POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: REPORTS TO: LOCATION: Basketball Development Officer Canterbury Basketball Association Executive Officer Christchurch THE POSITION: The Basketball Development Officer for Canterbury Basketball Association Inc. is a part-time position based in the Canterbury region. PRIMARY ROLE: The primary role of the Basketball Development Officer is to increase the number of players and coaches in the catchment area and foster the development and growth of basketball among young people (particularly primary and secondary school players and coaches at all levels). To develop and maintain strong links with basketball providers, RAMS, Canterbury junior committee, clubs, and primary & secondary schools. WORK ENVIRONMENT It is expected that the BDO will have a close working relationship with the Executive Officer. The BDO will be based at the offices of Canterbury Basketball Association. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Basketball Development Officer is responsible for the following specific key objectives and identified outcomes. INITIAL HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT The Basketball Development Officer role is based on a maximum of 30 hours per week. The hours of employment will be pre determined however the hours may vary from week to week in accordance with the job needs. The Basketball Development Officer will be required to work evenings, and weekends from time to time.
KEY OBJECTIVES KEY OUTCOMES COMMUNICATION: Monthly: Meet with Executive Officer to discuss the previous months progress Report prepared for Executive Officer of Canterbury Basketball Association Irregular attendance at monthly Board meetings CBA coaching sub committee convenor Canterbury Basketball Association Junior Advisory Group convenor Basketball Development Officer Report submitted to Executive Officer prior to the last working day of each month. Prepare monthly report for Canterbury Basketball Association Board Maintain information for monthly Board reporting Regular Establish & maintain accurate record of all work undertaken. Refer to job description for the basis of all work carried out. To field and return ALL general basketball phone (and other) enquiries specifically at junior level and enquiries regarding all coaching matters. Maintain close working relationship with Executive Officer and other office staff Exemplary customer service Primary/Intermediate/Secondary schools liaison Report prepared to coincide with papers being sent to Board members Attend Board meetings when requested Attend all Junior Advisory Group meetings Keep all statistics and record work undertaken Communicate with all parties wanting relevant basketball information Endeavour to field all basketball enquiries in a positive and professional manner Ensure the needs of teams, coaches, others is met and team numbers continue to grow. Programme conformity and standardization across the Christchurch leagues.
RAMS communication and coordination Liaison with School Sport Canterbury and secondary schools to ensure the needs of the programme are being met. Manage the Coaching in Schools programme to ensure schools develop and maintain sound school programmes. Important component - ensuring both parties work cohesively to meet the greater goals of Canterbury Basketball COACH DEVELOPMENT To develop and implement programmes designed to increase the number and quality of coaches in Canterbury To provide coach education and development opportunities To establish coaches sub committee and hold regular monthly meetings Coach courses promoted and advertised Maintain accurate database of coaches Deliver and develop training programmes to meet identified needs Resource development and support at club, representative and schools levels Coaching network established o Maintain database o Arrange meetings, forum for needs Coach programme o Cover all bases Coach development o Training programmes o Accreditation programme o Needs assessments CLUB LIAISON FOCUSING ON COACH DEVELOPMENT Assist clubs to increase coaching resources (and ultimately player membership) Use yearly club model as basis for working with clubs Identify opportunities and programmes to target new coaches and identify coaches not currently coaching (reactivate coaching interests). Share resources and strategies
amongst clubs Identify necessary funding opportunities for coach development Establish U20 CBA men s grade in 2004 featuring both club and secondary school teams U20 Men s grade established in 2004 DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME To develop and implement programmes designed to increase the number, quality and enjoyment of junior players in Canterbury Establish and maintain skills/academy programmes/talent identification Coordinate Development Leagues Coordinate CBA representative programme PRIMARY/INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL LEAGUES Development Officer liaises with Schools and facility providers and works towards ownership and coordination of these competitions. Standardisation of programmes across Christchurch COACHING IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME PRIMARY/INTERMEDIATE/ SECONDARY SCHOOLS Plan and implement yearly coaching in schools programme TOURNAMENTS & HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES Support CBA Executive Officer and volunteers with respect to hosting and organisation of tournaments Programmes established and maintained and growth/results recorded Mentor coach programme works efficiently Assist with preparation of representative teams to tournaments Ensure maintenance of high standards and quality customer service Initiate talks with current providers Same policies, registration procedures, same rules, same start and finish dates. Programming consistency created across the 4 Christchurch leagues Ensure maintenance of high standards and customer service See Coaching in Schools plan Organisation and support provided when requested by Executive Officer
Provide planning and coaching support for holiday programme provision Work with RAMS management for best practice. MEDIA RELATIONS AND BASKETBALL PROFILING To raise community awareness of basketball and Canterbury Basketball Association role Liaise with relevant holiday programme providers to offer basketball coaching opportunities Canterbury School children e.g. Sport Canterbury, Media plan implemented for ALL major projects. Develop and maintain strong links with key community media Print media (local and National) radio, local TV. IDEAL PERSON PROFILE To achieve success in the role of Basketball Development Officer, it is important that the person has the following attributes: Have a passion for basketball Have strong coaching credentials Be an outstanding communicator Have excellent inter-personal skills Have excellent (and timely) reporting skills Be able to deliver (high quality) programmes in an educational setting at all levels A sound knowledge of the Canterbury Basketball Association, its goals and objectives and the programmes it supports. Confidence dealing with the media, volunteers and local authorities/community groups Excellent computer skills OTHER INFORMATION The nature of the position will require the applicant to be involved in work outside the traditional hours of 9.00am 5.00pm. The position will require a considerable evening and weekend work. A current drivers license is required The nature of the position (work carried out and hours completed) may vary from year to year based on the continued financial support from funding sources.
