Negaunee Rod & Gun Club Newsletter Club Websight: negauneerodandgun.com Volume 109, Number 3 Fall 2017 Barn Bucks We d like to give you a chance to help out with the funding for the new Pole Barn. While the loan is out on our new building we will not be able to do too many other projects, so the quicker we can get the it paid off the sooner we can tackle the next things on our list, like new tile in the bar area, nicer tables and chairs and a fresh coat of paint for clubhouse exterior. Any donation towards the building loan would be greatly appreciated. Make checks payable to the Negaunee Rod & Gun Club and tell Jon at the bar that its for the building fund. Thanks! Club Gets Road Abandonment Approved We have successfully petitioned the Marquette County Road Commission for the abandonment of County road JAE, the Rod & Gun Club Road. Most club members probably were unaware that the road off of the North Road into the club parking lot was actually a County Road. The County Road, in fact extended about 75 feet into our parking lot. The reason for our petition for abandonment is simple; it gave us greater flexibility in the siting for our new pole barn building and also now gives us greater access control to our property. Sight In Day Volunteers We need you to step forward and lend a hand for the upcoming Hunter Sight In starting the weekend of November 4-5. All you need is a willingness to help; a knowledge of safe gun handling; and some basic skills in sight and scope adjusting. Sign-up sheets will be posted at the range and the clubhouse in mid October. Even if you can only give a couple of hours, please volunteer. Junior Rifle - 45 Years and Still Going Strong It is hard to believe, but the club s Junior Rile program has been going on for over 45 years. Several grandparents, who themselves shot in the program, are now bringing their grandchildren to Junior Rifle. Our program is open to all local youth, ages 10 to 18. The first meeting is Wednesday, December 6. Your club provides all the gear the young shooter will need, including free.22 ammo. The Wednesday night sessions run from 6:30 to 8:00 PM and you can join the program at anytime. There is an $18.00 enrollment fee and then a $3.00 charge for each follow on session. Here is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your kids and grandchildren. To enroll just show up around 6:15 PM at the club on the Junior Rifle Wednesdays and we ll get you signed up. Win a Free Membership You could get your next year s club membership for free. How? Just fill in your 2018 Official Negaunee Rod & Gun Club ballot and drop it off at the club house by Monday, October 16. When you vote your club # will be entered into a drawing for a free 2018 Club membership. Your ballot is enclosed in this newsletter and extras are available at the clubhouse. One vote per member, of course. Vote today! Members Who Have Passed 2017 has seen the passing of several of our long time club members. Keep in your prayers the families of: Tony Moore Vern Crawford Roger Smokey Stott Dennis Van Buren

Don t Buy Your Wife a Gun In my experience of 18 years of teaching NRA Personal Protection in the Home (the CPL course) I have seen some terrible choices in first handgun options for novice shooters, i.e. wives. Men buy pistols that they like, not handguns that are suited for their spouses. A typical choice that men buy for their wives is a snub-nose,.38 Special and yes, we ll add a laser sight. Never mind that a short barreled handgun is difficult to shoot, produces a rough recoil, and is dangerous for a beginner to handle. Sounds like a great choice for your wife, eh? Then there are those men who think to them themselves, well let s spend a lot of money and get her something really first rate, say a Kimbler Micro 1911 (for $700 plus). Never mind that it is very dangerous to carry in condition one (cocked and locked) and that it takes a pro wrestler s arm strength to work the slide. Yes, I ve seen both of these handguns in lady beginner's hands who have no idea how to safely and effectively shoot these pistols. Well, what is a good first handgun for a novice shooter? For starters, let s go with a.22 Long rifle rim-fire handgun. A Walther P22 or a Ruger SR22 semi-auto pistol are two great starter guns, as well as, a Ruger LCRX.22 Revolver. Light recoil, cheap to shoot, and even fun to use, What could be better? By golly, she might even enjoy shooting! Now let us go to a more powerful center -fire caliber that would be suitable for self protection. The current trend is to buy a small framed.380 caliber handgun such as a Ruger LCP.380 or a S&W.380 Body Guard. Solid guns, but still harder to master for most beginner shooters. Also.380 ammo runs about $24.00 a box. More appropriate is a handgun chambered for 9mm Luger. This ammunition cost about half as much as.380 Auto and is more readily available. The perceived recoil is about the same and the pistols chambered for this caliber more easily fill the hand. Some great choices in 9 mm are the Ruger LCR/S, the Glock 43, and S&W Model MP Shield. It will require some practice to become proficient with these handguns, but they are great handguns for one s personal protection..40 S&W caliber and.45 ACP caliber pistols should be reserved to those who are much more proficient with a pistol. However, with practice, many women can become very capable when shooting these more powerful cartridges. I would encourage those women who want to learn to handle a handgun safely and have the opportunity to try various handguns to join the Ladies Pistol Sessions each Wednesday at our club. Contact Helen Kahn at <iskivalleyspur@gmail.com> for further information about this great program. President s Corner Your fellow club members keep asking questions and wanting more events at our club. Here are some of their latest comments: Q. The cost of the proposed new Pole Barn seems like a lot of money. How are we going to pay for it? A: Several groups within the Negaunee Rod and Gun club have stepped forward and given very generous cash support. Most notably are the Mid UP Shooters, The Action Pistol fund, the Superior Riflemen and the Range Fund. Together they have put up $20,000 towards our new building. We expect to have to finance only about $30,000 of the $70,000 cost of the Pole Barn. Q. Why don t we sponsor a Sporting Clays championship shoot at our club? I think that the interest is there. A: I have been asking myself and the Mid UP Shooters that very question now for some time. Offer an all day Sporting Clays shoot with several challenging venues; invite one of those mobile restaurant trucks to setup for lunch; and give out a bunch of door prizes. Guaranteed, you would get people to show up. We just need some of our Sporting Clay shooters to step up and make it happen. Q: When exactly do my club dues need to be paid? A: Our club bylaws state that dues are paid annually and are due no later than January 1 of each year. Most long time members pay their dues early in the fall for the upcoming year and I would hope that you would do the same. Personally, I feel that it is a real waste of club money to have to send reminder notices out to delinquent club members. Q I really enjoy shooting at all of the new steel targets that the club has installed of late. Can we get something at 100 yards to shoot at? A: As of yet we have not found anything that is capable of standing up to the constant pounding (aka, high energy impacts) that a rifle round produces at 100 yards. It is not a question of thicker or harder steel, but how to better bullet proof the hanging support for the targets. We have not given up and have a couple of more ideas to try. 3 Q: I paid my dues and went to use my range card and it would not work. What gives? A: Well, first off you were five months late paying your dues. The range cards are updated once a week via computer (usually on Monday evenings) and depending on where in the week you actually paid your late dues, it can take up to two weeks to reactivate your card. This Issue s Mystery Gun What is it, caliber, and who made it? NRA Membership Discounts Did you know that if you renew or join the NRA through your club that you can get a great discount and your club receives a rebate? Current NRA membership rates through the club are: Annual - $30 ($10 savings) 3 Year - $85 ($15 savings) 5 Year - $100 ($40 savings) Life - $1,000 ($500 savings) See Jon at the clubhouse or contact Reg Lipp to get signed up for these great savings. Mid November comes fast Bucky, and if you know what s good for you you d come to Canada with me!

Tiovo s Sports Tips Use The Right Gas: : Briggs and Stratton strongly recommends using premium grade gasoline in all of their small engines. Regular grade gasoline contains ethanol (gasohol) which can ruin seals and damage fuel lines. The higher cost of premium gas is easily offset by the reduced maintenance expense that you would otherwise encounter. Freshening Up Your Camp or Trailer: Want to get rid of those musty odors or other strange smells from your once closed up camp or trailer? Well, pick up a bag of cheap charcoal; place several large handfuls of the black stuff into a large empty coffee can that you have ventilated along the sides and top. Within several days the charcoal will have absorbed all of the unwanted aromas. Look for Weeds A lot of big fish, like largemouth bass and northern pike, like to ambush their prey from a nice comfy weed bed. Locate some weed beds in the lake your fishing in and try getting your bait and/or lure in that area to see if you can coax a fish to bite. The weed beds that lead to deeper water and create a break line are the best honey pots. Half Moon Honeying Moon : Despite conventional wisdom, the best time for fishing success is always found when the moon is half full. Wait until midnight before setting out and cast off to the lake s far shore. Night crawlers work best at this time, set about a foot off of the bottom. After three AM the feeding frenzy will halt, so head back to shore. Peppermint Schnapps with a Blatz chaser is a good end for this Pisces adventure. Towel the Floor: Placing a towel on the floor underneath your reloading press will catch spilled primers and wayward brass cases that would otherwise roll under your reloading bench out of reach This trick is also handy when you are filling up your weekly pill boxes. CPL Class Update Because of low enrollment the October 7 CPL Class has been cancelled. The next scheduled CPL class will be on February 3, 2018. Spring Newsletter Mystery Gun The rifle featured in the Spring Newsletter was an Ithaca Model 49.22 cal rimfire that was introduced for only $20.00 in 1961 and was produced until 1979. The rifle looks like a conventional lever action repeater with an 18 inch barrel, but in fact the Model 49 is a single shot falling block with a dummy magazine tube. For just one year in 1962 this rifle was also offered in.22 Magnum. The current value of the Model 49 is $95-145 with the.22 Magnum model worth an additional 20%. Range Closure Dates Sept 7 10:00 AM-2:00 PM- Range Maintenance Sept 9 All Day - Youth Day Activities Sept 11 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM - NMU Field Day Sept 14 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Ishpeming PD Qualifications Sept 21 10:00 AM -2:00 PM - Range Maintenance Oct 12 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM - Range Maintenance Nov 1-30 - Range Open All Dec 1-31 - Range Open All Youth Director Wanted We are looking for an energetic club member to take on the position as Youth Director for the club. Duties would include, but not limited to, coordinating Youth Day and the Hunter Safety program, promoting the Junior Rifle program and designing new activities for our younger club members. If you are interested please contact any member of the club s Board of Directors. Upgrade Your Camp Range We have a few steel Biathlon targets that need some TLC and are surplus to our needs. They would make a great addition to someone s camp range. For just $50 you too can have one of these neat targets. See Ken Goldsworthy or Mark Knoebel if you are interested. 7
