CELEBRATING 21 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2013 Message from the President At last Spring has sprung and the golf season is on! We are so blessed to live in a part of this country that has not had extreme weather conditions, so get out on the links and play away! Our Board met Sunday and these were our decisions and recommendations: 1. We are focusing our efforts on increasing our membership and need your help. When you bring a potential member to an outing, please get their name and phone number to me. I will then call them as a follow up to answer questions and help them to join our club. 2. When new members come to our open outings at Maple Leaf, please invite them to be a part of your foursome. I know many members like to play with their old friends but this has led newer members to feel we are clique-ish and some have dropped out. So let s show them we care and want to absorb them into our group. 3. It is important to let the home course, Maple Leaf, know as soon as possible if you are playing on Saturday. You can call as early as Tuesday and should let them know no later than Thursday. 4. When playing Maple Leaf, if we end up with an odd number of groups like 4,4,3. The threesome will be put off first to keep the last group from having to wait on each hole. Please check with the starter before heading out as he will let you know if there s a threesome that needs to go off first. Thanks for your efforts to expand our membership. We all know other golfers, so please make it a point this month to personally invite them to try us out. We gained 8 new members last year and many of them came because someone just said, How about playing a round with us? ~Jeanne Peters, President Message from Kathy Giba, Social Chair: We will be having a MEMBER APPRE- CIATION cookout following golf at Maple Leaf on June 8th in the Pavilion. Hamburgers and Hot Dogs will be provided by the Triad ASGA. We are asking that each member provide a side dish and bring their own beverage. Please contact me at 931-0056 to RSVP by June 1st and let me know what dish you are planning to bring so that we do not have any duplications. Country Hills Outing The Country Hills outing, April 13th had 15 golfers and 14 attended the meal after at Koronda's. 1st place low net women was Jeanne Peters. 2nd place was Rita Davis. 1st place low net men was Landon Wood. 2nd place was Earnie Miller. Closest to the pin for men was Tom Loughlin. No women hit the green on the selected hole so two drawings were held for that prize money. Steve Motsinger and Frank Dorn won those drawings. The weather was mild with a bit of wind on the front nine. The back nine was warmer with less wind. Every one present had a good time, good food and good spirits at Koronda's. ~Submitted by host Frank Dorn: Motsinger's Pro Finish April 20th, I witnessed what could be called a professional finish to a round of golf at Maple Leaf Golf Club. Steve Motsinger had an unremarkable first nine holes of golf with some missed opportunities and was seven over par after nine holes. The back nine was a different story! On the 17th hole, Steve had his second birdie of the day. He made a 20 foot putt for a birdie three. On the 18th hole, his tee shot left him about 135 yards from the Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Sacramento's Wine Country Classic - May 17-18, 2013. Steve hit a high towering approach shot that landed about a foot to the right of the cup. The next hop was right in the hole for an eagle two! That birdie/eagle finish gave Steve a 38 on the back nine and a total score of 80 for the day! Steve said that was his first eagle in his golfing career. It was a beauty to watch! Let's hope there are many more eagles before Steve retires from the game. ~Tom Loughlin Olde Mill Announcement This year we will be returning to Olde Mill I want to invite each of you to Olde Mill Golf Resort for the 4th of July Weekend! Our group has played this course for several years and everyone seems to agree this is the place to be for the Fourth! Our package will include 2 nights lodging, 3 rounds of unlimited golf, breakfast, range balls, club storage and tentatively the traditional fireworks show. We would arrive on Friday, July 5 and depart Sunday, July 7. Tee times are 1:06 for Friday and 10:06 for Saturday and Sunday. We will be staying in the same location as before. Currently houses 108, 111, and 112 are reserved for us. These 3 houses each have 4 bedrooms with 2 beds per bedroom, a full kitchen and Our newest and best dressed golfers Judy Page and Ernie Miller 4/13/13 Country Hill outing shared living area. They are being reserved for us until the deadline date of May 31. The cost is $300.00 and this includes tax. The deadline to make your reservation and $100.00 deposit is May 31. You will need to contact Sherry Slaughter or Ted Westmoreland at 1-800-753-5005 to make you reservation and deposit. In addition, please inform me if you are going. One slight concern: Aeration of the greens will take place on June 24, 12 days before we arrive. Ted said that they use the small punch and will be rolling and watering the greens. I have spoken with Tom Frank at Maple Leaf, Harold Kinkaid at Reynolds Park and Mike at Meadowlands concerning aeration. All 3 believe the effects of aeration should be minimal for us. This is based on the date of aeration, our date of play, size of the small punch, rolling the greens and watering. I know this is always a concern when we play and this is why I called and got a few informed or knowledgeable opinions. Also, the price was slightly reduced from what we paid last year. Please consider this outing for your holiday weekend. Again, our group has for several years made our way to Olde Mill located on the the Blue Ridge and always had a wonderful experience. Come join us for the Fourth! See you on the course! ~Steve Motsinger, Chairman of the Board About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: Jennifer Gwynn - 05/03 John Simms - 05/09 Patricia Stidham - 05/10 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) David Jacobson - 05/31/2013 These members recently renewed: Linda DeCecco Kathy Giba Louis Marusik Jeanne Peters These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) Robert Jackson - 03/31/2013 Karen Vaughn - 03/31/2013 Our chapter currently has 27 members.
