INTERVIEW WITH DUNCAN MILLOY What is your educational background? I have a college diploma from Algonquin College. I have also attained numerous certifications in the Health and Fitness industry also, including nutrition and personal training. What do you like most about the natural bodybuilding industry? I like the fact that it is a growing sport and most individuals competing are there through their hard work and dedication to bodybuilding. I have made many friends/acquaintances through Natural Bodybuilding that enjoy the same passion. Do you coach athletes? Yes. But, I am very selective to the ones I do. I have a full time job and don t have time for people that aren t committed to preparation. I coach individuals because I truly want to help them. I even have an audition process I make potential athletes go through now. I am not after money Just helping people achieve their personal successes.
Do you have any diet or training philosophies that you would consider unique or not utilized by other coaches? I would say so I am a big believer in volume training. I also have a routine that my athletes must accomplish every 6 weeks called rapid fire. And for the diet, just no sweet potato s will be added in. Gross! What are your top 2 pieces of advice you would you give to people looking to achieve an aesthetically pleasing physique? I would say training each muscle group with the same intensity as the next. Your calves are just important as your biceps. Learn your body too Some people are more genetically gifted in certain areas of the body. Make sure you are balancing out weaknesses and focusing on the lagging parts. If you had to select 3 nutritional supplements you think are most important, what would you pick and why? Protein Because sometimes it is faster than cooking a chicken breast BCAA s Great way to keep lean muscle when dieting. Or gain when not. Creatine I have found it helps with my strength when competing.
There is a lot of debate on the amount of protein people should consume on a daily basis. What are your recommendations? I have always found the 1.5 2.0 grams per pound has always been a good staple for me. Do you think intermittent fasting is a good protocol to follow for people to lose weight? Nope. That s all I have to say about that. ;) What type of nutrition recommendations do you have for people looking to add muscle? Adding muscle is tricky for a natural competitor. If you go too far to put on weight It just ends up as fat. Where if you go not enough You won t see any progress. My general rule for me is not going 20lbs over in the off season. This way I can lift as heavy as I want and not worry about having to shred 40lbs and lose muscle during preparations. When you were competing, what made you decide to compete in the one federation versus another? Hmm That is a tough question. The bulk of my competing would be with OPA/CBBF/IFBB as there was a progression with the organization. ie: Regional s, Provincial s, National s and World s. Which always gives you something to strive for. But, I did compete in all of the 3 major natural federations in Canada. What has been your biggest accomplishment of your bodybuilding career? 2009 OPA Ontario Classic Overall Title. It was my first overall title in the sport So, it holds a special place in memory and thoughts. What other accomplishments are you proud of? My son and daughter. My wife and I are always so very proud of them. I also take pride in the fact that I have never taken a banned substance. So, I have NEVER taken any steroid in my LIFE. Are there any federations in your opinion that do enough drug testing? As in a satisfactory % of the athletes being tested? No But, I would be a hypocrite in saying they are all bad as I have been tested in each federation except the IDFA. For me, the issue relates to the before the competition. Far too often I have seen people lose their placing on the day of a show, knowing the 1 st or 2 nd place individual would test positive. Polygraph testing before the competition It would deter A LOT more athletes from competing if they aren t clean. It can be outsourced and would only be a minimal cost for the competitor.
Natural bodybuilding has increased dramatically in terms of popularity; however, do you think natural bodybuilders will ever be as popular as bodybuilders who use steroids? No. The truth is that people still want to see the mass monsters. Human nature Do you think bodybuilders that use steroids are more popular than those who don t? 110%. As mentioned above. But, I will say it is going somewhat in the right direction. Back when I started competing People would say natural who? If you could change one thing in the health and fitness industry, what would it be? The MIND SET of people competing in Natural competitions Being natural isn t a 6 month commitment when getting ready for a show. It is a lifelong commitment. Period. Who is your role model in the health and fitness industry and why? Brent Felstead: He was a great natural bodybuilder for years and represented Canada on the World stage He also had MS throughout. A great role model and great person who I am proud to know. A true inspiration to look up at and admire. (I also bet 99% of people reading this will have no clue who he is. If you don t Google him!) What are 2 things you would like the bodybuilding community to know about Duncan Milloy? Hard work and dedication were my keys to success. It was always just me In and out of competition.
Any additional comments you would like to add to this interview? I have enjoyed many successes in bodybuilding and have tried to do the best that I can be when it comes to competition day. But, sometimes things don t work out as you envisioned. Don t give up! Every one of my overall wins came off the heels of a failure in my eyes. Train harder! Also, family comes first Don t bet the farm on a trophy. I almost lost my perspective on this. Trophy s will come and go. But, family will be there for life.
