ECONOMIC INFORMATION & ANALYTICS Virginia Employment Commission 2017 Virginia Accommodation & Food Services Accommodation and Food Services: Accommodation and Food services ranks fourth for average private employment annually, with an annual average of 342,001 in 2016. However, industry wages remain well below the other top industries, despite its modest continued growth. Total wages account for only 4 percent of Virginia s private sector wages with just over $6 billion, and at $357 per week the average weekly wages remain the lowest of all industries. Unsurprisingly, this industry is driven almost exclusively by Restaurants and Other Eating Places. This sub-sector is responsible for 83 percent of the industry s establishments, 81 percent of employment, and 73 percent of total wages. However, the average weekly wage of $324 is the second lowest, with the highest average wage being Special Food Service s $508. Luckily, only one sub-sector saw a notable loss from last year.
