From the Membership Director Summer Time is Here! It is strongly advised for you not to say your number out loud, but to instead present your card when asked for your member number. Also please make sure that you are always printing, signing and writing your correct account number on your ticket when you charge. If you do not have a Vinoy Club membership card, please stop by the Club Office to get your photo taken or you can e-mail us a photo you would like to use, and we can mail the card to you! Around The Club School is out and Summer Time Fun has begun! For most, summer means more time in the sun. While we all love the feel of the hot sun on our back, and we all want our daily dose of Vitamin D, did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in the United States? Melanoma is responsible for about 75% of all skin cancer deaths. Because most skin cancers can be prevented, we wanted to share some Web MD smart tips to protect your skin from the sun this summer: While the best way to prevent a sun burn is to stay out of the sun, in Florida that is almost impossible but it s best to stay out of the midday sun (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) which is the strongest sunlight. Find shade if you need to be outdoors. You can calculate how much ultraviolet (UV) exposure you are getting by using the shadow rule a shadow that is longer than you are means UV exposure is low; a shadow that is shorter than you are means the UV exposure is high. Wear protective clothing such as hats with wide 4 inch brims that cover your neck, ears, eyes and scalp. Wear sunglasses with UV ray protection to prevent eye damage. Wear loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs. Wear clothing made with sun-protective fabric. These clothes have a special label that tells you how effective they are in protecting your skin from ultraviolet rays. Children should be protected from the sun right from the start. Because they spend a lot of time outdoors playing, they get most of their lifetime sun exposure in their first 18 years. It s safest to keep babies younger than six months out of the sun. Teach your children the ABC s of how to protect their skin from getting sunburned with the following: A = Away: Stay away from the sun in the middle of the day (10 a.m. 4 p.m.) B = Block: Use a sunscreen with a sun-protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher to protect babies and children s very sensitive skin. C = Cover up: Wear clothing that covers the skin, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses with UV protection. Even children one year old should wear sunglasses with UV protection. S = Speak out: Teach others to protect their skin from sun damage. While we definitely want you to enjoy your summer and time at our pools, we also want you to be safe and smart while playing in the sun! If you have forgotten your sunscreens, we do have a variety available for purchase at our Pool Huts. Cheers to your Summmmm Summmmm Summertime Fun! See you around the Club! Discounted Room Rates at the Vinoy Keep in mind that we always offer a special room rate discount for our Vinoy Club Members, their family and friends. Simply log on to www.vinoyclub.com and click on Member Reservation Link under the My Club tab. These discounts average 20% off the standard rate; prices vary depending on time of year and demand. Don t forget you will need to reserve your rooms with a major credit card. If you would like to pay for a room for your guest, you will need to fill out a separate credit card authorization form. Please contact the Club Office to obtain the form. Keep in mind that if the hotel is sold out, unfortunately the Club Office will not be able to assist. Please remember that in order to receive your food and beverage discounts, you must charge directly to your club account and not your hotel room. Charges applied to your room will not receive any discounts. Club Office E-mails Need to get in touch with someone at the Club Office? Around The Club Introducing Robert Spiars, our new Head Golf professional at The Vinoy Club Rob started his career in Golf in 1992 as an Asst. Golf Professional in Texas and has been a PGA Member since 1996. In 1997, he became the Head Golf Professional at Pecan Grove Plantation in Richmond, Texas, overseeing a 27-hole facility. He then moved Robert Spiars overseas, as General Manager of the Cancun Country Club, where he was responsible for both Golf and F&B operations. In 2002, he returned to Florida to run the Countryside Country Club with 50,000 rounds per year. In 2004, he became the formal Head Golf Professional for Cheval Golf & Country Club. Rob then pursued a career in Sales and after 6 successful years, most recently as a District Manager for Vital Care Industries; Rob is thrilled to return to his true passion as our Head Golf Professional. In his spare time, Rob enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys reading and tennis. Rob is passionate about fine wine and discovering new restaurants to enjoy. We are excited to welcome Rob to The Vinoy family! Thoughts from Fabi Tennis as a one-on-one sport Tennis is an ideal way to learn self-reliance. So here is a thought; if your child is old enough, let them pack their own tennis bag and decide if they need extra clothes, snacks, sport drink, etc. Make them responsible for making sure they wake up in enough time to have breakfast and warm up before their match. Tennis is a me sport, it is you against everyone else in a tournament, and at times can be very lonely. Time management is an essential life skill and using tennis as a learning mechanism for time management can set your child up for success on and off the court. 5

Health Club Welcome! We are so excited to welcome Shelby Brent, new Recreation Supervisor, to the Vinoy Club! Shelby recently graduated from Clemson University and she is relocating back to Florida from Charleston, SC. She has a dog named Ellie and enjoys spending time with family and traveling. She looks forward to gaining experience in the hospitality industry to grow in her career. Please give her a big welcome! Please welcome Jamie Waite, Recreation Supervisor, to the Vinoy Club! Jamie is originally from Atlanta, GA. He did a study program in Australia for 5 months and on his free time he enjoys to golf, run, bike, kayak and he recently learned to play the guitar. Be sure to say hi and introduce yourself if you see Jamie around the club! Barre Shelby Brent Jamie Waite Considering that the basic equipment (that is, a ballet barre) and many of the moves are based on classic ballet positions, it s no surprise barre was developed by a ballerina. Over the past 10 years, barre has morphed from a class for nimble dancer-types into the workout of choice for fitness fiends everywhere. But what exactly is it? While barre has origins in dance, the rhythmically challenged shouldn t worry: No tapshoes, leotards, or any fancy footwork required. Instead, barre exercises incorporate a wide variety of activities, and each has a specific purpose, such as to strengthen feet and legs, increase extension, or improve flexibility. The Benefits One of the best parts of barre is that it combines strength training and cardio, so you re burning fat and building muscle at the same time. It is a highly efficient work out that will target multiple muscle groups at once and help to raise the heart rate. The smaller movements in a barre class can bring a new level of awareness to the body that you don t get in regular strength workouts. The Vinoy Club currently offers two weekly barre classes: Cardio Barre: Mondays 5:30pm 6:30pm Express Barre: Tuesdays 12:30pm 1:00pm See you there!
