Message from Chair of Championships I am proud to present the results of the 2014 Australian Defence Alpine Snow sports Championships held at Perisher Blue resort in New South Wales, Australia. This is the 33 rd year of the Championships and the 18 th year since the inclusion of snowboard events. Over this time, our events have evolved significantly with the inclusion of skier cross in our Alpine program and slope style as a judged event in our snowboarding program. This year we have also seen a strong attendance from Disabled Wintersport Australia athletes and officials, which has been a welcome addition to our ADF inter services competition. From an international perspective, 2014 was a touring year for ADASA to return to the British Inter Services Snow Sports Championships in Meribel and a large contingent of ADF snow boarders and skiers trained in Austria and raced in France. Hence whilst we have not had a British Combined Services team at this year s event, we anticipate one or more international contingents joining us at Perisher in 2015. The improved performance of ADASA members who participated in Exercise Alpine Challenge 2014 has been a hallmark of this year s Championships. I would also like to extend an especially sincere thanks to our patrons, General Peter Gration, Vice Admiral Peter Jones and Air Vice Marshall Chris Spence. GEN Gration is stepping down this year after supporting Defence snowsports for more than three decades and we salute his generous and unwavering patronage. VADM Peter Jones has been exceptionally active in providing stewardship of this year s activities in Europe and Australia and we look forward to VADM Jones assuming our senior patron role in 2015. AVM Spence has again travelled to Austria, France and Perisher to support our personnel and I know all the athletes value his presence on the mountain at these events. This year it has been tremendous to have so many members of Disabled Wintersports Australia joining our program at Perisher and we especially welcome the DWA Ambassador, Jess Gallagher to speak at our Presentation Dinner. We continue to be inspired by their courage and enthusiasm displayed throughout these Championships. ADASA hopes to see this affiliation continue to grow stronger in future years. We have again partnered very closely with the Perisher management team for the 2014 events and this has paid dividends in terms of the planning and conduct of the Championships. The race department has provided first class race coaching and excellent courses for all our skiing and snowboarding events. The successful conduct of these championships is made possible by the sterling efforts of my championship subcommittee and the ADASA race committee and on behalf of the Association I extend our thanks for their contributions. It has been gratifying to be able to recognise Wing Commander Glen Campbell through Life Membership of ADASA at this years Dinner. Finally, I recognise the athletes from Navy, Army and Air Force who gained selection this year and valiantly represented their respective services. The competition in all events has been intense but always good spirited. I especially congratulate those whose achievements are being recognised in these results. Scoring of the ADASA Championships 2014 The ADIISC is scored in accordance with the ADASA Race Rules 2014 but a brief summary is included here for clarity. Alpine/Ski Events All ski events are scored using the FIS Alpine formula. Details of the formula can be found in FIS documents included in the references of the ADASA Race Rules. The formula itself is:!!! =!!!!!" 1! This formula captures the percentage back value of each competitor from the winner of the event, with competitors accumulating points proportional to their times behind first place. The F factor in the formula exists to provide an average equivalency between events of different disciplines thus allowing the results of each to be compared. These factors are annually computed and published by FIS based on the performance of competitors at the highest international levels. A more relevant factor for the purposes of the ADASA Championship can be calculated by using the same methodology but with the performance of athletes from the ADASA events. This is achieved by using the following formula: 60! =!!"#!"! 1 Using these two formulas the ADASA race points for each event can be calculated. The combined performance across all ski events is calculated by adding the points of each qualifying competitor from each discipline. In this system the lowest points indicate better performance. Snowboard Individual snowboard events are scored using the FIS points scales with maximum points values allocated to each event. In this system 100% of points are allocated to first place, with diminishing percentages for each place back. Thus, highest points indicate better performance. For the Parallel Giant Slalom and Snowboard Cross events both the timed qualifying runs and resulting knockout rankings are scored using the 50 point FIS scale. For Slopestyle a single 100 point FIS scale is used. In this manner each event accrues a maximum of 100 points for first place overall. - 5 -

Individual Champion Individual champions are scored based on the accumulation of points from either ski or snowboard points systems depending on the champion being established. For individual skier champions lower points are better whilst for snowboard higher points indicate better performance. Squad and Contingent Championship For overall squad and contingent champions these two points scales need to be aligned. To achieve this the snowboard points are directly inverted by subtracting each competitor s points within each event from the 100 points available for that event. The result of this alignment is that all points tallied for squad and contingent level awards are scored such that lowest points overall is better. Further Information For further information of scoring in the 2014 championship please consult the ADASA Race Rules 2014. - 6 -
