WELCOME at the Kennemer Golf & Country Club! The Kennemer Golf & Country Club was founded in 1910. During the first 18 years of its existence, the club played at a small 9-hole golf course near the village of Santpoort, using an 18th-century mansion as the clubhouse. The present course in Zandvoort was designed in 1927 by well known golf architect Harry Colt, who is responsible for many highly rated golf courses all over the world. British courses like the Eden Course at St. Andrews, Moor Park, Wentworth, Swinley Forest and Royal Portrush, but also Saint-Cloud in France and Pine Valley in the USA are always high on the list of topcourses in the world. Probably one of Colt s best known designs is the course at Muirfield, where The Open pays their regular visits. This course was redesigned by Colt in 1923. The course of the Kennemer has always had a very high international reputation, already from the opening days in 1928. There is hardly any golf atlas in which it is not highly recommended. Its reputation is not only based on the immaculate design but also on the very high standard of maintenance of the present 27-hole course. Over the years, several improvements have been made to the original layout, as well as an extension from 18 to 27 holes, based on some early recommendations by Harry Colt in 1938 and later by golf architect Frank Pennink. These last 9-holes (named the Van Hengel Course) were officially opened in 1985, the year of the club s 75th anniversary. The Kennemer Golf & Country Club has hosted many national and international amateur and professional tournaments, and the International Dutch Open has visited the Kennemer on numerous occasions. It is the oldest of the 18-hole seaside courses in Holland, and with its strong prevailing south-westerly wind, a real test for every golfer. In 2010, the Kennemer celebrated the Centennial with many entertaining and challenging golf events. We trust that this course guide will prove to be a helpful companion, and we wish you a pleasant and successful game on our course. The General Commit Hans A. Bosch President

THE COURSE In 1926, the renowned golf architect Harry Colt was called in to develop a new 18-hole golf course near the seaside town of Zandvoort. It was Colt s first project in The Netherlands. The dunes and undulations, as well as the size of land available, were considered by Colt to be extremely suitable for creating a championship course. According to international golf journalists and writers, the course he created remains one of his best. At the opening in 1928, the course consisted of two 9-hole loops, the presently named Pennink (B) Course and Colt (C) Course. The holes were played in a different order than they are played currently. Plans for building a third 9-hole loop date back to 1936, but it was not until 1985 that the Van Hengel (A) Course was opened. Originally, the landscape of the course had a bare, open and treeless character. Over the years, however, the dunes have become more grassy and many types of trees have developed. As a result, the course threatened to lose its open nature and thereby the typical character of a Colt course. For this reason, the club developed a master plan with the purpose of restoring the former character of the course. The many Dutch Open Championships played at the Kennemer have contributed to the international prestige of the course. It was here in 1976 that Seve Ballesteros won his first professional tournament.

FLORA AND FAUNA AT THE KENNEMER The Kennemer is situated in a rare regional landscape referred to as zeedorpenlandschap. Formerly, small fields between the dunes were used for agricultural purposes. The socalled aardappelveldjes (potato fields) refer to the times (since around 1800) that hotel owners of Zandvoort hired people to grow potatoes for their own use and for trade. Poor inhabitants also made a living of this agricultural activity, which ended in the early part of the 20th century. Nowadays the landscape is colonized by a wide variety of plants and animals. The existence of about 200 plants, 20 mammals, 27 butterflies, 8 dragonflies and 94 different bird species reflects the diversity of flora and fauna. Many of the common birds, mammals and butterflies are of endemic nature and have a protected status. Several concrete bunkers are used by bats as a winter residence. The Club aims to enhance nature protection by conserving indigenous species, promoting biodiversity, habitat creation and the promotion of diverse grassland.
