RAAKSKOOT / TOUCHER AUGUST 2017

RAAKSKOOT / TOUCHER AUGUST 2017 V A T G R A S Pieter Linde SCORING IN ROUND ROBIN GAMES A Real Mouthful The Conditions of Play for certain Boland competitions played on a round robin basis stipulate that 2 points be awarded for a win, 1 point for a peel, etc. If after the final round two teams/players have the same points, the winner shall be the team/player with the highest net score, and if still equal, the highest shot percentage will apply. SOMETHING TO CHEW ON!! What happens in the unlikely, but still possible, event, that the score of two teams/players should still be equal? If this is the case, then the winner of the game between the two parties will be the deciding factor and if still equal then a tie-breaker must be played. This sequence is set out in the Conditions of Play at the Inter-District Championship. Thus, to cover for all eventualities, it is recommended that the following wording be used in the Conditions of Play of all tournaments and championships played in the Boland: The winner shall be the team/player with the most points and if a tie, the following sequential criteria will be used until a winner is determined: (1) Net shots; (2) Shot percentage (i.e. shots for, divided by shots against (Law 27.4) (3) The winner of the game when the two parties played each other (4) If still a tie, one tie -breaker will be played. - 7 -

RAAKSKOOT / TOUCHER AUGUST 2017 BOLAND AGM 2017 Mark Beviss-Challinor On 29 July the 2017 AGM of Boland Bowls was held at Worcester Bowling Club. Thanks must go to Lorna Viljoen and her team for the use of their facilities and the efficiency with wich everything was arranged. The meeting was well attended by club delegates and guests of honour, including Trevor Davis, Executive Member of Bowls SA. Boland has 1358 members which is, unfortunately, 18 down from last year. This is truly disappointing, especially as Boland spent R15 000 on Members and Marketing toolkits which were given to every club in an attempt to boost numbers. With the exception of two resignations - Henry Fourie, and Joggie Snyman - the Boland executive remains the same for 2018. Henry Fourie has served on the executive for many years and his calm wisdom will be sorely missed. Rosa Cloete from Hermanus is replacing Henry as Overberg President Joggie, as Boland Treasurer for three years, has kept a firm control on the finances. As yet there is no replacement for Joggie. The financial report made mention of a small profit of R19 000, due largely to a handsome con-tribution of R62 000 by the Western Cape Department of Sport. Boland affiliation fees will be raised by R10 to R170 and BSA to R215, thus totalling R385 annual affiliation fees per member. Boland President, Stoffel Lambrechts gave a concise annual report and highlighted the following: the fantastic results achieved at the Interdistricts, notably Gold won by the Men B side. the exciting possibility of Boland hosting the 2019 All Cape. Should this come to fruition it will be a major coup for the district and to the benefit of all the Boland clubs. A proposal to replace the existing Boland Fives competition with a Boland League, was approved by the meeting. The Prize Giving concluded the meeting during which a standing ovation was given to Dave Buckley who was awarded Honorary Life Membership by Boland in recognition of especially his outstanding performance as an Inter-district player from 1997 up to 2017. After the meeting the attendees enjoyed delicious soup and tasted cheese rolls prepared by Theuns Coetzee. Honorary Life Membership to Dave Buckley Men s 2017 Novice Champion - Edwil Adonis

COACHING CORNER Fundamental Training RAAKSKOOT / TOUCHER AUGUST 2017 Con Dixie NSCC Liaison Member for Boland Are you a Roller.. or are you a Contender? Think carefully when you answer the following questions: Do you KNOW that you set up and deliver your bowls the SAME way EVERY time? [delivery routine] Do you easily exclude distractions to really FOCUS on the task at hand? [mental strength] Are you skills growing in leaps and bounds; performing better in the games you play, whether tabs-in or competition? [measure] If you answered NO to any (or all) of the above, here are some tips to build the foundation of your game & hopefully get that performance-return on your effort and time-investment namely : your delivery-routine applied in goal-oriented skills training. Everyone has a great day once in a while, average days and sometimes awful days which are the most exhausting of all! How can you be sure to have better than average days most of the time, with a high % of great days? To start with, you need to have an effective, consistent delivery routine. It is no good trying to be precise with your bowls, if you don t have a precise delivery action AND delivery-mind. A basic routine for you to adapt to make your own, starting behind the mat, knowing what shot you are going to play, could be: 1. Pick up bowl, check bias, deliberately take grip the same way every time, [focus starts narrowing]. 2. [see the line] Standing on the delivery-line, about ½m behind the mat, take a small step with your Stepping Foot onto the middle of the mat with your Anchor Foot heel on the centreline [walk the line]. It is the Anchor Foot that provides your direction forward, NOT the Stepping Foot. 3. Visualise what you want your bowl to do at the head, follow its path back down the delivery-line and back up again to the point-of-aim (PoA), level with the jack [concentration narrows to one point of focus]. 4. Take stance and STOP THINKING, keeping eyes focused on PoA remember to maintain deliberate, relaxed abdominal breathing to keep body relaxed. 5. Deliver the bowl [play the line] with good rhythm and timing flow: swing-then-step-then-point 6. Maintain the follow-through, checking that the bowl did indeed travel down the required delivery line, stand up on the Stepping Foot and watch your bowl to gather data [whether the result is good or bad, information can be banked for later use in the game!] This routine needs to become a habit so that it happens automatically EVERY time, whether you are under pressure or not! Hone this habit (technical, physical & psychological) with the following goaloriented foundational exercises that should be part of every player s practice. Exercise 1: Goals: wake up the rhythm and timing of the body [tech. skills training], the focus-relax routine of the mind and practise remembering what you have done to allow repetition [PST]. Place your mat off the 2m mark [protect the green by using a different spot for the mat when training]. NO jack. Play 4 bowls up and down on the same side of the rink (4 left & 4 right), alternating sides of the green every two ends. 1 st and 2 nd ends: pick any line to play [bowls do not need to end on the centre-line]. Deliberately practise your delivery-routine, with an easy swing, for your 1 st bowl; then deliver the next three on the same line to the same length. Place return mat on centre-line at the length you have just played and do the same thing back [quicker to carry one mat up and down rather than continually put a mat on the bank]. Subsequent ends: change the length ever 2 ends to develop a feel for the green and establish rhythm and memory, 6-10 ends. [Good 15 min. warm-up before games too!!!] (turn to p.11)

RAAKSKOOT / TOUCHER AUGUST 2017 (from p.10) Exercise 2: Goals: consistency of line & length, adjusting length [technical dev.]; hone delivery routine, develop memory [PST].* You need two jacks and one mat (carried up and down). If you are a new player, player four bowls up and down on the same side of the rink; if an experienced player, play two to the left and two to the right each end. At one end, keep the mat at the 2m mark (flip lengthwise every even end to protect the green) every end; place your jack either at the 23m mark (start short working towards long) or 32m mark (start long working towards short). Draw four bowls to jack. Place second jack on 2m mark, carry mat up and place mat-line behind jack; draw back. Before walking back, move your jack 2m (longer or shorter, depending on starting length). Repeat until either the full length or short length is reached takes ±30 minutes. Exercise 3: Goals: consistency of line, adjusting length [technical dev.]; hone delivery routine, develop memory [PST]. You need five jacks and one mat. Play odd ends two bowls left and two right; even ends on alternating sides (i.e. four bowls same side). Odd ends: place jack at randomly different lengths each time, mat at ±2m with three jacks at ±4m, ±6m and ±8m from rear ditch [leave them there during delivery good distraction-management training - PST]. Draw 2 bowls to left and 2 bowls to left to single jack at other end. Even ends: Draw one bowl to each jack, adjusting length and maintain the same line. When you need to adjust during a game, you ll have the confidence to do it! [PST] (Extracts Lawn Bowls Coaching Chapter 8 and App C). * PST = Psychological Skills Training. Players are encouraged to consult their club coaches for help with these exercises. NB: YOU ARE WELCOME TO SEND QUESTIONS AND/OR FEEDBACK TO THE EDITOR (dielindes@telkomsa.net) who will relay them Con Dix. -11-

RAAKSKOOT / TOUCHER AUGUST 2017 LAWN BOWLING SNOWBALL COMPETITION Martin van Zyl We are all bent upon bringing revival into lawn bowls and ensuring that our sport not only remains popular, but actually grows! Our recent history in regard to popularising bowls is perhaps not as great as we doubtless would have it be and, unfortunately, we are constantly reminded that bowls is a sport played by the older generation and that younger persons simply far prefer to be more active and competitive! Without trying to convince those already convinced, let s simply proceed to endeavour to introduce some much needed variance into our sport and, through this, see if we can t assist in protecting, maintaining and, yes, even actually growing the popularity of lawn bowls down here in the Western Cape Province. One of the many suggestions made of late has been the introduction of the Snowball Competition as has been applied at the Hermanus Bowling Club, by far the largest of Boland s 38 affiliated clubs. Ann Miny of Hermanus Bowling Club who had detailed experience of the introduction of this competition in the Western Province, and has been the initiator of it at Hermanus, very kindly forwarded me a copy-set of the particular Conditions of Play. These have been very slightly adjusted and are now attached for the consideration and implementation by other bowling clubs. To say that this format of play has been found to be most successful and indeed also of pecuniary interest to Hermanus Bowling Club and its members, is a total understatement! One should but merely visit the club on a Wednesday afternoon to judge the tremendous success for oneself! On Wednesday 09 August 2017 there were no fewer than 108 participants on all their three greens. Here now, are the Conditions of Play and Ann Miny, as well as the Management of Hermanus Bowling Club, would be more than pleased to answer queries and/or questions that clubs might have. Basic Conditions of Play 1. Background to Competition: The whole idea of a Snowball Bowling Competition is to afford as many bowlers as possible an equal opportunity to win notwithstanding whether their team beats its opposition and/or whether some of the players in a team are inexperienced or champions. 2. Fixed entry fee per team: R 30.00 for a trips team which can of course be adapted should a club rather flag teams of four. Half of the entry fees, goes to the club while the other half goes towards the PRIZE for the team with the winning Snowball score. 3. Entering a team : Players can form their own team and should anyone wanting to play not have or be part of a team, he/she can then enter his/her name on a list prepared and timeously displayed by the Club Competition Secretary on the club notice board. 4. Selection of teams to play against each other : This is the task of the Competition Secretary and must take place beforehand once the number of teams have entered/been determined. Wherever possible, the Competition Secretary should endeavour to ensure that teams, more or less of equal strength, play against each other, that they do not play the same team each week and that rinks on which teams play are varied. This is naturally not all that easy, but the bona fides of the Competition Secretary and whoever assists him/ her must, by and large, be fully accepted by participants. It is imperative that bounce games are not allowed as this could easily form cliques which are strongly discouraged and not in the interest of a Snowball Bowling Competition. 5. Length of each game: 18 ends. 6. Burnt ends: Not to be replayed and jack to be spotted in the middle of the rink on the 2 m mark. (Contd. on page 13) - 12 -

7. Trial ends : None. RAAKSKOOT / TOUCHER AUGUST 2017 (from p.12) 8. Scorecards & Snowball Scores: Scorecards to be handed out to each skip prior to commencement of play and to be filled in after each and every end. Each Skip must retain his/her scorecard at the end of a game to thereafter mark five (5) drawn secret ends (5 end-numbers drawn from a bag) which will then enable him/her to determine the team s total Snowball score for the game just played. The number of shots scored on each of the 5 secret ends must be added together to obtain the final Snowball score for a team. 9. Secret ends : Five numbers from 1-18 must be drawn by five (5) different participants at the end of the day s games. These numbers the reflect the secret ends. (For this purpose we use playing cards which are shuffled and then placed face down.) The totals of all shots scored on the secret ends must be added together to determine the team s Snowball score for the game just played. 10. Ping pong balls : Nineteen (19) such balls are kept in numerical order (0-18) on an egg tray. Once the highest Snowball score for all the games has been determined (refer 9 & 10 above), all 19 ping pong balls will be placed in a bag and a participant will be requested to draw a ball from the bag. The team with the same Snowball number reflected on the ping pong ball drawn, is the winner of the week s Snowball Competition. Up to two (2) teams may win a Snowball Competition Day. The winning money is then divided between the two winning teams. 11. Roll Over & Final MUST BE WON event : If there is no winning team/s or more than two teams have a winning drawn Snowball score, then the prize money is carried over to the next week and so on until a final MUST BE WON Snowball Competition event is held. At such event, the winning Snowball score will receive the prize money. The prize money, if there is more than one drawn Snowball score winner, will then be equally divided between all the winners on the day of the last event. 12. Scorecards: An example of a completed scorecard for Snowball Competitions is as follows (the 5 secret ends as drawn from a bag at the end of the day s play, are in italics and bold; although the team on the right-hand side actually won the game, both teams have an equal chance to win the Snowball depending upon whether their Snowball scores correspond exactly with the number eventually drawn from the bag containing numbers 0-18) : Three bowlers stood at the pearly gates, Their faces were sad and old. They humbly asked the man at the gate, Admission to the fold. "What have you done?", St. Peter said, "To gain admission here". "Selectors sir, we have been For many a weary year". The gates of Heaven flew open wide, As St. Peter pressed the bell. "Come in at once and take a harp, You've had enough of hell!" -13 -
