Welcome 5 Peter Child President, WGMA I am delighted to be given this opportunity to welcome players to the 2nd Grand Masters Hockey Asian Cup in Hong Kong, the first tournament having been held in Singapore in 2011. I am sure that this event will again be a great success, and I am extremely grateful to David Fargus and the other members of the Organising Committee as well as to our WGMA Vice President in Asia, Kenji Hamanaka, for all their hard work in setting up the tournament. Asia is playing a highly important role in the development of Grand Masters hockey. Apart from the two WGMA Grand Masters Hockey World Cup tournaments held in Kuala Lumpur (2002) and Hong Kong (2008) where Malaysia, Japan and Hong Kong have all made World Cup appearances, all three, together with South Korea, have proven to be ambassadors for Asian Grand Masters hockey, and in recent months have also played hosts to Australian Grand Masters touring teams. I am also pleased that Alliance International Hockey Club are participating for the first time, having entered a team including numerous Asian players, thus giving an opportunity to Asian players from countries unable at present to raise a team to take part in this tournament. The next major WGMA event will be the Grand Masters Hockey World Cup in The Hague in the Netherlands in June 2014, and I hope that all four Asian members of WGMA will make efforts to participate in this highly prestigious tournament. I wish all those participating in the Grand Masters Hockey Asian Cup, and their supporters, a most enjoyable stay in Hong Kong, and especially as guests of the amazing Hong Kong Football Club with its outstanding facilities. 1 st Asian Cup, Singapore, November 2011 The 1st Asian Cup tournament, coordinated by Kenji Hamanaka, WGMA Vice President, was held in Singapore. Malaysia won the title becoming the first winner of the Asian Cup defeating Hong Kong in the final in a close match (photo shows Kenji Hamanaka presenting the Asia Cup to the Malaysian captain). Players enjoyed the games in a fair and friendly atmosphere without incident, serious injury, or suspension. The climate was generally pleasant for playing under a mostly cool cloudy sky, with occasional light showers. Thanks go to the Organizing Committee for their kind consideration for elderly players of Grand Masters by providing game time early in the morning. The tournament was played parallel to the second Masters World Cup. This was the first occasion that WGMA and IMHA have held both tournaments at the same time and place. Kenji Hamanaka, Vice President Asia, gave a farewell speech in which he expressed the appreciation of WGMA to Singapore Veterans Hockey Association for their great efforts in organising two major GM tournaments, Asian Cup and Singapore Grand Masters Cup.
