The Thunderbirds were able to pull away at the end of the game for the tenpoint victory. Several new Thunderbirds turned in impressive performances in their Southern Utah debut including freshman guard Hailey Mandelko who led the team with 20 points on 6-12 shooting and also handed out three assists. Freshman center Brenna Gates provided a spark off the bench for SUU recording a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds in just 17 minutes of play. The T-Birds outrebounded the Red Storm 50-39 and made 38 trips to the free throw line in the game. Dixie State senior guard Sheila Adams led all scorers with 21 points in the contest. THUNDERBIRDS ADD TWO NEW ASSISTANTS TO COACHING STAFF Southern Utah University has announced the hiring of assistant coaches Nicole Ryan and Caitlyn Sears who will join T-Birds women s basketball team. Nicole Ryan comes to Southern Utah from American University where after a successful playing career, spent a year as a student assistant. Ryan was a standout guard at American where she helped lead the Eagles to three consecutive NIT appearances and one regular season championship in the Patriot League. Caitlyn Sears continues to be an important contributor to T-Bird basketball as she makes the transition from player to coach. This past season Sears concluded one of the most productive playing careers in the history of SUU basketball, becoming Southern Utah s fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,216 total points. Thunderbirds Accept Invitation To Join Big Sky Conference Southern Utah University s athletic program will have a new home, beginning in the fall of 2012, as the Thunderbirds have accepted an invitation to join the Big Sky Conference. SUU received and accepted a formal invitation to join the conference on Friday. The University of North Dakota also accepted an invitation from the Big Sky on Friday and will be announcing its intent to join the conference today. Southern Utah will reap many benefits as members of the Big Sky, including reduced travel costs, ease of scheduling and, at least in the case of football, the opportunity to play for an automatic post-season bid. Last, but certainly not least, SUU s programs will be able to build on natural regional rivalries within the conference rather than with institutions with no geographic ties to Utah. The Thunderbirds currently compete in The Summit League in the majority of their sports, with the closest conference opponent located in Tulsa, Okla. With the exception of North Dakota, every school in the Big Sky will be closer geographically to SUU than the nearest Summit League institution. That translates into savings in the travel budgets of all sports as well as regional name recognition for the conference rivals. OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS no. Avg/G 1. PYLE, Jordan-ORU 114 3.5 2. None Head Coach JR Payne JR Payne begins her third season at the helm of the Thunderbirds after being named the ninth women s basketball head coach at Southern Utah University on April 20, 2009. She has led the T-Birds to a combined record of 23-37 in her first two years at SUU. The Thunderbirds finished the 2010-11 season with a record of 16-14, the team s best mark in the past seven years. The 2011 squad also had one of their best seasons as a member of the Summit League, posting a 10-8 record to finish fifth in the conference. Under Payne s guidance in this past season, forward Challis Pascucci produced one of best seasons in SUU history, earning a spot on the All-Summit League first team after finishing third in the conference in scoring (17.7 PPG), second in rebounding (9.7 RPG) and sixth in blocks (23). Pascucci finished the 2011 season as the Thunderbirds all-time leader in career rebounds (929) and fourth in scoring (1,328). Caitlyn Sears was also recognized as a member of the All-Summit League second team, and freshman Desiree Jackson was named to the All-Newcomer team. Following the season, Payne had eight of her players earn Summit League All-Academic honors, one of the highest team totals in the conference. Prior to coming to SUU, Payne served as the top assistant at Santa Clara University under first-year head coach Jennifer Mountain for the 2008-09 season. Payne also served as an assistant coach at Boise State University and Gonzaga University. During her time in Boise, the Broncos enjoyed a wealth of success, winning conference titles two of the three years and advancing to the NCAA postseason. BSU posted back-to-back 24-8 seasons, including a perfect 14-0 mark at home during the 2007-08 season. Payne began her career at Gonzaga University, serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Kelly Graves. Payne was an integral part of the Bulldogs turnaround as the team posted a five-win season during the staff s first year then went to a 28-win season during the 2004-05 season, including an undefeated run in the West Coast Conference. Payne was a part of the process that brought Gonzaga s first All-American to campus in guard Shannon Mathews. As a player, Payne was a four-year letter winner at St. Mary s College (Calif.), helping the Gaels earn their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in school-history during the 1998-99 season. The former point guard was an All-West Coast Conference first team selection and was also named to the West Coast Conference All-Tournament first team twice.
