THE NEW JET 9 What makes the next-generation Jet 9 so much stronger and stiffer? The evolution of the Jet 9 began with FEA (computer modeling) and real-world testing completed during the development of NIner s W.F.O. 9 and R.I.P. 9 models. The new Jet 9 both applies this experience and pushes the limits of weight and strength successfully maintaining the DNA of our full suspension XC machine. This is how we did it >
The tapered headtube is a major improvement on the Jet 9: Allows the use of the newest generation of 1.5 tapered steerer suspension forks, creating the stiffest front-end possible allowing for amazing steering precision as you carve a corner. The new integrated headset gives us more room between the toptube and downtube, giving you the same stack height as in the previous version of the Jet 9. When combined with the larger diameter toptube and downtube, it produces a 14% increase* in torsional stiffness. *Torsional stiffness figure from our new testing machine (whom we lovingly refer to as Betty ).
Because of the larger welding area created by the new tapered headtube, we are able to include a new, massive, hydroformed downtube as well as a significantly larger diameter toptube. My, what pretty welds you have! The welds you see on the left hand frame are single pass flat welds. When welding tube to tube (ie: the front triangle), this single pass flat weld disperses loads more effectively than does a standard tig weld. This effect is most prominent on tube to tube welds and thus is only used on the front triangle. Flat welds allowed us to use thinner wall sections on larger tube areas and still give us an increase in strength and stiffness. Hydroforming allows us to shape the tubes and optimize strength and stiffness in key areas, giving us the ability to create beautifully tuned frames with the precise ride characteristics we seek for every application. In testing, this new downtube puts up stiffness numbers much higher than that of the original, with little weight penalty.* You will find hydroforming in the toptube, downtube, chainstays and the rear triangle Y-brace. * See last page for weight details. 4 For our revised design, we created new forgings for the chainstay and seatstay yokes and increased the length of the new box-section chainstays. This change makes the rear triangle 28% stiffer than the previous design. The power transfer of the original Jet was good - the new Jet is going to blow your mind.
In another application of the KISS theory* of engineering, the Jet 9 seatstay yoke has been redesigned and the parts count reduced from 3 pieces to 1 piece the new forged I-beam seat stay yoke which replaces the old round-tube structure. Additionally, we switched to stiffer box-section tubing for the seatstays. This new, stiffer rear triangle structure both aids in crisper suspension actuation (due to the reduction of rear triangle flex) and yields significantly better power transfer, cornering and traction. What more could you ask for? *Keep It Simple, Stupid! :-)

The new Jet 9 is just 20 grams heavier than the original, with headsets installed.* For your reference, 20 grams is equal to the weight of 76 US cents. We feel that the gains in stiffness, power transfer and efficiency will more than make up for the increase. * for our comparison we used 2 black anodized Jet frames, both in size medium. We installed a stock integrated headset in the new Jet 9 and a Chris King headset in the old Jet 9.
