For a small nation, Singapore has performed outstandingly, outshining advanced countries, such as Australia, Canada, Germany, France, UK and USA. Korea topped the medal standing, with 12 Golds, followed by Switzerland (9 Golds), Taiwan (6 Golds), Austria and Japan (5 Golds each) and Brazil. (4 Golds). 2 With increased global focus on skills education and training for economic and social development of nations, WorldSkills has become a major national agenda for many countries. 3 Unlike her predecessors, 21-year-old Audrey Foo from had a different experience at WorldSkills Leipzig. She is the first competitor of Health & Social Care (formerly known as Caring) after it became a single-member competition area, with different tasks to complete. Despite the change in the competition format, Audrey Foo emerged as the World Champion for Health & Social Care. Singlehandedly, Audrey was able to showcase Singapore s strength in the competition area by displaying high standards of patient care. Singapore has been winning the title since the competition area was introduced in 2007. Audrey is also the winner of the Best of Nation Award, an accolade for a country s best performer(s).

4 Singapore maintained its winning streak in two other competition areas IT Network Systems Administration and Beauty Therapy. All eyes were on Jason Soh, 19, also from, participating in IT Network Systems Administration. This is one of Singapore s strongest skills areas. Jason brings home a Gold Medal for the seventh-time running for Singapore since 2001, when the competition area was introduced. 5 Catherine Boey, 20, from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), also won the second Gold Medal for Singapore in Beauty Therapy. Catherine was a clear-winner with her grace and poise in providing excellent beauty services, such as different types of make-up, massage treatments, manicure and pedicure. This is ITE s second Gold Medal at the WorldSkills Competition since its debut participation in 1995. 6 Two other competitors clinched Silver Medals. Ong Kang Yu, 21, from Republic Polytechnic, got a Silver Medal for Information Network Cabling. Temasek Polytechnic s Tan Wang Leng, 20, also won a Silver Medal for IT Software Solutions for Business. 7 In total, Team Singapore won 3 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals, and 9 Medallions for Excellence over the intense four-day competition.
