and the couple are planning a January 2014 wedding. Mollon enters his first season on the Coastal Carolina soccer staffs. Mollon serves as the goalkeeping coach for both the Chanticleer men's and women's programs. Mollon joins the Chanticleer staffs after spending the previous three seasons playing professionally in the Premier Development League and National Premier Soccer League. Mollon's PDL career is highlighted by a PDL Championship, as an amateur, with the Michigan Bucks in 2006. Most recently, Mollon was in preseason camp with the PDL's Harrisburg City Islanders. Mollon received his introduction to coaching as a camp assistant at the Oakland University and Temple University soccer camps. He also spent time on the staff at the Vardar soccer camps. Mollon was a standout student-athlete at Temple from 2008-10. He was a two-time Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star and served as team captain as a senior. He set the Owls all-time single season shutout mark with nine clean sheets in 2009. He also left Temple as the program's leader with a 0.80 career goals against average. In addition, Mollon ranks second all-time in Temple history with 25 career wins to go along with his 21 career shutouts. Mollon started his intercollegiate career at Oakland University where was named to the Summit League All- Academic team as a freshman. CCU SOCCER FIELD The Coastal Carolina University women s soccer team has called the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field home since the 2002 season. The Chanticleers opened the field with a 2-1 win over Appalachian State Sept. 1, 2002, and have won over 58 percent of their games on the home turf. Coastal Carolina and the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field hosted the 2006 Big South Women s Soccer Championships and the men s squad has hosted first-round NCAA Tournament games in 2003 and 2012. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field features a full-size pitch with natural grass and bleacher seating on the East size of the complex. A press box and new scoreboard were installed in 2004 and improvements to the aesthetics of the field have been ongoing. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field surely holds a distinctive home field advantage for the Chants as the program is 58-31-10 all-time within its friendly confines. The Chants will play eight regular-season home games in 2013, beginning with the season-opener against Elon on Friday, August 23. It will mark the program s 100th game on its homefield. Coastal will also play host to the Big South Conference Tournament this year for the second time. RETIRED NUMBER # 26 - APRIL STIRTON In a ceremony prior to the 2011 women s soccer alumni game (April 9, 2011), the alumni and current team came together to pay the ultimate homage to a former player, dear friend and role model by officially retiring April Erin Stirton s number 26 from the women s soccer program. Stirton s number was retired almost a year to the day after the CCU women s soccer family suffered the devastating and tragic loss of Stirton. Stirton, from Waxhaw, N.C., proudly wore the number 26 for the Chanticleers. She entered Coastal Carolina as a junior transfer from Wingate College in the fall of 2002, playing two seasons as a Chanticleer under former head coach Karrie Miller. During that time, Stirton displayed her talent, skill and competitive drive to earn a starting position on the CCU field and simultaneously became an immediate member of the women s soccer family with her southern charm, compassion and unique personality. During her soccer career at Coastal Stirton started in 38 of the 39 games in which she appeared. Over the 2002-03 seasons, Stirton s contributions on the defensive end helped lead the Chants to a Big South Championship in 2003. While at Coastal, she was an actively involved student-athlete, was a two-year starter on the women s soccer team, was a member of the Coastal Carolina University National Competition Cheerleading Squad, an intramural basketball star and a dedicated student of the Wall College of Business.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each studentathlete. This has evolved into the Conference s mission of Developing Leaders Through Athletics. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women s basketball and women s golf. In 1989, George F. Buddy Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women s basketball, baseball, softball, men s and women s soccer, volleyball and women s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE 7233 Pineville-Matthews Road, Suite 100 Charlotte, NC 28226 704-341-7990 Fax: 704-341-7991 www.bigsouthsports.com efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men s and women s indoor track & field in 1997 and women s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the Sweet 16 in men s soccer, women s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men s soccer, men s basketball, women s basketball, baseball, men s outdoor track & field, and men s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men s golfer in the country, had the nation s top scoring men s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men s Golf Championships -- including the Conference s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifthyear of the Big South s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina s women s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All- Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams and two playoff wins -- for the first time, had a women s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a League-record four men s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men s and women s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women s basketball player to play in the WNBA two years ago. The Conference s tagline, Developing Leaders Through Athletics was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 Best of the Best moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University s 10-year women s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South s first 25 years. The Conference s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference s student-athletes were named to the Big South s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference s first three decades of existence.
