Spotlight on Karaka 2015: Redwood s First Yearlings THE INSIDE WORD 28 NOVEMBER 2014 Each week leading up to the 2015 NZB Yearling Sale we will take a look at some of the offerings from Westbury Stud s quality draft. A highlight of this year s draft is the first crop of world-class Group 1 winning son of High Chaparral, Redwood. We take a look back at the exceptionally handsome stallion himself, who is built in the mould of his highly successful sire, and get a sneak peek at two of his stunning yearlings, who are showing more than a shade of their sire. Redwood was a high class, tough galloper who raced out of stakes company only once in a 17-start career, accumulating stake earnings of more than $2.3m. Redwood raced with distinction in five countries, winning the Group 1 Northern Dancer Stakes on turf at Woodbine, Canada, the Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood and the Listed Feilden Stakes at Newmarket. Redwood was also a gallant second in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic and Group 1 Hong Kong Vase. During his career, Redwood met and defeated the likes of Manighar, Glass Harmonium and My Kingdom of Fife, who all won at the highest level in Australia. He hails from an outstanding family as his dam, the Woodman mare Arum Lily, is a daughter of the French Champion Three Year-Old Jolypha (Lyphard), a sister to the superstar Dancing Brave. His fourth dam Olmec is a daughter of 1963 Golden Slipper winner and sire success Pago Pago (Matrice). Redwood has been popular with breeders, covering 106 mares in his first season, and has impressed with the types he has sired, with strong, athletic progeny who have inherited his nature and temperament. Among the representatives at Karaka are Lot 235 : a half-brother to the dual G2 winner Sound Journey Lot 584: a colt from the half-sister to G3 winners Full of Spirit and Lady Cumquat Lot 644: a son of the half-sister to the dual G1 winner Sirmione Lot 981: a colt from the daughter of G1 winner Penny Gem Lot 467: a half-sister to the stakes placed Gold Medals Lot 521: a daughter of the G3 placed Marsh Harbour Lot 678: a half-sister to the tough dual G3 winner McClintock Top: Lot 981 (Redwood x Glory Run colt). Westbury Stud Trio Line Up at Ellerslie Three high-profile Westbury Stud connected runners will step out tomorrow at Ellerslie when Huka Eagle, Red Striker and Liten Prinsessa all use the Super Fence 1300m as a stepping stone to richer assignments over the Christmas/ New Year period. By exciting young Westbury Stud sire Swiss Ace, Tony Pike s promising threeyear-old Huka Eagle puts his unbeaten record on the line in the age group event. We ll get a good line on him he s probably not going to run a Derby distance, but we re confident he can get up to 1600 metres so the target for him will be the Karaka Mile, Pike said. Huka Eagle (ex Ugly Betty) has won both his starts at Taupo and Ellerslie and has been kept up to the mark with a trial success at Rotorua last week. He had some time off after his last run and he trialled up nicely, Pike said. We rode him cold to get him to relax. Smart filly Liten Princessa also comes into the race undefeated, and has created a very good impression at her two raceday appearances to date, including her last start at Hawkes Bay over 1400m, winning by a length and stopping the clock at a very quick 1:21.65 for the 1400m which was more than half a second faster than the Rating 85 horses recorded earlier in the day. Liten Prinsessa (Bernardini x Dawn Almighty) is a full-sister to Champion 2YO Ruud Awakening, and is raced by her breeder Watson Bloodstock and trained at Cambridge by Stephen Marsh. Red Giant filly Red Striker comes into the event off a decisive victory at her last start at Cambridge, and has only been out of the money once in seven starts. Red Striker was one of three winners for Red Giant two weekends ago along with The Red Prince and Realta and, as predicted, they are now starting to make their presence felt as they are getting to a more suitable journey as three-year-olds. Whosyourmaster Looks to Master Them All in G3 Lindauer Concorde Matamata trainers Lance O Sullivan and Andrew Scott s stable sprint star Whosyourmaster (pictured) will contest the Group 3 $70,000 Lindauer Concorde Handicap over 1200m tomorrow at Ellerslie. O Sullivan is expecting another typically honest run from the gelding who produced one of the runs of the race in the Listed Counties Bowl last start, dashing home late for fifth with O Sullivan commenting That s just him. He keeps his form pretty consistent. He doesn t change much day to day, the old boy.he s up in the weights and he ll need things to go his way, but he s capable if all the ducks line up in a row. He ll be better suited to the set weights and penalties conditions of the Railway Stakes and the Telegraph Handicap. Leading apprentice Rory Hutchings, who has had four rides on Whosyourmaster for two wins and two placings, returns to the saddle on Saturday. The talented Captain Rio gelding is bred and raced by Danny and Judy Moss, out of the Wild Rampage mare Peace of Mind, and is half-brother to Group One winning mare Keep The Peace. Among the opposition for Whosyourmaster in tomorrow s Concorde Handicap are two Westbury born products in Mosse and Ruud Awakening who both started off new campaigns in the Counties Bowl two weeks ago, Ruud Awakening just beaten by In Style and Mosse making up good ground over the last 200m it was his first race in two years and he is sure to have derived benefit from the outing.

Breeding Report Sales Manager Gareth Smith Makfi colt an early offering at Karaka. As the saying goes It s the early bird that catches the worm and Westbury have a fine looking catch in the Makfi colt out of the mare Katmai, that will go through the ring as Lot 5 at the NZB Premier Yearling sales on Tuesday 26th January 2015. The attractive colt caught my eye at one of our yearling parades this week and the perfectly conformed chestnut looks like he will furnish into an attractive sales yearling. By Westbury shuttle sire Makfi (Dubawi), the colt is out of the 2YO Adelaide winner Katmai (Strategic), a three-quarter sister to the Sydney listed winner and group placed Kakakakatie (Zedative), who, in addition to her five wins at 1200m, also ran 3rd in the Group 3 STC Research Stakes. Both mares are daughters of the Danehill mare ST Kate who won twice as a two-year-old and is the dam of seven winners. This is a classy speed family that also includes the stakes winners Telesto, Fraternity, Bonanova, Saint Encosta, Kittens and Sheer Talent. Makfi, the sire of 18 individual two-year-old winners, looks a great fit with this family and it will be interesting to see which stable this lovely colt will end up in after the sale. A quiet, well behaved colt, he has been a pleasure to prepare and looks to have all the attributes required to make a successful race horse. Pictured: Makfi Photo Credit: Lesley Warwick
