W, 34-18 *Liberty League game, #ECAC North Atlantic Bowl SERIES SNAPSHOT: This afternoon s game marks the first meeting between the Statesmen and the Profs of Rowan University. AGAINST THE NJAC: Hobart has precious little experience against teams from the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Statesmen have faced only one of the seven member schools, SUNY Cortland. Hobart is 6-6 against the Red Dragons, but the two programs have not squared off since 1989. This season, Cortland lost at Rowan 34-33. THREE-TIME DEFENDING CHAMPS: Hobart secured its third consecutive Liberty League Championship and fifth since the league was founded in 1995 with a perfect 7-0 run through the conference. TOURNAMENT TIME: Hobart is making its third NCAA Tournament appearance (2000, 2002, 2004). The Statesmen are 2-2 in the NCAA Playoffs, defeating Bridgewater State 25-0 in the first round in 2000, before falling at Widener 40-14. In 2002, Hobart lost in the first round to John Carroll 27-7. Last week, the Statesmen opened their third NCAA excursion with a 35-16 win over Curry. POLL POSITION: Hobart moved up from No. 22 to No. 19 in the final regular season AFCA coaches poll. The Statesmen also debuted at No. 23 in the D3football.com poll, which is voted on by a national panel of coaches, sports information directors and media members. COLONELS DEMOTED: The Statesmen advanced to this afternoon s regional semifinal with a 35-16 win over the Curry Colonels on Hobart s Boswell Field. The Statesmen defense limited Curry s 23rd-ranked rushing offense to just 65 yards on the ground, including minus 3 yards in the first half. Offensively, senior running back JACK HOLLERAN rushed for a game-high 151 yards, including a Hobart postseason record 76-yard touchdown. ABOUT FACE: The Colonels came into last Saturday s game leading the nation in turnover margin (+2.3/g), but left on the losing side of four turnovers (2 fumbles, 2 interceptions). PROLIFERATION: Curry came into last Saturday s game ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 8.1 points per game. The Statesmen scored more than four times that. In fact, Hobart s 35 points was more than the Colonels had allowed to any two opponents combined. TWO-MAN DELIGATION: With the Statesmen s win over Curry, Head Coach MIKE CRAGG joined Hobart Hall of Famer EDDIE TRYON atop the school s all-time wins list. Cragg s record stands at 64-34 (.653), while Tryon led the Statesmen to a 64-54 (.540) record from 1946 through 1962. SENIOR DAY REVISITED: On Senior Day at Boswell Field on Nov. 13, six different members of the Hobart Class of 2005 scored to lead the Statesmen to a 41-20 victory over the University of Rochester. RICK PIÑERO struck first on a 55-yard reception in the first quarter, that was followed by an ERIC AMPUJA extra point. In the third quarter, MARCUS ERIKSSON caught his first collegiate touchdown. Three minutes later, TY GODINHO scored on a 3- yard run. Just eight seconds after that, CHRIS PURTELL recorded a safety that set up a drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown reception by DAN SUOZZI.

Hobart is second in turnover margin (+1.8/g), 15th in rushing defense (89.6 yds/g), 29th in scoring offense (35.0 ppg), and 33rd in total offense (420.7 yds/g). LIBERTY LEADERS: Hobart ranks first in the Liberty League in scoring offense (35.0 ppg), scoring defense (17.7 ppg), turnover margin (+1.8/g), rushing offense (211.4 yds/g), rushing defense (89.6 yds/g), total offense (402.7 yds/g), pass efficiency (159.6), pass efficiency defense (98.5), first downs (199), fourth down conversions (54.5 percent), red zone offense (88.1 percent), red zone defense (53.3 percent), PAT kicking (97.6 percent), and time of possession (33:57). SCORING BINGE: With 350 points through 10 games, the 2004 Statesmen have obliterated the Hobart record for points in a season, formerly 311 in 10 games in 1997. This year s squad has also eclipsed the 1997 team s record for touchdowns in a season with 48 vs. 43. NIFTY FIFTY: By scoring 54 points at Rensselaer and 55 the following week against WPI, this year s squad became the first Hobart team to score 50-plus points in back-to-back games. In fact, prior to this season, the Statesmen hadn t scored 50-plus points in consecutive seasons since 1955 (53-0 vs. Kenyon) and 1956 (54-0 vs. St. Lawrence). THIN RED LINE: Hobart has moved with relative ease through the red zone. The Statesmen scored on their first 25 trips inside the red zone this season and are 37-of-42 overall. Hobart has rushed for 14 TDs, thrown for 17 more, and kicked six field goals. THE RED MILE: On the flip side, the Hobart defense has been tough to score against in the red zone. The Statesmen have stopped a Liberty League best 53.3 percent of opponents trips inside the 20-yard line. MIKE CRAGG s defense has taken over on downs seven times, produced five interceptions, recovered a fumble, watched two field goals miss the mark, and blocked a third three-point attempt. ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: At 9-1, Hobart has secured its eighth consecutive winning season, matching the program record established by Head Coach VINCENT WELCH s teams between 1921 and 1928. RIVERBOAT GAMBLER: Head Coach MIKE CRAGG is fast developing a reputation as a gutsy play-caller. His Statesmen lead the Liberty League in fourth down conversions (18), fourth down attempts (33), and fourth down success rate (54.5). No other team in the league has converted more than 43 percent. ALL IN: Speaking of gutsy calls, CRAGG faced fourth and 10 from the Hobart one midway through the fourth quarter of the Union game. Nonetheless, he asked punter DAN SUOZZI to run a fake punt, which he did, gaining 14 yards and a first down. The 16-play, 87-yard drive ended in a game-tying field goal that forced overtime. LIBERTY LEAGUE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Senior defensive end CHRIS PURTELL, was voted the 2004 Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year by the league s coaches. One of four team captains, he leads the team (7th in the conference) in tackles with 71 (36 solo). He also paces the Statesmen with 14.5 tackles for a loss, including 4.5 sacks. Purtell has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week three times this season. ALL-LIBERTY LEAGUE: Hobart had 17 players voted All-Liberty League by the conference s coaches. ERIC AMPUJA, ALEX BELL, WALT BENNETT, JEFF BRUCKMAN, DAN SUOZZI, JAMIE ANDERSON, TONY CLEMENTE, and SHAWN MIZRO joined Defensive Player of the Year CHRIS PURTELL on the first-team. JACK HOLLERAN, RICK PIÑERO, and DYSHAWN WASHINGTON earned second-team honors. TY GODINHO, JIMMY GRADIS, NOLAN ROBINSON, JEFF SANDERS, and DAN SUOZZI received honorable mention. DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN: Senior wide receiver, punter, and return man DAN SUOZZI has been named to the All-Liberty League teams nine times, three times at each position.

Through 10 games, seniors ALEX BELL, JEFF BRUCKMAN, MATT MONTROY, and JOSH VAN AUKEN, and sophomore MIKE DEPERSIS have allowed just 17 sacks. That s 26 fewer than at the same point last season. CENTURY MARK: Senior running back TY GODINHO has posted 20 100-yard rushing games during his four-year career, including a 107-yard effort against John Caroll in the 2002 NCAA Playoffs. The Hobart career record for 100-yard rushing games is 23 set by RICH KOWALSKI 76. Godinho also holds the Hobart record for most rushing yards in a postseason game, racking up 203 yards and MVP honors in the 2003 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl. POINTS LEADERS: Senior wide receiver DAN SUOZZI leads the Liberty League in scoring, at 8.4 points per game. Senior place kicker ERIC AMPUJA ranks first among Liberty League kickers with 5.8 ppg. ONE-TWO COMBO: Senior running backs JACK HOLLERAN and TY GODINHO are second and fourth, respectively, in the conference in rushing yards. The tandem has combined for 1,846 yards (5.3 yds/att) and 12 touchdowns. CATCH OF THE DAY: Senior wide receiver DAN SUOZZI is firmly entrenched in the Hobart records book. The native of New Canaan, Conn., holds Hobart career records with 176 receptions for 2,781 yards and 26 touchdowns. 14 AND COUNTING: DAN SUOZZI broke the Hobart single season touchdown receptions record in just six games, eclipsing the mark of nine SCOTT GEISE 83 established in nine games back in 1982. Suozzi has hauled in 14 TD receptions so far this season. BROKEN RECORD: With five TD passes against Union, sophomore quarterback SHAWN MIZRO broke the Hobart single game and single season touchdown passes records, tossing his 23rd of the year to beat the Dutchmen in overtime. Current quarterbacks coach CRAIG SWANSON 04 established the old standard of 22 in 2002. Mizro boasts 29 scoring tosses in 10 games. MODEL OF EFFICIENCY: SHAWN MIZRO is the highest ranked underclassman in pass efficiency rating in Division III. Despite throwing just two passes as a first-year, the native of Newark, N.Y., has excelled in his first season as a starter, completing 140-of-248 for 2,044 yards and 29 touchdowns against just six interceptions for a passer rating of 159.43. He leads the Liberty League and ranks eighth in the nation. DEFENSIVE MIZ-ERY: Speaking of MIZRO, he s on pace to eclipse several of Hobart s single season passing marks. His current numbers for passing TDs per game (2.9), passing yards per attempt (8.2), and pass efficiency rating (159.4) all project out to new Hobart records. TOP PICK: Junior corner back JAMIE ANDERSON leads the Liberty League in interceptions. The Canandaigua, N.Y., native has six picks this season, including a crucial fourth-quarter grab that set up Hobart s game-tying drive against Union. For his career, he has 11 interceptions. SECRETARY OF DEFENSE: Junior corner back DYSHAWN WASHINGTON leads the Liberty League and ranks 22nd in the nation in passes defended (1.5/g). THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: Against Rochester, senior kicker ERIC AMPUJA tied the Hobart career field goals made record established by SHAWN FAZIO 81 (19). Ampuja s 85.7 percent success rate this season (6-of-7) would break the current Hobart record set by MATT EDWARDS 96 in 1992 (.800, 4-of-5). JUST FOR KICKS: ERIC AMPUJA already owns the Hobart career records for PATs made and points by a kicker. He broke the PAT record in 2002 at F&M and currently boasts 121.
