Last Saturday I was very proud to be with our Senior Cup team at Oughterard GC to see them off, they performed brilliantly qualifying for the Connacht Final in August. Congratulations to Team Captain Shane Flanagan and our Junior Convenor Robbie Fitzpatrick who looked after the team last weekend, it was clear that the lads were relaxed and feeling confident. I was also privileged to attend Captains Days at Enniscrone GC and Strandhill GC, both clubs offered superb hospitality, they are good neighbours and great rivals as results this year have shown. This Saturday is my Captains Day and I look forward to welcoming you all on the day, on a personal note I thank everyone for their support and look forward to a great day, let s hope for a break in the weather. Jeff Hatt Captain

Captain Jeff Hatt Senior Cup Qualify for Connacht Finals Cian Feeney 73 Declan Reidy 73 Ruiri O Connor 75 Mark Morrissey 75 Steffan O Hara 76 Our senior cup men's team qualified for the Connaught semi final in early August as they finished joint best score in Oughterard with Galway GC.Team captain Shane Flanagan has been working tirelessly with our very talented squad over the last number of months and the hard work paid off as we prepare for the finals in Ballinrobe. First out was Declan Reidy with senior cup panellist TJ Ford on the bag. Declan put the upset of his car breaking down behind and focused on the job in hand. A 1 over 73 was a great start and gave his team mates behind a target to catch. Next out was Ruairi O'Connor with panellist David Brady calling the yardages. Ruairi, who is having a great year was focused all the way around and came in with a solid 75. Steffan OHara with panellist Alan Gaynor caddying was out third. He gave a masterclass in putting and except for 2 holes his round of 76 was a joy to watch. Leading west of Ireland qualifier, Cian Feeney with his good friend Rory Mullen calling the shots was out fourth. A masterful short game ensured Cian matched Declan for best team score, a very relaxed 73. At this stage we were looking very likely that we were through to the next stage and with one player left we were lying in second place, one shot behind Galway. Step up Mark Morrisey with senior cup veteran Shane Underwood by his side and Mark showed us a display of driving any pro would be happy with. A 18 foot putt on the final hole for a 75 meant both ourselves and Galway finished a combined +8 for the best four cards. Galway go through as leading qualifier and play Oughterard while Co. Sligo play Galway bay in the other semi final. These matches will be played over the August weekend 5/6/7. Our players and caddies were a credit to our club and they really appreciated captain Jeff coming down to support them. Robert Fitzpatrick Acting Captain for the dayacting Athlone have relinquished their provincial crown failing to qualify finishing eight shots off the pace. 1st Galway 296 (Best 3 cards) 2nd Co. COURSE MANAGER REPORT OVERVIEW COMMENTARY 4 TH July 2016 Course in reasonable condition over the next few days. Greens today are running at 9.3ft which is a good average speed. They have been cut and rolled. Bunkers have been raked and holes changed to middle of greens. (Remember green markers on tees) white markers are still out due to a couple of visitors playing this morning. 3rd green is looking a little bare at the moment but is still playing OK. It has got fertiliser last week so should recover soon. We have also disease on the greens at present called Anthracnose this disease only attacks the annual meadow grass (poa) I will be keeping a close eye on this over the next couple weeks and will make a call on maybe applying a fungicide Practice Area beside Clubhouse No practice is permitted on the practice ground adjacent to the car park unless you are hitting pitch shots to the pitching green. Over the last few weeks a number of golf balls have landed in the caravan park and also on two occasions caravans were damaged by golf balls.

FRANCIS HOWLEY Former member and local Francis Howley had been appointed Head Professional at Portmarnock Golf Club. This is a great move for Francis who has made huge strides at Carton House where he is not only Head Pro but also Director of Golf. Francis represented Co. Sligo at all levels when growing up in Rosses Point and is a regular visitor here, where his mum Felicia always has a big welcome for Francis, his wife Siobhan and their three kids, Isobel, DJ and Jessica. Francis played for a number of years on the European Tour gaining his card the same time as three time major winner Padraig Harrington. Lifelong friend Shane Flanagan was on the bag for Francis at that event and Shane is happy to talk to members about that week, it is worth a listen. There was huge interest in the job at Portmarnock and the club are delighted to have someone of the professionalism that Francis will bring to their club. We wish Francis and his family all the best with his new club. Robert Fitzpatrick Francis Howley Co Sligo Irish Youth International 1990 Another drive on 8 that fails to make the carry and ends up in a tricky lie Answer 1: Yes, balls belonging to the same side may be played in the order the side considers best. Rule 30-3b. Answer 2: a) There is no penalty. Rule 19-5a. Note: Most golfers do not realise that in match play, there is no penalty when a player's ball strikes another ball on the putting green, even if the stroke was made on the putting green.
