Australian Rules Football is commonly called Aussie rules or simply footy. It is a sport played between two teams of 22 players (18 on the field, and 4 interchanges) with an oval-shaped ball on a large oval-shaped field. Australian football is a major participation sport and spectator sport in Australia. 3. During the game, players may position themselves anywhere on the field. They can use any part of their body to move the ball. The most common methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. 4. The length of a game is 80 minutes divided into four 20 minute quarters. However, like basketball, the time is stopped each time the ball is out of play. This means quarters usually go for around 25-30 minutes. 5. At the beginning of each quarter time the umpire bounces the ball in the centre of the field. This is called a centre bounce. Only four players from each team are allowed inside the centre circle for the bounce. This also happens each time after a 6 point goal is scored. 2. The objective of the game is to get points by passing the ball through the opponent's goal. The main way to get these points is by kicking the ball between the four different posts. If you kick the ball through the tallest two goal posts, you get 6 points. If they ball passes through the goal posts, but comes off a different part of the body (e.g. the hands) or an opponent, you only get 1 point. You also get 1 point if the ball passes between the goal posts and the point posts (see picture below). 6. Sometimes, when there is a dispute between two or more players, the umpire will stop the game and bounce the ball between two opponents. This is called a ball-up. 7. If they ball goes outside the white line around the edge of the field, the umpire stands facing away from the players (looking towards the stadium) and throws the ball high over his head back into the field. This is called a throw-in.
