Bowls is a game of strategy played on grass 5 and now also under the bright lights. On 2 November this year the Retire@Midstream residents were the proud hosts of the President of SA Bowls, the Protea mens and ladies bowling team, the Northern Gauteng and Sables teams, as well as a multitude of other bowlers in the region. The function was held to mark the occasion of the opening ceremony of the new indoor bowling rink at the retirement village. The rink is a first for South Africa where bowls is predominantly played on lawns whereas competitions in Europe and Australia regularly take place indoors. Chris Smith from Bondev welcomed the guests to Midrand Estates and Debra Fergusan, the president of SA Bowls, expressed her appreciation for the development opportunity presented to the sport through the unique facility. Fittingly Debra then rolled the first bowl and declared the rink open. Top: Chris Smith from Bondev welcomed the guest at the new facility. Left: Debra Fergusan, president of SA Bowls, rolled the first bowl at the new indoor bowling rink. During the course of the evening the Northern Gauteng teams did themselves proud by first defeating Sables and then narrowly beating the National teams. Theuns Fraser, the head coach at SA Bowls who assisted in the planning of the facility explained that the imported carpet presented players with a surface that ran true and slightly faster than lawn with the bowl running at 15 seconds instead of 12 to 13 seconds over 30m. Whilst the increase in speed presents a challenge to men it brings the game within the ambit of the lady players where less strength is required to roll the ball the required distance. Theuns Fraser, head coach at SA Bowls assisted in the planning. In the end the greatest advantage lies in being able to play bowls in the shade without interference from weather conditions. An additional bonus to be able to play at night under the lights! The RAMs club (Retire@Midstream Bowling club) will form part of the Gauteng Northern District and will be established in the new year. Those interested in playing the strategic bowling game on either lawn or carpet can contact the office at the Retire@Midstream HOA office for more details

Blue Bulls u/15 Team Leslie Stolterfoht, a Grade 9 student at Midstream College, did everyone proud when he was chosen for the U/15 Blue Bulls Invitational team earlier this year. He played for the Bulls at the Interprovincial Tournament held in Bloemfontein between the 2nd and 8th of October, where the U/15 side beat the Durban Sharks in the final. Leslie previously represented the Blue Bulls U/13 Craven side as well as the U/14 Invitational Blue Bulls side in the previous two years.

PETty about Poop? Rob is a resident in Midstream and has asked us to post a request to dog lovers. He says that he quite frequently sees dogs fouling pavements and lawns in front of residents houses. The estate House Rules dictate that dog owners must keep their dogs on leash when outside their private property, and that any fouling that may occur whilst the dogs are taking their daily walk needs to be picked up. He closes by saying that he applauds owners who carry around poop scoops and then continues by suggesting: Where possible culprits should be photographed, and reported. The guilty parties should then be fined as per the current estate Rules and Regulations. These are strong words from a resident on a topic which speaks about mutual consideration and respect. Tennis@Midstream The Tennis@Midstream Club is proud of its recent achievements during the Gauteng North Mens and Ladies league competitions. Both the first teams won their respective leagues and will be promoted to higher leagues. The full results are as follows: Men 1st team: Reserve B League winners promoted to Gauteng North Reserve A League. Men 2nd team: A3 League third position. Ladies 1st team: Reserve A League winners promoted to Gauteng North B League. Ladies 2nd team: A3 League second position. Ladies 1st team For more information on social tennis, contact Hendrik Greeff on 0824119271.

The year in Midrand Estates Reflecting, enjoying a Marks Maponyane Who will ever forget the year 2010 when the soccer world cup came to South Africa? The scholars will most probably only remember the extended holiday enjoyed by them! Others will remember the South African flag which became a household display item across the globe, and of course, the introduction of Soccer Fridays. At home Marks Maponyane assisted in carrying the colourful wakawaka soccer story to our readers and the flag tree indicated the progression of the teams throughout the tournament until the team from Spain was elevated to the top of the world - and their flag to the top of our tree. In 2010 rugby supporters flocked to Soweto to follow the Blue Bulls and were part of the larger community which was introduced to a new estate in our midst when the retirement village welcomed their first residents in April. Mr & Mrs Croukamp. Residents of Retire@Midstream Would it be possible to eclipse 2010? The cover pages of our newsletters provide insight into what took place this year. Locally the biggest story of the year has been the traffic congestion that has become an unwelcome experience in the mornings. The good news of new roads being constructed was carried in the August edition when readers were also introduced to the local traffic officials who had been tasked with providing a friendly service to alleviate the pain. As the new roads were completed they were opened progressively and after a temporary delay, construction work on the section to Nellmapius in Centurion was started in earnest during October. Completion of the roads is expected in February of 2012. Construction work pertaining to infrastructure has also been a national priority with the Gautrain and the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project being completed in 2011. The Gautrain began operating in the latter half of the year and whilst we are The opening of the new Indoor bowling facility at Retire@Midstream The Traffic officials at the road construction site all enjoying the newly completed freeways, we are holding our collective breath awaiting the announcement of the toll fees. Locally, construction work on a number of facilities was completed in the year, these being the new medical wing with the day hospital, the indoor bowling facility which was opened by the National Protea bowling team and the new church building of the Kerksondermure congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church.

nd ready to engage! During the year, through the medium of the newsletters, readers were introduced to the parks within the estates (estimated at almost 100 hectares in size), birds found in Midrand Estates (which we now call the habitat we share with others) and a regular feature on the local weather station. With part of our habitat including a shopping centre, in an edition readers were introduced to the local service providers and merchants. Midlands park and swimming pool The pretty little Cheri, photographed in one of the Square@Midstream shops - Posies. Fittingly, the first magazine cover of the year depicted a lone teddy bear used to convey feedback on the conclusion of the community charity event of 2010 whereby efforts were combined to clothe 350 orphans or disadvantaged children. This, the final edition for the year carries the proud tradition forwards with a report on the Angelfriends initiative of Midstream friends, as well as the Help-a-Granny collection which aims to assist destitute elders, and which is managed by the Retire@Midstream HOA. On a sporting note: the year will be remembered for the All Blacks winning the Rugby World Cup, the Lions surprising all by winning the Currie Cup, and finally, for the cricket match in Cape Town when the national Protea team had accumulated a score of 111 (for 1) a few minutes after 11 o clock on 11 November on their way to beat the Australian team and all of that in the year 2011! If the sequence is to reflect on the past, to enjoy the present and to engage into the future all seems to be ready to engage with eager anticipation in a bright future! 12 THROUGH THE STORM... Jesus Christ was born into this world to reconcile humankind to their Creator, whether we take this opportunity is up to us but everyone has that opportunity, nobody is beyond the reach of the Hand of God. Simply put, all of us are sinners, all of us are broken, all of us are incomplete, we are shadows of what God intended us to be. So God sent His own Son into the world to give humankind the most comprehensive and awesome insight into their Creator and His love for His Creation. Incredible promises behold, I make all things New. In the Old Testament I will restore the years the locusts have stolen simple English, even those wasted years, before I met Christ, can be used for good once my relationship with Him and my NG Gemeente Kersdiens 25 Desember 2011-09:00 Oujaarsdiens 31 Desember 2011-19:00 Sondae Dienstye Elke Sondag oggend om 09:00 Vir meer inligting kontak 012 940 9480/81 of 012 663 2003 www.kerksondermure.org deepest need for Him is acknowledged. Family, work, school, varsity, friendships and Faith itself all experience storms. Being Christian does not mean the end of the storms, but it does mean that through the storm I have a Hand to hold that will lead me, guide me, encourage me and most of all, never let me go. 15 Krieket swaai kolf in Australië Op 22 September vertrek n senior en n junior groep kranige krieketspelers vir twee weke na Australië Midstream College se eerste sporttoer oorsee. European tour delights Midstream travellers The group of Midstream travellers departed from OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday 25 September 2011. Upon arrival at Heathrow the group made their way to Stratford - upon - Avon via Oxford where even the old universities were found to be interesting. They were treated to various productions every evening which included The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth. The next stop was Venice, where the hotels, sights, sounds and nightlife was fascinating. Rome stood out, however, because of the Colosseum and the Vatican City. As the tour guide Tim said as the group returned home, Let this trip not be the whole adventure but rather have whet the appetite and turned the first page in your personal book of adventurous travels.

(Fig.: 05). Kuifkopvisvangers broei in holtes in vertikale grondwalle naby water. Fig: 04 Nie alle visvangers vang visse nie.

Caskin White attended the U12 Kenanko South Africa Interprovincial Rournament in George at Kingswood GC where he represented SA Kids golf team at the tournament. The weather was tough with wind and rain on most days and the official practice round cancelled on the Sunday due to bad weather. Caskin finished 49th out of 105 children. Considering he is only 11 and a year younger than most of his competitors, this was a learning experience for him, he competed well and he looks forward to next year s tournament in Nelspruit when he is 12 and the conditions will suit the Gautengers. Baie geluk. NO GUTS, NO GLORY, NO MERCY MCCA Camp 2011 Kultuurfees Die kultuurfees is die hoogtepunt op Midstream College Laerskool se kultuurkalender. On Friday, 14 October 2011 a very excited group of 58 Midstream College Christian Action Group members boarded the buses and headed South towards Schickfontein to the Kimiad Christian Campsite. The theme for the camp was based on Psalm 40:3 Sing a new song to the Lord. This fun, God-filled weekend included praise and worship sessions, heartfelt messages, an obstacle course and other group games. The weekend was a huge success and the children returned home on Sunday afternoon with spirit-filled souls, a healthy dose of sun and fond memories.

Stray Pets... Pets going astray in Midrand Estates What happens next? and how to prevent it. Despite our best efforts, from time to time our pets get out of our properties. Some don t wander far before returning home but others find they are unable to get back home. Often these pets are picked up by concerned members of the community and brought to the vet. We have a system in place to try and find the owners. Every stray animal is scanned when arriving at the clinic. This is to check for a microchip. If they are chipped, we are able to re-unite the pets and owners very quickly. Unfortunately most of the time the pets don t have microchips or collars with tags. Our next step is to search our database for existing patients that match the description of the stray. Our search is refined by focusing on the estate in which the animals were found. This search involves phoning all clients that live in that estate, that have a pet matching the description. Often it is a very successful exercise and we are able to re-unite the animals with their owners. Unfortunately it is a search that is limited to pets registered with the clinic. If all our attempts fail the animal must then be handed over to the SPCA. This is a very traumatic experience for all involved. If you lose a pet, please come ask at the Vet. It seems we are the last place people think to ask when their pets go missing. For anyone going away this December: 1. Ensure your pets can be identified collar and tag or microchip. 2. Advise the person caring for them that they can ask at the Vet if the pet gets lost. 3. Ensure your address details are current so we can get hold of you. 4. Consider registering your pet with us it s free. This way we can offer you a better service!. LOCAL IS LEKKER... 34 The Annual General Meetings: The Annual general meetings (AGMs) of the various HOAs normally take place towards the end of each year. This year the meetings were again characterised by lively debate and a good turnout of residents. The financial statements of the HOAs were discussed and a stable financial situation was portrayed. Cash reserves were in place and proper accounting processes were shown to have been followed. Copies of the financial statements and the HOA budget, as well as the minutes of previous AGMs, are available on the web site www.midrand-estates.co.za. Without exception, the HOAs reported an exemplary security record with the limited incidents which took place relating to either vandalism or theft of minor 1. Midstream HOA building material on construction sites. More than 400 residents attended the Midstream AGM which took place on 25 October at Midstream College. It was announced at the meeting that Genl Suiker Britz had resigned as Estate Manager and that Jan Zeederberg had stepped down as Director. Following a question from the floor it was confirmed that in the interim, the Estate Manager s functions would be divided between Etienne Begemann and Paul Meyer. In line with House Rules the HOA introduced a system whereby Directors would be elected on a rotational basis for a two year period. Seven residents made themselves available for the four available positions on the Board. The vote took place by ballot paper and in the week following the AGM the Auditors announced the following members had been elected: Koot Myburgh, Etienne Hefer, Ken Greve, Lewis Mathieson, Louis Botha, Hennie Vermeulen and new to the board, Naudé Klopper. 3. Midlands HOA The auditorium at Midstream College was the venue for the Midlands HOA AGM which took place on 15 November. Several nominations were received for the four available positions, and the elected Board for 2011/12 will be Chris Smith, André Oosthuizen, Jan Zeederberg, Petrus Theron, Pieter Engelbrecht, Riaan Botma and Thinus du Toit. With almost 170 houses currently under construction, and a large number of open stands, a great deal of the discussion at the meeting revolved around building related topics. In addition to the above, the following matters were reported on at the respective meetings. 2. Midfield HOA The well attended AGM for the Midfield HOA took place 1 November in the community hall of the R e t i r e @ M i d - stream HOA. The HOA is chaired by André Oberholzer who was reelected to the Board unopposed, along with Chris Smith, Jan Rhoodie, Deon Louw, Riaan Botma and Jan Zeederberg. Only one nomination was received for the vacant position on the Board and Rapula Modibane was duly elected. 4. Retire@Midstream HOA The final AGM for Midrand Estates was scheduled for 25 November and at the date this newsletter went to print the results of the new board was not known.

Regional Roads To offset the growth in traffic following the tremendous increase in the number of families residing in the area, the construction of roads in and around Midrand Estates has been eagerly awaited. The construction program commenced in May this year. Completion of the project to construct 7 kilometres of roads at a cost of R35 million is expected in February 2012. The project will include the construction of traffic-light managed intersections at Nellmapius and Brakfontein Roads. In addition to the construction of new roads, discussions are currently underway with the Tshwane Metro regarding the optimisation of traffic flow along Brakfontein Road through the synchronisation of traffic lights and the adjustment of the allocated green time of certain traffic lights. Road Safety in the Estate Most of us always seem to be in a hurry and then seem to forget our responsibility of safe driving. The Estate boasts and encourages safety on all levels, especially where children is concerned. We strive towards a childfriendly environment, where children can walk safely, ride their bicycles and play. Although the emphasis is mostly on the vehicle- and motorcycle drivers, our cyclists at play and pedestrians need to follow traffic rules to ensure everyone s safety as well. Parents need to educate their children to ensure their safety on the estate roads, sidewalks and pathways. The law states that where there is a pavement, no pedestrian should walk in the roadway. Pedestrians are advised to use pavements where available. Where there is no pavement, walk as far as possible to the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. One cannot be surprised by something coming up behind you and if any-thing looks dangerous, one has enough time to step even further away from the road. It is safer to cross the road at a marked pedestrian crossing, but even then, do not expect drivers to stop for you. They may not notice you; or not watching properly. Always remember to stop, look for turning vehicles from ahead and behind you and make sure the traffic has stopped before you start crossing. See and be seen is always the rule for crossing the street [whether by foot or bicycle]. Our [more responsible] adult drivers [and especially our learner drivers], need to be cautious of pedestrians and cyclists within the estate. Abide by the traffic rules and speed limits to ensure accident-free roads. The general traffic laws apply do not speak on your cellphone while driving, be alert and be safe! The House Rules dictate that only licensed vehicles may travel on the estate roads thus no golf carts or quadand pit bikes and that vehicles must be under the control of licensed drivers.

Before you leave on holiday Lock up! Past experience has shown that a number of residents forget to lock their homes before leaving on holiday! Make sure that your front door and other doors are locked before you leave. Close windows properly. Garden services, construction work and emergencies Routine garden services may proceed as normal when you re away on leave. Make the necessary arrangements for access to your yard. Emergency maintenance will be allowed. NO CONSTRUCTION will be allowed after the 15th of December [Midlands 13 December]. Help to keep the perimeter fence trouble free Residents who live next to a border fence / electrical fencing, are requested to add to the estate s security by trimming and cutting trees and shrubs well away from the fence. Plants touching the fence will lead to false alarms on the fence and thereby hinder the proper functioning of the fence. Take proper care of your pets For those leaving their pets behind please take proper care of your pets. Arrange in time at your estate office for the right to enter the estates for people that may require access to look after your pets on your behalf.
