Bobsleigh Participation - Very strong European participation in bobsleigh. Asia was hardly represented at all, with only 2 NOCs. Noteworthy presence of Latin America in this discipline. - The level of participation was much lower among wo than (30 wo for 62, vs 33 NOCs). This difference was not just due to the presence of the four-man bob event for. In fact, 38 two-man bobsleigh teams were accepted, compared to for wo. Wo's bobsleigh, a relatively recent discipline, could still develop more widely and claim a higher number of places at the Winter Olympics. Some NOCs, despite having the necessary equipt (pistes), were curiously absent in the wo's events (Austria, France, Latvia, Norway and Japan). - Compared to 998, and apart from the introduction of the wo's events, the level of participation remained stable, although there was a slight increase in the number of NOCs represented (increasing from 28 to 24). number of athletes 4 's participation wo's participation Participating NOC's in bobsleigh source : IOC Bobsleigh: High level of male participation, mainly from Europe IOC / noc dpt - cerso - 2002 Results - Not surprisingly, three NOCs accounted for the total number of medals. - On the other hand, a larger number of NOCs (0) had one or more finalists, of whom 8 practiced on an artificial bobsleigh piste. - The introduction of the wo's events did not lead to any major upsets in the distribution of medals, and the winners were once again those countries who traditionally are quite strong in this discipline. Compared to 998, there was a slight reduction in the number of elite (despite one extra event), and the number of medal-winning NOCs dropped from 6 to 3. The opposite was the case for the finalists, with an increase from to 0 NOCs.

luge Participation - Participation in the luge is less Europe-centred than the bobsleigh. - Seven NOCs sent large delegations. - The uneven rate of participation between and wo is also noticeable in this event (29 wo compared to 80, vs 24 NOCs respectively), although the difference is less marked than in bobsleigh. Once again, this difference is not fully explained by the different number of events, but rather the number of places available - for instance, there were 29 female participants (maximum 30 places available) compared to 0 male competitors. - Compared to 998, there was little change in the number of NOCs represented (slight increase from 24 to 26), the number of female athletes remained the same, but there was a significant increase in the number of (+2%), despite the fact that the participation quotas did not change between 998 and 2002. This increase was mainly in favour of NOCs who are not particularly strong performers in the discipline, such as Canada (+ athletes), France, Slovakia and Russia (+3)... number of athletes 0 's participation wo's participation Participating NOC's in luge source : IOC Luge: contrasting distribution Results - Only four NOCs shared the medals, namely Austria, United States, Italy, and particularly Germany, who put in an especially strong performance in the wo s events. - These same NOCs also occupied the finalist places (although Italy lagged behind somewhat). Only three other NOCs (Canada, Russia and Ukraine) made a modest appearance (one finalist each) in the top ranks of this sport. - Germany, Austria and United States performed just as well in the s events as in the wo s events. - The distribution of the medals was the same as in 998. On the other hand, in 2002, two NOCs more had a place in the finals. In Nagano, only the Ukraine had managed to break into the circle of the four major countries of the luge. 3

Skeleton Participation - The rate of participation in skeleton is the lowest of all the disciplines (39 athletes), although the number of NOCs (9) is not the smallest. - Three NOCs sent relatively large delegations, namely Germany, Canada and the United States. - Male participation is twice as high as that of wo (26 for only 3 wo, 8 vs 0 NOCs). The number of female participants represents the smallest number of NOCs for any individual event in the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics (team sports not included, of course). - This discipline does not appear to be fully structured yet among the wo athletes (3 athletes for one event is a really low level of participation). Competitions in this sport are a recent phenoon, and the wo s World Cup only exists since the 996/97 season (and only 7 NOCs participated in it). The first World Championships took place in 2000 (4 NOCs participated in the 200 edition). There is much room for further developt in this sport, particularly as regards the wo s competitions. number of athletes 's participation wo's participation Participating NOC's in skeleton source : IOC Skeleton: Low level of participation IOc / noc dpt - cerso - 2002 Results - Four NOCs won one or more medals (Austria, United States, Great Britain and Switzerland) and 7 had at least one finalist. - The United States emerged as strong performers, with 2 medals in the wo s events (out of a possible 2) and one medal and 2 finalists in the s competition. - It is interesting to note the excellent performance of Ireland, with one finalist (who was not very far winning a medal, finishing fourth). This is a first for this NOC in the history of the Winter Olympics.
