November Newsletter Sponsored by Hansen Design & Print Ararat Please support our sponsors. The Committee and Staff would like to wish members and their families all the very best for Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year. The golf shop is now fully stocked with balls, tees and gloves Volunteer Position We are seeking a volunteer to look after the clubhouse gardens. Basic plant maintenance and watering required. Please contact Tim if you are interested. Committee News The following items of business were discussed at the November General Committee Meeting: The upgrade to the club power supply has been approved by the Committee. The probable approach is to have a new pole and transformer installed at the south end of the clubhouse. Lloyd Grice was elected Captain for a second year and Phil Roberts is Grounds Chairman also for a second year. Congratulations Lloyd & Phil. The Club Mix - Loyalty Program will be installed and activated over January and February 2015 which will offer excellent rewards and incentives for members. Page 2 Grounds News GROUNDS DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Following several months of discussion at the Committee of Management, the focus of the Grounds Committee has changed. It will become project driven and leave the day-to-day running of the golf course and bowling greens to our Superintendent, Gary Smith. Hence the name change. The GDC comprises Phil Roberts Chairman, Gary Smith, Tim Cronin, Sally Philip and a Bowls Club representative. The first step in the new direction was the survey of members. 54 responses were received of which 47 supported Option 1, the balance Option 2. Option 1 suggested Enhance the existing layout with beautification and remedial works to problem areas. Improve the overall environment and make it a more enjoyable experience.. Many comments were included and these will be given further consideration. Comments included, ladies tees, beautification including water, levelling greens 8, 9 & 18, more tiger tees, improved drainage 3,4,5 & 9, 14 th fairway, fairway bunkers, more and improved green side bunkers, pine tree removal and more concrete paths. The first project will be the re-development of the 8 th, 9 th and 18 th greens. 8 & 9 have been on the to- do list for many years but at Gary s suggestion were postponed while the fairways were planted to Santa Ana couch. We have consulted Neil Cavanagh of Level Tee (www.leveltee.com.au) and he is visiting the Club on 2 nd December for further discussions. There is a considerable amount of planning needed on such a project including costing, budgeting and timing. Neil Cavanagh will take a design and then supervisory role, with most of the work being done by our staff. Over the coming months the committee will identify projects based on your survey responses and based on the Club s ability to fund them, will be formalised into a Plan for the next 5 years and beyond. Soon a concrete path will be laid from the 12 th green to the back of the 13 th & 15 th tees and new hand rails are to be installed on the bridges. The Grounds Development Committee is always willing to receive any ideas or thoughts members may have, based on the above Option 1 criteria. Page 4 Mens Golf News All of a sudden the silly season is upon us and only one Saturday between now and our annual Christmas Turkey and Ham day on Saturday 13 th December. Hurry and get your 4 Person Ambrose teams arranged. So far this year we ve not had a full attendance at any match committee meetings due to various other commitments of members but that hasn t stopped our progress. We ve been able to get through a lot of work thanks to individual efforts from Tim and others. Our biggest achievement I feel has been Chally s entry into the Golf Premier League. First rounds were played last week and we ve got 14 teams entered (9 men s 5 ladies ) which is a fantastic response given the very short time frame we set. Thanks to everyone. You can keep track of your team s progress at www.golfpl.com.au Other achievements thus far have included:- Finalising our programme for 2015 now in final draft and with the printers Shot gun starts will be limited to one per month with 1 pm hit off in summer time. Runners Up trophies in future will be a $15 club voucher which will be credited to the member s account A new match play competition for 32 players to run between August 21 st and September 26 th - full details to be announced in the new year. 2015 Annual Tournament will be from 7 th till 11 th October with similar format to this year s Pennant teams next season will be in Division 3 and Veterans Don t forget it makes no difference where you finish in the field, the important thing is that you ve played and enjoyed. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy and Safe New Year. Happy golfing, Gricey Color printing specialists Photocopying Rubber stamps... made on-site Complete design service

Page 5 Bowls News As the Christmas period nears Chalambar bowls remain competitive in Grampians Bowl Division. Division 1. Has had some close games lately just getting home from Lake Bolac on Nov 15, then losing to Stawell Golf the following week although winning 3 rinks. Div 2 has struggled with numbers and had to forfeit a couple of times hopefully numbers return and we finish 2014 with 2 good wins in both divisions. Last weekend our new singles champion was decided with Roger Young defeating last years winner Shane Todd in a terrific game. A date will soon be arranged for our Christmas BBQ looking forward to seeing every one there. President Peter Dohnt PRESIDENTS DAY AND OPENING DAY 24 bowlers entered and we had a great day with beautiful weather. The day was won by Val Spalding lead, Rose Dohnt third and David Mitchell skip. This was held at Chalambar on Friday,28 th November. 14 teams took part and it was a good fun day and the weather was fine. The winners for the day were Noela Hinchliffe Skip Runners-up: Consolation Prize: Margaret Marshall 3 rd Joyce Wright Lead Mavis Janescke Norma Hair Sue Lyttle Lyn Jacobs Val Tonkin Lorraine Bates Ditch to Ditch was won by Jacki Grimmer and Elaine Mitchell. The main raffle (a $50 Money Tree) was won by Val Tonkin and there were a further 8 draws. The event was sponsored by First National Real Estate Ararat. Brian McCutcheon presented all the prizes after giving a short talk on his involvement and that of the real estate company over many years and also of his involvement with Chalambar Bowls Club.

Page 6 A Message from President Geoff Our AGM in September was well attended with all positions sought after. Secretary Roy withdrew his resignation, after seeing a few hands ready to go up. Consequently the Status Quo remains for another year and we will do our best. We hosted the Wimmera Vets in November and the much needed rain unfortunately arrived that day which affected numbers. Many thanks to Jim for cooking and Brian for selling raffle tickets. Also as usual the staff were a great help. The BBQ is almost completed and really enhances the outdoor deck area. We are in no hurry for the final account. In closing Seasons Greetings to everybody who bothers to read this. Veterans Report With Daryl and Merv in Bunbury (W.A) playing in the Australian Veterans Championship, no locals played in Nhill but five players attended Warracknabeal on October 27, Des Hull, Noel Davidson, John Berg, Phil Hall and Rob Porter with Des only successful winning a ball.
