Otera Open Sunday (August 12) is the seventh and final day of competition for the US$350,000 Otera Open, the 10th of 13 double gender events this season on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour. The inaugural Otera Open in Kristiansand oficialy started Tuesday, and concludes Saturday for women and Sunday for men. The winning teams in each gender will share the $30,000 first-place prizes. The 13th SWATCH-FIVB World Tour stop in 2007 for both men and women, the Otera Open will be played on the Tresse in the city centre of Kristiansand. Country quota playoffs were held Monday for women and Tuesday for men for teams from Brazil and Norway. The qualifiers were held Tuesday for women and Wednesday for men to determine the final eight berths in each gender s Main Draw where a double-elimination format will be used to set the final four teams. The women s semi-finals and medal matches wil be played Saturday. The men s final four matches will be played Sunday. A total of 61 men s and 54 women s teams from 34 countries have competed in the Otera Open, including Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the Ukraine. The Otera Open is the 162nd women s and the 204th men s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball events (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwil). The first men s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first women s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain. 2007 Tour Notes August 11 Update 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Highlighted by SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Switzerland and four Grand Slams events in France, Norway, Germany and Austria, the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour will feature 23 events on four continents with prize money at US$8.35-million. The 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour schedule will feature 18 events for men and 17 tournaments for the women with 13 double gender stops. The SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Gstaad will feature $1-millon in prize money while Paris, Stavanger, Berlin and Klagenfurt will host Grand Slam stops where the combined prize money will be $2.4-milion for the combined men s and women s events. Event sites hosting international Beach Volleyball events for the first-time include Manama, Bahrain (men), Singapore (women), Seoul, Korea (women), Kristiansand, Norway (men women) and Aland, Finland (men and women). Fortaleza, Brazil will stage a double gender event for the first time after staging separate men s (1994-1997, 2002) and women s (2000-2001 and 2004) events.
