Co-Head Coach Laura Seibold-Caudill Laura Seibold-Caudill Co-Head Coach 30th Season at Ball State Career: 253-154-3 MAC: 84-95-1 Alma Mater: Michigan State, 1976 A two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year (1989-90 & 2003-04), Laura Seibold-Caudill embarks on her fifth season as co-head coach of the Ball State swimming & diving program and her 30th season overall at BSU, after serving as the women s swimming & diving head coach for 25 years. In her 29 previous season with the Cardinals, Seibold-Caudill boasts a 253-154- 3 (.621) career record, including a 84-95-1 (.469) mark in Mid-American Conference meets. She has helped guided the Ball State women s squad to third-place finishes at the league championship meet on four occasions, while helping the men s program to a top three finish in her first season as co-head coach of the program in 2004-05. Over her career, Seibold-Caudill has coached her student-athletes to MAC individual championships a total of 34 times, while helping guide her relay teams to four titles. Her student-athletes have earned First Team All-MAC honors 28 times, while collecting Second Team All-MAC accolades on 17 occasions. She has also coached her athletes to two All-America honors, four MAC Diver of Year awards, three MAC Outstanding Senior awards and two MAC Swimmer of the Year honors. In addition, she has coached two individual NCAA National Championships qualifiers, two U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials participants and five International Olympic Team Trial participants. The Cardinals latest MAC individual champion came in 2005-06 when then the MAC Outstanding Senior award winner Kurtis Leer swept the freestyle sprint events, winning the 50, 100 and 200 titles. Leer, who is BSU s record holder in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, finished his career as a six-time MAC champion, also winning all three events his junior year (2004-05). On the women s side, Seibold-Caudill helped guide Sarah Welter to the 100 backstroke title at the 2004-05 MAC Championships. Welter also swam the first leg of the 200 Medley Relay squad which captured the event title the same year with a school-record clocking of 1:45.04. Joining Welter in the relay were Tara Zimmer, Erin Johnson and Karla Bailey. In her final season as the lone head coach for the women s program, Seibold-Caudill captured the 2003-04 MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award after guiding her squad to an 11-5 dual meet record and a fourth-place finish at the MAC Championships. A former collegiate diver, Seibold-Caudill helped Beth Clarke capture diving titles on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards during the 1997-98 season, which earned her MAC Diver of the Year accolades. Clarke picked up the award again in 2000-01 after capturing the MAC title for a second time on the 1-meter board. Clarke also tallied three NCAA National Championship appearances in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Petra Mauritzon, a two-time MAC champion in the 500 Freestyle and a one-time winner of the 200 Freestyle, was named the league s outstanding senior after the 1997-98 season. Mauritzon graduated with five school records and still holds the marks to this day. Seibold-Caudill tutored Joy Gallagher, who became the first freshman in BSU annals to claim a league title with her victory in the 50 freestyle during the 1993-94 season. Gallagher later became the first female in league history to win four-straight MAC titles in a single event, topping the 50 free from 1994-97. Gallagher also won the 100 free for a second straight season and captured her first 200 free title to earn selection as the MAC Swimmer of the Year for a second time as a senior. Gallagher remains the only woman in league history to capture championships in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles during the same season. Gallagher, a two-time All- American, was the nation s No. 1 ranked swimmer in the 50 free during the 1996-97 season. In 1990, with a team dominated by underclassmen, Seibold-Caudill was selected the MAC Coach of the Year after guiding BSU to third place at the league championships -- the highest finish in school history at the time. She also coached three-straight MAC Divers of the Year in the early 90 s -- Eden Zazove (1990-91) and Dawn Ford (1991-92 & 1992-93). In addition, Stacy Mills achieved distinction at the 1993 MAC meet by posting first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly -- the first individual swimming titles in BSU women s swimming history. Brooke Bauer was BSU s first MAC individual champion, earning a three overall titles, sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter events in 1983-84, while taking home the 1-meter title in 1982-83. She was also the program s first MAC Diver of the Year, collecting the award after the 1983-84 season. Seibold-Caudill s teams also stand out academically as evidenced by the combined GPA of 3.30 for last year s women s team and the 3.10 mark for the men s team. The Caudill Family: Front: Karin & Ritchie; Middle: Laura, Bill & Ryan; Back: Aaron Seibold-Caudill has also coached two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, while her women s teams have been chosen as a College Swimming Coaches of America Academic All-America Team every semester since 1993 and the men s squad has earned the honor every semester she has worked with the program. Prior to becoming head coach at BSU, Seibold-Caudill was head diving coach and assistant swimming coach at Virginia. The 1976 Michigan State graduate, Seibold-Caudill was a three-time national finalist in 1-meter and 3-meter diving. She was honored as an All-American for her efforts in 1973, 1974 and 1975. Seibold-Caudill, who won the East-West Diving Championships while at MSU, was invited to participate in the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team Diving Trials. An eight-time U.S. Diving National Qualifier from 1972-76, she also competed in the U.S. Pan American Team Trials and the U.S. World Game Trials in 1975. Seibold-Caudill comes from a long line of swimming successes. Her parents were both swimmers at Michigan State. Her father placed second in the U.S. National Championships and was an NCAA All-American. Her uncle Paul Seibold was an NCAA All-American, while her uncle Dave Seibold was an NCAA All-American and U.S. National Champion. Seibold-Caudill and her husband, Bill, are the parents of four -- Ryan, Aaron, Ritchie and Karin. Her son Ritchie, a 2006 BSU graduate, was a former swimmer for the program and is entering his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the program. Her daughter Karin is a sophomore on the Ball State volleyball team. Co-Head Coach Bob Thomas Co-Head Coach Bob Thomas 30th Season at Ball State Career: 203-149-2 MAC: 92-89-1 Alma Mater: Eastern Illinois, 1974 The winningest coach in the 62-year history of Ball State men s swimming & diving, Bob Thomas enters his fifth season as co-head coach of the Ball State swimming & diving program and his 30th season overall at BSU, after serving as the men s swimming & diving head coach for 25 years. A four-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year (1992-93, 1994-95, 1999-00 & 2002-03), Thomas has accumulated a 203-149-2 (.573) career record, including a 92-89-1 (.505) league ledger. He has helped guided the Ball State men s squad to a pair of runner-up finishes at the MAC Championships (1992-93 & 2002-03), while guiding the team to a top three finish eight times. Over his career, Thomas has coached his student-athletes to MAC individual championships a total of 40 times, while helping guide his relay teams to seven titles. His student-athletes have earned First Team All-MAC honors eight times, while collecting Second Team All-MAC accolades on 16 occasions. He has also coached his athletes to four All-America honors, eight MAC Diver of Year awards, four MAC Outstanding Senior awards and a MAC Swimmer of the Year honor. On the women s side, Thomas helped guide Sarah Welter to the 100 backstroke title at the 2004-05 MAC Championships. Welter also swam the first leg of the 200 Medley Relay which captured the event title the same year with a school-record clocking of 1:45.04. Joining Welter in the relay were Tara Zimmer, Erin Johnson and Karla Bailey. In 2002-03, Thomas picked up his fourth MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award by leading Ball State to an 11-3 dual-meet record and a second-place finish at the MAC Championships despite having just two seniors on the roster. The Cardinals had finished sixth at the league-event the year before, giving Thomas the best turnaround in the MAC for the 2002-03 season. Thomas collected his third MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award after the 1999-2000 campaign, as the Cardinals turned in another solid improvement from the previous season, climbing from eighth to fifth at the league meet. The team also posted a 7-5 duel-meet record, while going 5-2 in conference action. From the 1995-96 to 1997-98 seasons, Thomas helped coach the program s latest MAC Diving Champion, as Dave Garrow collected three individual titles on the 1-meter board and a pair of championships on the 3-meter board. A two-time MAC Diver of the Year, Garrow ranks second in the BSU record books in all diving categories. The 1994-95 season not only saw Thomas pick up his second MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award, it added two individual MAC titles, two MAC relay championships, a 9-3 dual-meet record, a 4-1 MAC ledger and a third-place finish at the league s championship meet. Both John Goheen (3-meter diving) and Magnus Ohlsson (500 freestyle) won their second-striaght MAC individual event titles during the season, while Goheen collected his second-striaght MAC Diver of the Year award. While BSU s diving dominance began during the 1990-91 season, it reach unprecedented levels in 1993-94, when Dave Keener, a three-time All-American for the Cardinals, and Goheen split the MAC Diver of the Year award. Keener, who was a fivetime MAC diving champion and the two-time defending MAC Diver of the Year entering the season, finished first on the 1-meter board, while Goheen captured his first MAC diving title in the 3-meter event. The 1992-93 campaign still goes down as one of the best for Thomas. Not only did he capture his first MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award, but he also guided the program to its first second-place finish at the MAC Championships and a 7-3 (4-1 MAC) record. Mike Gallagher (50 Freestyle) and Keener (1-Meter & 3-Meter Diving) helped pave the way by combining for three MAC individual titles, while BSU also collected a pair of relay championships, with Gallagher anchoring both. During the 1989-90 season, Thomas coached Thomas Doyle (100 & 200 Backstroke) and Brian Kennedy (1-Meter & 3-Meter Diving) to a pair of MAC titles each, while leading Craig Patnode to the MAC Outstanding Senior award in 1990-91. From 1984-1989, Thomas coached the most prolific champion in program history in Winand Willigers. A four-time MAC Champion in the 200 IM, Willigers also captured a pair of titles in the 100 and 200 Freestyle, while earning the program s only MAC Outstanding Swimmer award to go along with MAC Outstanding Senior accolades. Thomas helped Jeff Grabman collect the program s first MAC Outstanding Senior award after the 1986-87 season, while tutoring him to MAC titles in the 50 and 100 The Thomas Family: Abby, Susan, Bob and Lisa Freestyle the previous season. John Atkins was Thomas first MAC individual champion, earning the 200 Breaststroke title in 1984-85. His teams have also excelled in the classroom as evidenced by the fact that BSU has been chosen as a College Swimming Coaches of America Academic All-America Team in all but one semester he has coached, while the women s squad has picked up the award each semester he has helped coach the program. In 1994, Keener was named to the CSCA Academic All-America First Team and the CoSIDA Academic At-Large All-District V Team. Andy Tharp was the program s first CoSIDA Academic All-America, earning second team honors in 1983-84. Thomas, an active, competitive swimmer himself, does not limit his success to coaching. In April 2001, he set two national records as a member of the Indy SwimFit team - 50 Backstroke (26.62) and 200 Freestyle Relay (1:43.25) for men ages 45-49. Thomas came to BSU from Lincoln College, where he coached the school to fifthand 16th-place national finishes and directed the school s aquatics program for three years. Prior to that, he was the head coach for one season at Evergreen Park Community High School in Evergreen Park, Ill. He earned his bachelor s degree in 1974 and his master s degree in physical education in 1975 from Eastern Illinois University. As an undergraduate, Thomas won 14 national championships -- seven NAIA national titles in 1971 and 1972 and seven NCAA Division II titles in 1973 and 1974. During the summer of 2002, his alma mater bestowed its highest athletic honor on him when it inducted Thomas into its Athletic Hall of Fame -- making him one of just two swimmers in the school s history to receive such recognition. Thomas is a member of an outstanding swimming family. His mother, the former Helen Perry, set a national 100 backstroke record and qualified for the 1940 Olympics. Support Staff & Administration Kristy Clarke Graduate Assistant Coach Second Season at Ball State Alma Mater: Clarion, 2007 Nine-time All-American Kristy Clarke enters her second season as the graduate assistant coach for the Ball State swimming and diving program. A 2007 graduate from Clarion University, Clarke was a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Eagles from 2003-04 to 2006-07. As a member of the squad, Clarke was instrumental in guiding the program to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in her freshman and junior campaigns. Over her career, Clarion posted a 33-16 dual-meet record. On the national scene, Clarke helped guide Clarion to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA D-II Nationals as a senior, while the team placed 11th her junior season, 10th her sophomore campaign and fifth her freshman year. Clarke was a freestyle specialist for Clarion, while also participating in relay events. During her collegiate career, Clarke posted personal best times of 24.6 in the 50 freestyle, 53.5 in the 100 freestyle and 1:55.3 in the 200 freestyle. Clarke s work experience includes helping run summer camps at Clarion University, numerous job positions as a lifeguard and working for the Red Cross as a swim instructor. Clarke, who graduated from Clarion with a bachelors degree in biology, is currently pursuing a masters degree in dietetics at Ball State. She is engaged to Mark Trumbo, with a wedding date set for the summer of 2009 in Hermitage, Pa. Swimming & Diving Support Staff Tom Collins - Director of Athletics Ball State University selected Tom Collins as its director of intercollegiate athletics Jan. 9, 2006. In his tenure at Ball State, Collins has directed the completion of the Scheumann Stadium renovation, put in place a new five-year gender equity plan and served as a significant member of the university s senior staff. It is clear at Ball State the administration has staked out a commitment to the true scholar-athlete model of intercollegiate athletics, Collins says. Couple that with the university s and the community s commitment to providing the student-athletes with outstanding facilities and a supportive atmosphere, and it becomes clear why Ball State has a proud academic and athletic tradition. Collins heads up a Ball State 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program with a rich tradition in academic and athletic success. Last year s football team made an appearance in the International Bowl, which was the school s first bowl berth since 1996, and capped off a 7-6 season, the best record for a Ball State team since the 1996 campaign. The baseball team won the 2006 Mid-American Conference Tournament and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1969. The women s soccer team won its first-ever MAC Regular-Season Championship in 2006 and repeated the feat in 2007. The women s basketball team advance to the 2006 WNIT and hosted Kentucky in a first-round game. Academically, Ball State student-athletes in all 19 of the school s intercollegiate athletic programs graded out better than the necessary 925 in the latest NCAA Division I Academic Progress Report, and 14 of the programs exceeded the national average for all NCAA Division I schools. Ball State was one of only four MAC schools, and the only NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision public institution in Indiana, which did not have a program record a score below 925. We are very pleased with the APR Report, Collins says. Our coaches, staff and support services do an outstanding job of making sure our student-athletes are getting an education, while growing socially and as student-athletes. In addition, Collins sits on the MAC s Finance Committee, was appointed to the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and serves as the baseball coaches liaison to the conference office. Collins resume includes working for some of the most recognizable names in intercollegiate athletics. While at Arizona State, he worked with athletic directors Dick Tamburo, Kevin White (currently the A.D. at Duke) and Gene Smith (currently the A.D. at Ohio State). Collins also worked with athletic director Sam Jankovich, while at the University of Miami, and his colleagues through the years include current A.D. s Jim Livengood (Arizona), Michael Alden (Missouri), Sandy Hatfield Clubb (Drake) and Vic Cegles (Long Beach State). The first female national champion in any sport in the history of Ball State athletics and one of only a small number in school history, Bergman set national records in the 100-yard backstroke and 100- yard individual medley. She helped Ball State to a ninth-place finish at the 1971 National Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships as the Cardinals placed ahead of Syracuse, Indiana, UCLA, Miami (Fla.), Utah, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Washington State and several other schools. At the 1971 meet, Bergman won the national title in the 100 IM (1:03.2), with a time just behind her national championship clocking of 1:03.0 set in 1970. She won the national title in 1970 in the 100 back (1:02.3) and finished second in 1971 (1:03.0). At the 1971 national meet, Bergman also placed fourth in the 50 back (29.6), plus helped the Cardinals to a seventhplace finish in the 200 medley relay.
