Sterling National April 2017 Newsletter Sterling National Management Staff Jeffrey Carroll General Manger Chris Hulme Head Golf Professional Dave Johnson Assistant Golf Professional Tim Gerzabek Golf Course Superintendent Kristen Stebbins Office Account Manager Bill Bergeron Executive Chef Lynette Harris Dining Room Manager Laura Blessington Event Sales Manager From the General Manager s Desk Dear Members, When they say, April showers bring May flowers I do not think they were referring to snow showers!! However, despite this weekend s inclement weather we are forecasted for some relief. We are anticipating having the course opened up as soon as possible and will keep you updated. Historically the course has always drained well therefore we have little concern on that front. The driving range revitalization project last spring is paying dividends as I type. Prior to the weather I personally walked the range and am impressed with how dry and firm the turf was. This time of year, we at the country club, are focused not only on the course but the holidays that are on the horizon. Easter is only a couple of weeks away and Mothers Day follows that by a few short weeks. You can find all of the information on both Easter and Mothers Day on the last couple of pages. Reservations are required for both of these events and both holidays do apply to your monthly food minimums. The 2017 tournament calendar has been passed through the golf committee as well as the board of governors. This will be published on the website as well as in your 2017 Member handbook & Tournament Guide which will be back from press in a few short weeks. As a gentle reminder, the dress code is now in full swing. We promote a relaxed family atmosphere here at Sterling Continued Page 2

Continued From the General Manager s Desk National however we will be enforcing the dress code at all times. The most popular infraction we see this time of year has to do with denim. Denim is not permitted in the dining room from April 1st through December 1st. We also ask that all hats are removed when visiting Sandbaggers and cell phones are turned to silent. If you need to take a call we ask that you remove yourself from the dining area and take the call in the lobby area. If you have any questions regarding attire you may contact Lynette Harris or myself for clarification. The dress code is also available for review on pages 3 and 4 of your member handbooks. Sean and his wife decided to relocate down to Tennessee this offseason. We wish them nothing but the best and appreciate everything that he accomplished while with us. Having said that, I would like to take a minute to introduce you to the newest addition to our management team. Kristen Stebbins joined us in March as our new Office/Account manager. She has been working diligently to continue the fine work that Sean did for us. If you have any questions regarding your account, Kristen can be reached at (978) 422-0275 ext. 300 or via email at kristens@sterlingcc.com. Sincerely, Jeffrey J. Carroll General Manager jeffc@sterlingcc.com Sterling National Would Like to Welcome the Following New Members Mr. Paul Lavallee Auburn, MA Gerald Sorge West Boylston, Mr. & Mrs. Jaime Perry Sterling, MA Ms. Elaine Tower Lancaster, MA Joe Harrington MA Groton, MA Mr. & Mrs. Ted Perry Princteon, MA

Greens Report As I write this it is a beautiful sunny day and the snow is melting quickly, excited to be opening soon. My job is to keep the golf course open as many days as possible and no one wants the golf course open more than I do. The course will open as soon as the snow melts after this snow event. The top priorities are to get the course cleaned-up, accessories out and perform the first mow and roll on the greens. The turf I can see so far, as the course is still 20% covered in snow, looks great! There are no signs of disease or winter kill setting us back. One of the first projects to tackle will be the expansion of the 10th green. Last season we took some initial steps in the expansion process and this year you will see a noticeable difference. To get updates on the daily maintenance, projects and information from around the golf industry you can follow me on Twitter @timgsnccgreens I m looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces on the course soon! Tim Gerzabek Golf Course Superintendent Sterling National Country Club Announces Legacy Membership Qualifications: A qualified candidate must be the child of a current golf member at SNCC. The candidate must be under 30 years of age. ***Dues are locked in for 3 years ***No annual food minimums ***Locker and GHIN included $1995 Annual Dues for Individual Golf $2495 Annual Dues for Family Golf This membership is open to new members only

STERLING NATIONAL NEW MEN S LEAGUE FORMAT The league will consist of two divisions. These divisions will be based off your teams combined indexes. The 14 lowest combined team indexes will form the first division and the second division will consist of the remaining 14 teams. The league will be based off of 56 players (28 teams) so sign up early as possible to secure your spot. The reason for the two separate divisions is to keep the strokes to a minimum in each division and match. You will play 13 matches with the first 7 matches serving as the first half of the league. The second 6 matches will be the second half of the league. These divisions were created so all the teams get to play each other once. The league will be split into a first half and a second half with both halves paying out a 1 st and 2 nd place (pro shop credit). The reason for this, if a team is playing bad in the first half then the chances of winning any prize money was slim.now if you are struggling in one of the halves you can always have a chance to place in the remaining half. We also added two fun play days, one in the middle of the league and one at the end of the league which will serve as the end of the year field day with a great dinner buffet and prizes. These added play days will be treated as a separate one day tournament with pro shop prizes awarded to the top scores for that day. These play day s will have fun and exciting formats. The playoffs will still consist of the top 8 teams, except the top 4 teams in each division will advance to the playoffs. The matches are as follows: 1 vs 4 & 2 vs 3 in each division. There will be a winner in each division and those two teams will play off for the overall champion. There will still be a regular season winner for the board as well, consisting of the two division winner. These teams will be listed as Co Champions. The last addition to the league will be to give some players who already participate and who would like to participate a chance to play from the white tees. By using rule 3-5 allows the players to compete from a separate set of tees and modify the handicaps accordingly. The formula that will be used will be. Handicap + age = 85 or over. The player must declare the set of tees he would like to play from before the league starts. Once the tees are established he must play from that set the entire year. Upcoming tournament sign ups and events Lancaster Cup & Players Cup April 29 th Opening Day ABCD Demo Day May 19 th (3:00 to 7:00) Spring Member Member May 27 & 28 th We are also in the process of finalizing a fun couple s league that will consist of 9 holes on several Sunday afternoons throughout the year. After the details are worked out a posting will be placed in both locker rooms and the golf shop. Thanks to Mrs. Cunningham for working hard to get this league started. Christopher Hulme PGA

SNCC Golf Committee We want to welcome all members to the new season! We will be kicking off the season with our Annual Opening Day ABCD tournament, currently scheduled for April 29 th. This is a great event, especially for new members to have the opportunity to meet other members. The Men s League will start with an Opening Night Play Day on May 10 th. There is a new format for the league this year, which will be explained on the 10 th. The sign-up sheet is posted in the Pro Shop. We have a full tournament schedule throughout the season. The Women s Member-Guest is scheduled for August 5 th. The premier tournament of the year for the men is the Member-Guest in August. This will be a 3-day event, scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday August 10 th - 12 th, with an optional practice round and pairings party on Wednesday the 10 th. The practice round, alternatively, can be played any time prior to Thursday. The Golf Committee and Pro Shop have worked diligently to finalize this year s golf schedule. The handbook is on its way to the printers. There will be a calendar posted in both locker rooms and the Pro Shop. The Golf Committee has an opening for a woman member to provide better representation for our women golfers and a low handicap men s member; please contact us if you are interested. We are looking forward to strong support from the membership for all of our tournaments. Please do not hesitate to contact the Pro Shop for details on the various events. Dick Tashjian Chairman Hello Members, Welcome back! Over the winter months Sterling National Country Club has been working diligently on re establishing an active handicap committee. Members of the committee are: Kevin Flannery, Chairman, Gary Penna, Board of Governors Representative, Dennis Coughlin, Jerry Shanahan, and Bill Shipman. The main objective of this committee is to make all the members aware of what is expected of them when playing a round of golf here at Sterling National, or at any away facility. We don t expect all the members to know every procedure on how, or when, to post your score. So the handicap committee will have its own space designated on the bulletin board in both locker rooms to keep you aware of updates and facts pertaining to the USGA handicap system. As a member, the handicap committee asks only that you: try your hardest on each hole, adjust your score based on the USGA's ESC (Equitable Stroke Control), and post each and every acceptable round of golf. Thanks for your help as we look forward to the 2017 season. Regards, Handicap Committee

Board Of Governors Hello and Welcome Back, Although the year seems to be going by so fast, being March already, it also means it s time for golf. I was hoping that I would be seeing everyone out there on the course by now. Then we got hit with a Spring Storm that s only a minor set back. Tim will have the course ready as soon as he can as usual. If I can t see you on the course before the Masters, then I certainly hope to you in the pub. Ether having a drink or checking out the new menu. Chef has been working hard to get that ready and set to go! We look forward to welcoming all of our new members and I can t wait to see you all out on the golf course soon! As always if there is anything that I can do to help better your experience here at the club, please don t hesitate to let me know! Thank You!
