The "GOLF COACH" Newsletter Bringing College, HS and Junior Coaches Together January 2017 Mike and I would like to thank the many coaches who submitted both content and ideas in creating this newsletter. As college coaches we have operated MGM Sports for over 15-years and speak with College, High School and Junior Tour Directors on a daily basis. Through these numerous conversations over the years our fellow coaches have constantly told us how beneficial it would be to have a forum in which golf coaches from around the country, on all levels, could exchange ideas and pertinent information with each other. Thus, YOUR newsletter is now a reality! *Reminder, please submit information/ideas for the February issue by February 15th. Golf Drills & Skills Saving shots and getting up and down is truly an art form. It requires feel, creativity, and trust. The drill I routinely incorporate is "The Gauntlet". It is very simple; take (5) balls out and drop them in the same area. Whether it is a chip, bunker shot, pitch, or whatever, your goal is to get (3) of those (5) balls within a wedge length (approx. 3 feet). If you fail, drop the (5) balls in the same area and repeat until at least (3) of (5) score is achieved. Once you score 3/5 or better move to another location and repeat. Set up at least 5 different shots in 1 practice session. Experiment with different shots like bump and run 6-irons or pitches with a gap wedge. PRO TIP: Pay attention to the particular lie of the shot you are currently attempting and notice how the ball reacts coming out of lie (i.e. tight fairway lies might have more bite/spin). If you do this drill on a regular basis, you will start to notice similarities between practice lies and game time lies which helps bridge that gap between practice and game-time play. If you can consistently hit more chips within 3 feet, you will make more up and downs, more pars, and score better. Thad Weir-Teaching Professional, Myrtle Beach, SC 3x NCAA Championship Participant & All-American Winner of (8) Collegiate Tournaments ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a practice drill your team can do when you have limited space or have no access to a short game practice area. Have your player take a wedge of his/her choosing and get 20-30 golf balls. Hit the first ball 20-25 yards and wherever that ball comes to rest, try to hit your next shot on top of that one. Continue to do this while changing both distance and direction every 3-4 balls until all balls are gone. Remember, the goal is that the ball your about to hit lands on top of where the previous one ended up. Try to do this two to three times a week. This will help develop both feel and consistency in your teams short game as well as scoring opportunities when they miss the green in regulation. Work out an arrangement with your golf course or club to do a golf team car wash. Select an area at the course where you have access to hoses and as golfers drive up ask them if they are interested in a free car wash with donations accepted towards the golf program. Their vehicle will be there for at least 4-hours while they play golf so no rush in getting it done quickly while they wait. We would recommend having an adult available in case the cars add up and need moved. Keys can be picked up at the pro shop once the wash has been completed. *Make sure to properly tag each set of keys by name, color and make of vehicle.
