VENNITTI, Anthony- 73kg, 5 th RADAD, Mohamed 100kg, 3 rd Results of the National President s Cup DELGADO, Angelica, 57 1st HATTON, Jack, -81kg, 2nd Results of the World Masters This year s World Master's Judo Championship in Ft Lauderdale saw a large participation from the NYAC. From the left: Huksul Lee, Mark Yehia, Takuya Shimomura, Sandor Karolyi, Arthur Canario Teimoc Johnston Ono, Ed Musikantow, George Van Amson, and Arthur Scotto on day one. Takuya Shimomura, Sandor Karolyi, and Huksul Lee on day two, and Mahmoud (Mark) Yehia on day three. While our numbers were good the results were disappointing. On day one, Teimoc, on the verge of chocking out his first opponent, somehow lost control and was himself pinned for Ippon (full point). Eddie, who deserves all the credit in the world for fighting with a hip replacement, was thrown with Uchi Mata (Inner Thigh Throw) in his first match and arm locked in his second. Arthur Scotto fought Santa Claus his first match - a Giant Brazilian with a huge full beard and long white hair. Arthur was down a shido (penalty), but with 5 seconds left did a sacrifice throw and scored yuko (quarter point) for the win. His next match saw a tough Italian who caught him for yuko with a Sasae (Lifting Pulling Ankle Block) for the match. I was awful did nothing I planned made all kinds of mistakes and lost my two matches. The only bright spot was George. After a month s illness that prevented him from training and not competing in many years, he won a match in Golden Score (overtime) with a quick Osoto Gari (Large Outer Reaping) and, while he lost his next two matches to very experienced competitors, it was close all the way and he fought with spirit.
Day two was better but still no medals. Haksul and Sandor won their first matches but lost after that. Taku, in his first ever judo competition, had his Uchi Mata working beautifully but after winning lost to much larger competitors. On day three we had only Mahmoud. At 250 pounds he was tiny but played large. He won his first, lost his second to a giant from Moldavia who only won on a counter. In his third match he was down by wasari (half point) with 10 seconds to go when he threw with Hari (Sweeping Hip Throw) for Ippon. Best N.Y.A.C. throw of the tournament. Unfortunately, he lost the next match to a tough Slovakian. All in all, in spite of the lack of medals, it was fun being with friends and we a great time. Next year Sardinia! Arthur Canario On Ocober 22, 2016, Albert Walla, John Walla s father, passed away. The Club sent beautiful flowers to the funeral home. Mr. Walla was a fixture at the NY Open tournament for many years, assisting at the scorer s table. He was a wonderful father and husband, and his family misses him very much. At the New York Open Judo Championship scorer s table around 2002. From the right Al Walla, John Walla, Arthur Canario, Tommy Cress.
John s mother, Lillian Walla sent this note of thanks to the club:
