1. Safety Information Before using your new spinergy wheels, please take some time to familiarize yourself with the information in this manual. Cycling can be a dangerous and potentially life threatening activity. Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. See the owner s manual that came with your bicycle for additional safety information. U.S. Consumer Product Safety regulations for COMPLETE bicycle sales require side reflectors mounted on the spokes of each wheel. Wheels packaged for sale as part of a complete bicycle have a reflector pack included. For WHEEL ONLY sales, reflectors are not included and must be purchased separately. If you ever ride at dusk or at night, see your Spinergy dealer to purchase chase reflectors for your wheels. Riding at dusk or at night is dangerous! If you choose to ride at dusk or at night, do not rely solely on the CPSC required reflectors that came with your bicycle. Use a front and rear lighting system. Supplement your lighting system with at least one strobe light, and wear light-colored reflective clothing. Your local bicycle dealer can provide you with help and advice in purchasing and installing additional reflectors and visibility gear. Note that the unique configuration of your Spinergy wheel has additional space where you can easily add additional reflective decals. If you commute by bicycle, or ride at night, you should add additional reflective material to your wheels. Check your state s laws. Lights are required for riding at dusk, night, or dawn. ALWAYS check your quick releases before EACH ride and after every fall to ensure that they are properly engaged. Before EACH ride and after every fall, inspect your wheels for any visual signs of damage, fatigue, or wear. If any signs of damage are present, DO NOT RIDE your wheels! Contact your local Spinergy authorized dealer or reputable bike dealer for further inspection. Re-torque wheel endcaps after first ride. 2

2. Quick Release Procedure These are general guidelines on how to properly install your Spinergy quick release. For correct installation and safe operation follow these instructions carefully. Note: Please refer to your bike frame manufacturer s recommended location for proper placement of the quick release lever. The proper location of the quick release lever can vary based upon: riding style, frame type, and accessories added to the wheel like a disc brake. The rider needs to follow the guidelines of the bike frame manufactuer for proper location of the lever when the quick release is in the closed position. Figure 1. Hub and quick-release parts: 1. Skewer 2. Adjustment-nut 3. Springs (small ends to inside as shown) 4. Lever 3

I. Installation of the quick release skewer To prevent accidental wheel loss, Spinergy recommends that secondary retention tabs (Lawyer tabs) be included on the front fork dropouts. Follow these steps carefully for the proper installation of the quick release skewer. Please refer to figure 1 for part details. 1. Unthread the adjustment nut (Figure 1, #2) from the skewer and remove the tension spring (Figure 1, #3). 2. Insert the quick release skewer through the hub axle from the nondrive side on the rear and the non-disc side on the front. 3. After sliding the skewer through the hub, reinstall the tension spring (Figure 1, #2) with the small side facing inward (see Figure 1). 4. Reinstall the adjustment nut back onto the skewer. II. Adjustment and operation of the quick release skewer 1. Move the lever of the quick-release to the OPEN position (Figure 2, #3) and set the wheel so it fully touches the inner surfaces of the fork ends. 2. With the lever in the adjustment position (Figure 2, #2), hand tighten the adjustment-nut (Figure 1, #2) until it is slightly tight. 3. Adjust the quick release so moderate force is required to close the lever fully. Lock the quick-release; with the lever in the palm of your hand, move the lever to the CLOSE position (Figure 2, #1). Figure 2. Lever positions: 1. Locked (CLOSE) 2. Adjustment position 3. Released (OPEN) 4

Figure 3. Do not turn the lever in a circle. Do not turn the lever in a circle to increase the quick-release tension (Figure 3); this will not correctly hold the wheel in its location. 4. Align the levers so they do not touch a part of the bicycle or an accessory part (such as rack or fenders), and so obstacles in the path of the bicycle can not catch the levers (Figure 4 and 5). Figures 4 and 5 illustrate an example of the proper position for a general road bike configuration. Figure 4. Front lever position Figure 5. Rear lever position Note: Please refer to your bike frame manufacturer s recommended location for proper placement of the quick release lever. The proper location of the quick release lever can vary based upon: riding style, frame type, and accessories added to the wheel like a disc brake. 5

III. Inspection of proper installation: Quick release skewer Before each ride, test the attachment of your wheels. If a quick-release does not pass a step, either do the adjustment procedures (and steps) again or have your local dealer repair your bicycle. Step 1. Lift the bicycle and sharply hit the top of the tire (Figure 6). The wheel must not come off. If the wheel is loose or can move from side to side repeat Section II (Adjustment and operation of the quick release skewer). Step 2. Make sure the quick-release lever can not be turned in a circle (Figure 7). Figure 6. Lift the front tire off the ground and hit the top with your hand to test for looseness. Figure 7. Make sure the lever does not turn. A quick-release that is not correctly closed can cause the wheel to be loose or come off when not expected, which can cause you to lose control and fall. Close the quick-release correctly before you ride the bicycle. 6

3. Registering your Spinergy Wheel Congratulations on your purchase of the most innovative, and technologically advanced bicycle wheelset in the industry. To protect your investment it is important to register your wheels with Spinergy. Simply go to our website www.spinergy.com/registration and fill out the required information. You will need a copy of your receipt of purchase and the wheel serial number located on the inside rim channel. This process only takes a few minutes and ensures that the warranty period is properly documented. 4. Spinergy Recommended Maintenance Important Spinergy recommends having your wheels trued and maintained by an authorized Spinergy dealer or reputable bicycle dealer. Due to the nature of PBO spokes, they may feel under tensioned when compared to a rigid steel spoke. If you tension PBO spokes to the point where they may feel like steel spokes, you will have over-tightened the spoke and risk damaging the rim. Increasing spoke tension beyond factory values will not improve performance or durability of the wheel. Spinergy s Limited Warranty does NOT cover improper maintenance. Spinergy PBO wheels utilize nipples, which are recessed inside the rim. To access the nipples, remove the tire, tube, and rim strip. Use the spline wrench (Figure 8, #1) to hold the spoke stationary, and the ¼ nut driver (Figure 8, #2) to turn the nipple inside the rim. Failure to hold the spoke stationary while turning the nipple will cause twisting of the spoke. The twisting of the individual spoke may render your wheels round and true while static, but this will allow the wheel to lose true as soon as load is applied, and may PERMANENTLY DAMAGE your wheels. For proper spoke tension, please refer to the tension chart on page 8. 7

Spinergy Recommended Maintenance Tension Warning We recommend that you use a Park Tm-1 tension gauge to adjust spoke tension within the boundaries of the values listed below: TIP: Always use blue 248 loctite thread locker on spoke threads when replacing a spoke. Spinergy Road Wheels MTB Wheels Round Front Radial Round Drive Side Round Non- Drive Radial Bladed Front Radial Bladed Drive Side 20-23 22-24 11-14 14-16 14-16 7-10 N/A 22-24 12-15 N/A N/A N/A Bladed Non- Drive Radial Bearings Cartridge style bearings are press fit, and should ONLY be replaced by an authorized Spinergy dealer, or reputable bicycle shop. Important Submerging bearings or spraying them with high-pressure water will cause bearings to wear prematurely, resulting in costly repairs. Remember Like any part on your bicycle, your Spinergy wheels require, periodic inspection for signs of fatigue, wear, or damage to the product, and routine maintenance. If you are not capable of performing these inspections or maintenance, please visit your Authorized Spinergy Dealer or a reputable bicycle shop in your area. 8
