EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT July 2015 Friday 24 th Store Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 livestock@kivells.com www.kivells.com

323 STORE CATTLE & STIRKS 10AM Auctioneers: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Alan Webber 07967 718048 Steers to 1345 Heifers to 1150 Trade continued at the very high levels of late for both store and finished cattle with regular and new buyers in attendance. Vendors should seriously consider selling now and take advantage of the buoyant trade rather than wait to the autumn when prices may well ease. A tremendous 24 month British Blue steer the property of Paul Hendy of Kingsbridge reached the top price on the day of 1345. Younger Blues from the same South Devon farm to 1175 and 20 month Friesian bullocks to 965. An entry of twenty four forward cattle from Derek Pyle of Clyst Honiton all around 2 years old saw Blonde steers to 1290, Blue steers to 1225 and Simmentals to 1090, with Blue heifers from the same consignor to 1045. A further entry of twelve cattle again 2 years old from Cyril Emmett of Aylesbeare sold well with Blue steers to 1285, others 1230 and 1190. Charolais steers to 1215, Simmental steers to 1140 and an exceptional meat heifer of the same breed to 1150. A consignment of twenty two good strong stores from Lynden Downs of Christow saw 21 month Blue steers to 1100 and heifers to 1000 while Angus heifers sold to 845. Other prices achieved and worthy of note saw 22 month Angus steers to 1220 for Neil & Kate Lethbridge of East Allington. The same aged Blues to 1245 for a well fed matching group of four from John & Jenny Squire of South Tawton. 26 month Simmental bullocks to 1200 for Charles & Ann Down of Abbotskerswell, 28 month Shorthorn heifers to 1035 for RD Hickman of Ashburton, 25 month Simmental heifers for Neil & Kate Lethbridge and 15 month Limousin heifers to 900 for Quinney Spears of Moretonhampstead. Angus cows with single suckled heifer calves at foot to 1180 and 1160 for EWH Hendy & Partners of Plymouth. Younger cattle still a very strong trade with no shortage of prospective buyers in attendance. Most expensive of the day came from Ian Pincombe of Kennerleigh as all looked on in amazement as a bunch of three Charolais steers at just 3 months of age sold for 615 a head, there was further disbelief when they were followed by a trio of heifers of the same breed and age which were knocked down for 620 each. Older steers saw a high of 920 for well grown young suckler bred Limousin s from Michael Weeks of Kennford whilst heifers with the same comments from Michael rose to 710 for a pair. More quality beef bred calves from Phil Hutchings of Chagford saw a cracking 9 month old Charolais steer sell at 895 and a pair of pedigree sired Angus bullocks at 8 months reach 715. Other Angus steers at 11 months sold to 820 for Brian Warne of Manaton whilst a bunch of seven from Paul Stoneman of Newton Abbot topped 750 apiece. 8 month old Charolais steers made to 755 for Rob & Christine Steer of Avonwick with Simmentals from Keith & Shirley Wotton of Dartmouth and Colin Slade from Widecombe in the Moor reaching 750 and 685 respectively. 11 month old Angus heifers ran to 650 for Brian Warne with younger 9 month old South Devon females from Dave & Shirley Mudge of Princetown topping 650. Simmental females from Colin Slade hit a high of 635 for three. Another useful entry although not quite the quality Show forward as of last week, sold to another cracking trade! Top of the day was 432 for a British Blue bull from Anthony & Gill Bond of Honiton who sold others at 415. Other medium Blue bulls sold well to 340 for Roger & Sam Parris of Stockland. Limouisn bulls sold to 368 & 350 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of Axminster. Native bulls sold to 335 for an Aberdeen Angus bull from Anthony & Gill Bond. Hereford bulls to 285 for Richard Shere of Hemyock. Heifers were again a flying trade and in strong demand for all grades topping at 405 for a super young Charolais from David Headon of North Tawton who also sold a British Blue heifer at 370. Other Charolais sold to 385 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford and British Blues to 390 & 375 for Anthony & Gill Bond and 382 for Michael Pyle of Broadhembury. Limousin heifers sold to 380 & 350 for Kathryn Starr of 68 STIRKS & SUCKLED CALVES 11.30AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 98 CALVES - 10.15AM Auctioneer: Mark Davis 07773 371774 CALVES - 10.15 am Auctioneer: Mark Davis 07773371774 CALVES Bulls Heifers Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE British Blue 8 432 307 10 390 306 Simmental 1 245 245 Charolais 1 320 320 2 405 395 Limousin 7 368 274 5 380 283 Hereford 2 285 243 2 275 237 Devon 2 230 211 Aberdeen Angus 11 335 232 2 220 192 Holstein / Friesian 35 230 68 Ayrshire 1 18 18 Norwegian Red 4 90 76 Dunkeswell. A young Hereford Heifer sold well at 275 for Derek & Claire Burrough of Yarcombe. Friesians a touch easier than of late however the best British Friesians flew to 230 & 190 (three weeks old) for Mark White of Seaton. A good run from Anthony & Gill Bond sold to 142, 122, 112 & 110 with others to 90 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford. Norwegian Red x bulls to 90 for Colin Pople of Aylesbeare.

968 SHEEP - 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 911 STORE LAMB Another decent sized entry of over 900 lambs were not the overall quality of last week and trade was variable with small sorts looking very dear while short term lambs were back slightly. Best on the day was 62 & 58.50 for Mark Kimber of Merton, both Francis Brewer of Silverton & Alan Boorman of Trusham claimed 60, Steve Francis of South Tawton achieved 59.50 and both East Coombe Farm Partners of Stockleigh Pomeroy and Steve Smaridge of Mamhead sold their best at 58.50. Medium lambs generally 53-58 and the smaller end look very well sold in comparison at 46-52. Only the very small, funnily bred or entire rams less than 45, of which there seemed quite a few, meaning the average was back almost 2 to level at 52.57 (- 1.97). 57 GRAZING EWES, HOGGS & RAMS A pair of rams from Francis Brewer sold at 94 & 85 and two pens of decent ewes sold at 76 & 68 for Laura Vallis of Bradninch, others to 54 for D Boyles of South Molton and lean Romney grazers to 47.50 delighting vendor Sam Bullingham of Okehampton. 2 nd ANNUAL RARE BREEDS SALE of Cattle, Sheep, Goats & Pigs to include 5 TH ANNUAL SALE OF PEDIGREE DEXTER CATTLE and GREYFACE DARTMOOR SHEEP BREEDERS ASSOCIATION Entries for cataloguing close Friday 31 st July Further information and entry forms - 01392 251261 / livestock@kivells.com or Mark Davis 07773 371774
