SAILING INSTRUCTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR B.Y.C. YACHT RACES - ALL CLASSES G1 Club races will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the prescriptions of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), the rules of each Class concerned and the additional / amended rules contained in these Sailing Instructions. G2 Yachts will be handicapped in accordance with the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme. Handicaps will be allocated by the Sailing Committee and may be adjusted at any time. Any person requiring a handicap, must inform the Race Officer or Sailing Secretary before the event. Any person objecting to a handicap must do so in writing to the Sailing Committee. G3 Outright Trophies can only be won by Benfleet Yacht Club Members, with the exception of trophies offered for competition in Open Events. G4 Identification on Sails: RRS Rule 77 does not apply. G5.1 Any yacht that alters her sails, hull or its trim after being handicapped, must notify the Sailing Secretary in writing for reassessment of its handicap before racing again, otherwise she shall be disqualified. G5.2 A yacht competing in a Points Series, shall not be materially changed during that series. G6 Scoring system for Dinghy & Cruiser Points Series Races : The low points scoring system, RRS Appendix A2 will apply, with the exception that Appendix A5 will replace the second paragraph of A2.2 see also Additional Sailing Instructions.. below. G7.1 The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole responsibility of the owner or person in charge who must ensure that the boat and crew are adequate to face the conditions that may arise in the course of the race. Neither these sailing instructions nor any inspection of the boat limits or reduces the absolute responsibility of the owner / person in charge for the crew, the boat and her management. The race organisers (Benfleet Yacht Club) shall not be responsible for any loss, damage, death or personal injury howsoever caused to the owner / person in charge or crew, as a result of their taking part in any race(s). Moreover, every owner / person in charge warrants the suitability of the boat for the race or races. G7.2 Attention is drawn to the RYA safety requirements and their recommendations regarding insurance. ADDITIONAL SAILING INSTRUCTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS - CRUISER CLASSES C1 Unless otherwise specified in the Racing Entry Instructions, to be eligible for entry into BYC cruiser racing, a yacht must have a fixed cabin and a minimum of two permanent berths. C2 Race Entry Forms will be posted on the Sailing Notice Board. Late or incomplete entries will only be accepted at the discretion of the Race Officer.

C3 Details of Course, Start and Finish will be advised on the Race Entry form. Courses may be altered up to the Warning Signal. C4.1 Starting Signals: Races will be started using RRS rule 26 with the Warning Signal given 5 minutes before the starting signal. Signal Warning Flag and sound Class flag & 1 sound* - 5 minutes before start. Preparatory P flag & 1 sound* - 4 minutes before start. One-minute Preparatory flag removed & 1 long sound * Starting Class flag removed & 1 sound * C4.2 * - RRS Rule 25 & 26 will apply with the exception that signals may be made by sound only. C4.3 Starting Penalties: no part of RRS Rule 30 will apply. C4.4 Starting Recall Signals: RRS Rule 29 will apply, with the exception that signals will be made by a sound only; one sound for an individual recall, two for a general recall. Each competitor shall ensure that they have started correctly. C5 Race Timing: In the absence of a Race Officer / Committee boat at the finish line, competitors shall time themselves over the finish line and advise the Race Officer as soon as possible. C6 Time Limit:- Rule 35 of the RRS will not apply unless advised otherwise on the Race Entry form. C7 Points Series Scoring: Points from two races (with the worst case scores) will be discarded from the total. Points series races are defined in the BYC Sailing Programme. C8 Protest time limit: Protests must be submitted to the Race Officer or Sailing Secretary within 24 hours after the last boat finishing the race. This amends RRS Rule 61.3. ADDITIONAL SAILING INSTRUCTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS - DINGHY CLASSES D1 The Race Entry form will be available on the day of the race. All competing boats must be entered at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the race. Late or incomplete entries will only be accepted at the discretion of the Race Officer. D4 Starting Line: Unless advised otherwise on the Race Entry form, the Starting Line will be a straight line between the Flagstaff in front of the 'Race Hut' and an outer limit buoy (known as the Distance Mark) moored on the opposite side of the deep water channel, starting in a West to East direction. D5 Finish Line: Unless advised otherwise on the Race Entry form, the Finish Line shall be same as the start line but finishing in a East to West direction. D6 Time Limit'- Rule 35 will not apply unless advised otherwise on the Race Entry form. D7 Points Series Scoring: Points from one race (with the worst case score) shall be discarded from each race series, Points series races are defined in the BYC Sailing Programme. D8 Personal Floatation Devices: RRS Rule 40.1 shall apply, with the exception that flag 'Y' need not be displayed. Competitors shall, at all times whilst racing, wear suitable Personal Floatation Devices. Failure to comply will result in disqualification. D9 Protest time limit: in line with RRS Rule 61.3 - "within 2 hours of the last boat finishing the race". D10 Support Boat cover will be provided during club racing times when possible. Where Support Boat cover is provided, the club still do not accept any responsibility for accidents, injury or death to competitors, or damage to their craft, whilst racing. The decision to race is the responsibility of the competitor and their crew. D11 It is recommended that all dinghies taking part in Club Races should have: a) Oars or at least one paddle. b) An anchor of sufficient weight to hold the boat against the tide. c) A suitable length of rope to act as an anchor warp or painter when necessary (not part of the boats rigging). d) A bucket or bailer.

D12 Members are permitted to use a club dinghy providing the following guidelines are adhered to: a) The helm must be a Benfleet Yacht Club member and a competent dinghy sailor. b) The use of a club dinghy is at the discretion of the Sailing Committee and they have the right to refuse any member use of a club dinghy. c) The dinghy and its equipment must be returned to the dinghy park and equipment stored as found. d) Any faults/damage to the dinghy must be reported to the Dinghy Captain, dinghy park administrator or Bosun. e) The helm is liable for any costs incurred due to an incident/accident or damage occurring whilst using a club dinghy. This includes any insurance excesses and/or uninsured losses. SERVICES USING THE BYC CRANE Members may request the services of the authorised crane operators: 1. The member should ensure that the vessel is insured in accordance with BYC General Rules. 2. The member should make contact with the crane operating crew and agree the work required and arrange a provisional date. It may be necessary to hold the action on a list to group work on several boats together and to suit availability of the crane operators. This will often be on Wednesdays or at quiet times on site. 3. The member must be present during the operation. On the day of the work the crane crew will provide a Driver and a Slinger. Two more physically fit people should be available to assist with hoisting and control provided by the member. If several boats are being worked on then members may help each other. 4. Guidelines for mast raising or lowering and engine lifts are available to view in a folder in the Green Portacabin. 5. Members are required to pay a fee for crane services to the Finance Committee.

MOORINGS AND FORESHORE REGULATIONS & INSTRUCTIONS (updated December 2009) The following rules have been drawn up to give all members a fair and equal use of Club facilities. Failure to follow these instructions will probably inconvenience other members and may result in sanctions against the offending member. A Club member bringing a craft of any description on to the Club's property or into contact with facilities provided by the Club shall be deemed to acknowledge a contractual obligation with the Club to discharge facility fees levied from time to time and to comply with the following regulations and such additional or amended regulations as may be exhibited upon the Club premises from time to time. GENERAL 1. Boats may not be brought onto the Club Premises without permission. 2. Members are responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of areas occupied by them. Such areas when vacated must be left completely clear and tidy. If the area is not cleared, labour will be engaged and the offending member charged with the cost. 3. Mains Electricity on site is provided for use of power tools and lighting only, Cables must be disconnected and removed when the owner is not on Club premises. 4. ELECTRIC WELDERS may only be used by written permission of the Moorings Committee. 5. Permission by the Club to use a facility or allocation of a mooring site shall not in any way imply a warranty on the part of the Club as to the suitability or safety of such facility or mooring site or any existing materials or equipment therewith. A member using any facility or mooring site shall be deemed to be satisfied as to its suitability and safety. 6. Every member using Club facilities and mooring sites shall indemnify and save harmless the Club, its members, servants, agents or visitors from any costs, claims or damages howsoever directly arising. 7. All boats must display names. 8. Members are reminded that there are no facilities for emptying chemical toilets on the club's premises. It is the members' responsibility for such disposal elsewhere. Rubbish can be disposed of in the industrial bins provided to the west of the car Park. 9. When a member sells his boat to a non club member they are still deemed to be responsible for that craft until it leaves the club's premises, either by road or sea and they have to be present on the day the boat leaves the club's site.

10. No shot blasting or similar operation is to carried out on the club's premises, on either boats or trailers. MOORINGS (Trot, Staging and Rill) 1. All tenancies terminate on the 31st December, fees payable in advance. 2. Moorings may be used by Club Members only and are not transferable between members. 3. Moorings are allocated to a particular boat and a member may not put another boat on that mooring without permission of the Moorings Committee. 4. Craft occupying Club moorings must not be used as places of residence. 5. Moorings not used for a period of two years may be reallocated by the Moorings Committee. 6. All moorings are subject to inspection and approval of the Moorings Committee. TROT MOORINGS Craft must be moored fore and aft using minimum 3/8in (10mm) chain, with rope tails, and fitted to a screw eye. Note: use of bridles in the creek bed is not permitted by the PLA. The length of chain is to be specified by the Moorings Committee, The buoy line must be of sinkable material. Mooring buoy(s) must be clearly marked with the number of the mooring. Chains, ropes and buoy to be provided by the owner. Screw eyes must be purchased from the club. Charges are based on length of boat plus 4 feet. Chains, ropes and buoy must not be removed from moorings. STAGINGS 1. Stagings must be constructed in accordance with the plans available from the Moorings Committee and the main uprights dug at least four feet into the creek bed. 2. Stagings must be positioned as instructed by the Moorings Committee and may not be more than six feet above the height of the Saltings. 3. Stagings not constructed or positioned as instructed may have to be taken down. 4. Bow, stern and two springs must be used for mooring. All lines must be secured to the shore. 5. Charges are levied on the length of boat.

6. All bankside moorings have a 'maximum boat length' allotted to them, which must be strictly adhered to. If uncertain of your moorings maximum length, please contact the Bosun. RILL MOORINGS Rill Moorings may be allocated by special permission of the Moorings Committee. HAULING OUT, LAUNCHING AND LAYING (Ashore, Mud Berths, Saltings) 1. Club facilities, slipway, winch, tractor, trolleys, etc are available for the benefit of all members, but plant may only be operated by personnel authorised by the Moorings Committee. Application for boat movements must be made on the appropriate form to the Moorings Committee giving at least two weeks notice. Members may not use these facilities without the permission of the Moorings Committee and a member of the Moorings Committee must be present when launching or hauling out is taking place. 2. The Moorings Committee reserve the right to require owners to move their boats to an alternative position if they deem this necessary. CRADLES AND TROLLEYS 1. Club Trolleys are available through the Moorings Committee for the use of members. Members are, however, strongly recommended to provide their own trolleys. Keel boats must have a suitable cradle. 2. All cradles and trolleys are subject to inspection by the Moorings Committee for suitability for use on Club grounds. Any member attempting to use a cradle or trolley which has been deemed unsuitable, will have his application to move, launch or haul out refused. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that his cradle or trolley is completely suitable and if necessary, advice should be sought from the Moorings Committee. 3. The owner must prepare the trolley and report to the Beachmaster at least two hours before high water. The owner must provide sufficient labour for the intended operation and have at least two people on board the vessel for launching and hauling out, which do not include any members from the 'Moorings' launching party. 4. All gear must be restored immediately after use. 5. Boats laid up ashore must be securely chocked. When trolleys are removed, boats should be lowered to a safe height, preferably with the keel not more than 12 in. above the ground. 6. Members with boats occupying mud berths or laid up on the saltings must not dig out berths or erect structures without permission of the Moorings Committee.

BOAT BUILDING 1. A limited amount of space is available for members to build or complete part built boats. Written application must be made to the Moorings Committee giving estimated start and finish dates and details of the craft. 2. Boats may not be brought onto the Club Premises without written permission from the Moorings Committee. 3. Contractors/Sub Contractors may not be engaged to carry out work on Club premises without written agreement of the Moorings Committee. 4. A member may after completion of two year's membership, apply for building space. From date of launching, a further three year period is required before another project can be undertaken. 5. No electric heaters may be used except by permission of the Moorings Committee. 6. Members wishing to protect their craft with anything other than the usual boat cover must first obtain permission from the Moorings Committee. PONTOONS AMD SHORT STAY STAGING This facility is intended to enable members to load and unload boats, and to give all members an equal chance should be used for short stay (thirty minutes) only. Members wishing to lay alongside for a longer period must first obtain the permission of a member of the Moorings Committee. SLIPWAY Loading and unloading of craft should be from the pontoon and short stay staging, and not from the slipway. Members wishing to lay on the slipway must first obtain permission from a member of the Moorings Committee. DINGHY PARK RULES (Updated 2015) 1. Members may request a space in the dinghy park by written application to the Sailing Committee. The allocation is for a year and will be automatically renewed. The allocated space may be changed. Dinghies may be moved, in which case the member will be notified of the dinghy's new position. 2. Members must clearly mark their dinghy with their name or the boat's name for easy identification. 3. Dinghies should be adequately secured against wind and tide. The dinghy park is exposed and may flood on occasions. Property is stored on site at the member's own risk. 4. Members are expected to keep the allocated space tidy, free of weeds and debris and with the grass cut.
