Students participated in fishing, pond and river ecology, fen ecology, ziplining, rockwall climbing, and archery. They all got very wet during water activities, and a few actually fell into the water! Unlike past years, students did not get to stay overnight. At least they all had a blast with all of their activities. Hopefully many future 5th grade students have as much fun as this years students!
A to Z Mystery Books by: Hannah Doran and Grace Kubek The Cafeteria written by, Jadyn Redlick Is the cafeteria food ok? The other day me and my friend Trinity Wolfangel were excited for lunch, as of usual, not until she found what was in her hotdog. She thought it looked weird so she asked a nearby staff member for help. When Trinity asked her what was wrong, she said, It s okay, it just has MIXED MEATS in it! Trinity and i were both so grossed out that we only could eat half of our lunch. WOLF DEN We all think wolf den tables are great, but is there enough room? A couple of weeks ago, Trinity and I were happy and excited it was lunchtime but we were looking around for a table when we couldn t find any! We were super happy we got to sit at wolf den, but the tables were taken and we ended up having to sit with a group of boys. If you like fun filled mystery, then the book series A to Z Mysteries, by Ron Roy, is for you. This series has many fun books from A to Z. These books are, in my opinion, one of the best series around, and I think that after reading this article you will too! The thing that I like most about reading these books is the excitement you feel. It is like you are part of the book. The author does such a great job writing the books that you can not put them down! I think that mystery is the best kind of book, because you never know what will happen next. The A to Z Mystery books are one of Ron Roy s best selling series. He also writes other books like Capital Mysteries, another fun series. The A to Z mysteries has three main characters; Josh, Dink, and Ruth Rose. They are only kids, but they solve many puzzling mysteries.these books are great for both boys and girls, because the books are not about something that just girls or boys will like. In one of the books, there is a boy that had a winning lottery card stolen, and the three kids have to work together to track down the thief. It is winter and they have to find clues in the snow! Even though these books are not super long (100 pg max), there is something new that happens every time. Another reason I like this book is if you are eager to find out who did it you can try to solve the mystery by yourself. This is the series to find your love of reading books! Whether you are a boy or girl you will love this series.the next time you go to the library you should try these books. That s it for todays article, this has been Jadyn Redlick getting all up in your news!
World News: Festivity in China By Annie Qin Daring Swimmer By Catherine Zortman The daring and the courageous 64 year old Diana Nyad swam from Cuba to Key West, Florida without any protective cage from sharks. This persistent woman swam for 53 hours straight and 110 miles without any breaks. She attempted this challenge 5 times and succeeded on the fifth try. Jellyfish was a problem that stood in her way on her previous tries. To prevent the stings she swam with a protected silicone mask and suit. Nyad taught us a valuable lesson on never giving up and improving every single time. There are parties and food in China! This year, on September 19, is China s Mid-Autumn Festival! On China s Lunar Calendar, however, this holiday is falling on the 15th day of the 8th month. China has this festival because of their thanks to the moon. They believe that the moon is the reason for the changing season, and their good harvests. Therefore, they celebrate and thank the moon. The food served during this holiday is the mooncake, made with a filling of choice. The most common filling is the bean paste filling,(but any kind of filling is possible) rounded into a little sphere and then rolled into a soft outer layer. The soft outer layer is made out of much flour, and eggs. It presses the little sphere of filling to fit the shape of the mold it is made in. There is a chinese word or design printed onto the top of the mooncake. It is then sent to families and friends all around. The Mid-Autumn Festival is somewhat like the American Thanksgiving. The mooncake is round, and in China, the round circle means united. That is why, on this day, families get together. There are many legends about the Mid-Autumn Festival. One legend is the Chang E legend. Long, long ago, there were 10 suns. It was terribly hot. A man named Hou Yi, who owned great strength, shot down 9 of the suns. (That is why there is only 1 sun today). People from all over China came to meet this amazing man with amazing powers. One of these people was named Peng Meng. Shortly after his victory, Hou Yi married a woman named Chang E. One day, Hou Yi came upon Wangmu (the queen of heaven). Wangmu gave Hou Yi a elixir of which the drinker would immediately go to heaven and become a god/goddess. Hou Yi gave the elixir to Chang E for protection. Peng Meng saw this, and immediately demanded Chang E to hand over the elixir. Chang E knew that she could not win, so she drank the elixir. Because of her love to her husband, Chang E only went to the moon. Grieved, Hou Yi shouted Chang E s name to the sky. Chang E appeared in the moon. From then on, people sacrificed things for Chang E. Another legend entirely focused on the food takes place long ago. The people were tired of the government's cruel rules. A brave man named Zhu Yuanzhang organized an uprising. He sent notes to the people of China. Unfortunately, the government intercepted the notes. Zhu Yuanzhang tried again, this time hiding the notes in mooncakes. The people got the notes, and the uprising was successful. And, there are mooncakes today! Mooncake

The Costa Concordia By Jessica Fairman In the month of January 2012 the ship Costa Concordia sank off of the cost of the Italian island of Giglio. The ship hit a rock which caused the boat to tip letting in water that caused the ship to turn on it s side taking down millions of people. They checked the ship for leaks, but found none. They did find lots of spoiled food and lots of chemicals on the ship such as paint and lubricants. Many people struggled to get out as the ship sank. These people will be forever remembered.
