Celebrating Diamond Jubilee of the First Ascent of Mt. Everest (1953-2013)

Mt. Everest 2013 On February 21, 2013, Government of Nepal decided to celebrate Mt. Everest Diamond Jubilee from May 26 to 29, 2013 to mark the first ascent of the Mt. Everest by Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa who created a history in the field of mountaineering and opened a new era in the history of Nepal s tourism by successfully scaling the world s highest peak on May 29, 1953. This celebration is taking place in the wake of two successful national campaigns: Nepal Tourism Year 2011 and Visit Lumbini Year 2012 to give the world tourism community a message that Nepal s tourism image is distinct and will continue to stand out as the world s leading adventure destination. The objectives of this celebration are to: Commemorate the 60 th anniversary of the historic achievement on Mt. Everest Honor all Everest summiteers and those involved in mountaineering activity in Nepal Generate awareness and interest about/in Mt. Everest and mountaineering Enhance Nepal s image in adventure activities Position Nepal as a popular tourism destination in the international markets Sirish B.C.

Mt. Everest Diamond Jubilee is being celebrated as a mega event amidst several programs in and outside Nepal. The event aims to establish relations among all mountain lovers and to consolidate the relations of the Everest Summiteers from around the world. On this special occasion, tourism stakeholders from Nepal are enjoying the jubilant and festive mood with series of events. As part of the celebrations, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTA), Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in close association with other line agencies of Government of Nepal and the entire industry partners, especially in tourism and aviation sectors, are organizing following activities in Everest Region and Kathmandu.

Mt. Everest has always been the ultimate destination of every mountaineer and the most revered icon for every adventure lover. It has experienced a number of world records from climbers from around the world. Following are the some of the most prominent records created in the history of Everest summiting. 1953: First summit on May 29, 1953 by Mr. Tenzing Norgay of Nepal and Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand via the South-East Ridge Route 1975: Ms. Junko Tabei of Japan on May 16, 1975 became the first woman to reach the summit via South-East Ridge 1978: First Ascent without bottled oxygen by Mr. Peter Habeler of Austria and Reinold Messner of Italy on May 8, 1978 1980: First winter ascent by Mr. Krzysztof Wielicki of Poland on February 17, 1980 1988: First ascent by woman without oxygen Ms. Lydia Bradey of New Zealand on October 14, 1988 1993: First Nepali woman, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, summited Everest but died while descending from the summit on April 23, 1992 1998: Mr. Thomas Whittaker of USA is the first handicap (one leg artificial) to climb Mt. 1999: Mr. Babu Chhiri Sherpa of Nepal became the first climber to spend longest time (21 hrs) on the summit 2001: Mr. Erik Weihenmayer of USA became the first blind person to summit Everest on May 25, 2001 2008: All members of the First Inclusive Women s Sagarmatha Expedition reached the top on Spring, 2008 2008: Mr. Min Bahadur Sherchan, Nepal, set the record of being the oldest man at the age of 76 yrs 11 months and 6 days to climb Mt. Everest on May 16, 2008 2011: Mr. Apa Sherpa of Nepal set the record of climbing Everest 21st time on May 11, 2011 2011: Nine Nepali Civil Service Personnel climbed Everest on May 18, 2011 2011: Mr. Mingma Sherpa was the first Nepali to summit all fourteen 8000 mtrs peaks of the world 2012: Miss Ngim Chhamji Sherpa (16yrs) was the youngest climber to summit Mt. Everest on May 19, 2012 2012: Mr. Kame Sherpa, Nepal reached the summit of Mt. Everest three times in nine days on May 19, 2012
