I am a primary school teacher in Grange and returned to Sligo in July 2007 having spent seven years in Wexford. I was previously a member of Killarney Golf and Fishing club. Team golf has always been a passion of mine and the Winter League is a wonderful competition. A prominent member once told me "the Winter League it is the only game in town" and he has a point. Having played team sports for many years I love match play golf and foursomes is my preferred format. In 2013 I was part of John Gilmartin's team which won the Connaught Shield for the fourth time in the history of our club. My highlight in 2014 was winning the Club Mixed Foursomes with Michelle McGarraghy. The role of competitions chairman is a demanding one but one I am looking forward to. Tony hails from Killarney, but with typical Kerry modesty didn t mention that fact!! In the coming weeks I will publish additional profiles of the committee and also will be publishing regular updates from their portfolio s. Red-Letter-Day Cometh Hugh Arnold and his team have completed the Annual Handicap Review(AHR) and all members whose handicap has been adjusted as a result will receive notice in the post shortly. So congratulations to all of you receiving the letter an early Christmas present!! There are major changes coming to the Golfnet system in the New Year and the GUI will be holding a series of roadshows across Ireland in January & February to brief clubs of the changes. Hugh attended a GUI Workshop in November where the key focus was around the mandated methodology to be used for Annual Handicap Review. Hugh reported that this methodology has been followed in County Sligo for some time but indications were that this rigour is lacking in some clubs. More information from this Workshop will be published in the coming weeks.
Local Rules Two Local rules are now in effect as of 8th December 2014 by Order of Competitions Committee. The first is the customary Winter rule and the second relates to the Course Revitalisation Programme. 1. Winter Rules A ball that come to rest on a closely mown area through the green must be lifted and placed more than one club length into the first cut of rough nearest to where the ball originally lay not nearer the hole. The ball may be cleaned when lifted under this Local Rule. In addition to the above Rule a player wishing to use a Putter from off the green may do so subject to the following conditions. A ball lying on a closely mown area through the green and within 10 yards of the green may be lifted, without penalty, and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, the player must place it on a spot within six inches, of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. All Bunkers under construction and those under renovation have been defined by the Committee as ground under repair, and therefore lose their status as hazards and are automatically classified as through the green. Therefore, unless the Committee specifically states otherwise, Rule 25-1b(i) applies, not Rule 25-1b(ii) and in addition Relief must be taken. 2. Course Revitalisation Programme All Bunkers under construction and those under renovation have been defined by the Committee as ground under repair, and therefore lose their status as hazards and are automatically classified as through the green. Therefore, unless the Committee specifically states otherwise, Rule 25-1b(i) applies, not Rule 25-1b(ii) and in addition Relief must be taken. Except when the ball is in a water hazard or a lateral water hazard, a player may take relief from interference by an abnormal ground condition as follows: Through the Green: If the ball lies through the green, the player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief must not be in a hazard or on a putting green. When the ball is dropped within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, the ball must first strike a part of the course at a spot that avoids interference by the condition and is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. In addition, during the Course Revitalisation Programme if a ball lies in or touches other areas of ground under repair (i.e. Green Extensions, New Tee Boxes and areas of Fairway/Rough reshaping) relief must be taken under rule 25-1b (i) New Years Eve It s been several years since the Club has held a New Year s Eve. This year that changes as there will be a chance to see in the New Year in style in the Club. The night will be open to members and their guests. Admission will be by ticket only and they will be on sale from the Office at 30..
