THE OCTAGON NEWS Volume XLIV No. 6 April 2017 Tune Up Clinic April 22 Finally Your Chance to Own Louie s MGA Hot Exhaust Skip Peterson A s you re reading this, the Tune-Up clinic is still a few days away, but I m going to add some items to your spring list. For me, its kind of therapy, in an odd and somewhat uncomfortable way. Block off about three hours or so, and get that MG up on jack stands. After you ve changed the oil and filter, and lubed all of the grease fittings you can find, take a short break and crawl out from under the car. Grab a small flashlight and your sockets, and then get back under the car and start looking for every nut and bolt you can find. Put the socket on them and make sure they are tight. Exhaust headers, transmission mounts, fuel pump mounts, etc. I was doing this last year, preparing for the run to Louisville and noticed a bolt that seemed very loose. At first I couldn t quite place what I was looking at, and then I reached up to see how loose it was and discovered I could tighten with my fingers. Southwestern Ohio Centre -- MG Car Club P.O. Upcoming MGCC Events Apr: 9 Winston Churchill Day 22 Tune Up Clinic at MG Automotive 26 Meeting at Rusty Bucket May: 5 Cinco de Mayo (duh!) 24 Meeting at Rusty Bucket 27 2 nd Street Market Jun: 2 National Doughnut Day 28 Meeting at Rusty Bucket See meeting minutes for other area activities!! Then I realized I was tightening one of motor mounts that attached to the block. Glad I caught that before the long trip, we had enough fun without having an engine fall out! I m not sure I had ever noticed that bolt before, and it was all because I was using a small hand held flashlight. You gotta look in all the nooks and crannies. If you can put a wrench on it, do it. Once you ve worked your way to the rear bumper, it s time to take the wheels off and adjust the drum brakes and check the shock bolts. While you re at it make sure all the bolts are tight in the coil spring pans. Last, but not least, when you put the wheels back on, but don t just tighten them, torque them to 60-65 ft. lbs. A number of years ago, we had a member have a wheel come loose returning from BCD in Cincinnati and that s pretty damn scary, so make sure those lug nuts are tight. Since you ve had so much fun under the car, now pop that bonnet open and start doing the same thing. Make sure everything that s not supposed move doesn t, and everything that should move does. Now fire it up and go for a drive, knowing you re set for the driving season. Tune Up Clinic D on t forget the Tune Up Clinic is Saturday, April 22, at MG Automotive in Kettering. Starting time? Ending time? Come and work on your car, or hang out and have fun, or come for the coffee and doughnuts! For Sale: Louie DiPasquele s 1961 MGA It s finally done. Come to the Tune Up Clinic on April 22 to see the new dash board on Steve Markman s MG TD (weather permitting). We all loved Louie and his MGA. Now, you have the chance to own it. The car, a 1961 MGA 1600, came from New Mexico and was originally painted Alamo Beige, a color sold only in the southwest. It was purchased at Mid-Ohio in 1985 by a man who began restoration. He took the car to a body shop where it was stripped and then left outside to rust. After some negotiation and hassles, the man got the car back from the body shop in sad condition. The car, by then a basket case, was purchased by Bob Mason of MG Automotive. The body was covered with rust and the restoration, although not worked on full time, was four years in the making. Louie saw the car at MG Automotive and told Steve Miller he had to have it when finished, which he did. MG Automotive did the mechanical work and the paint and body work was done at a body shop in Clayton OH. The car had been raced in New Mexico and at Mid-Ohio, in the Vintage class, but now began a new life as a concours show car. Louie added wide whitewall tires. The car won several awards at various car shows: Second place at Cleveland Rocks MGs Roll, First place in Holiday at Home Car show, First place at BCD2000 in Dayton, OH and Second place at a Langs Chevrolet car show. Louie also drove it to Cincinnati for their British Car Day and Concours do Elegance. See the add in the Classified section for contact info. - Page 3 -

Car (Song Lyrics) of the Month Working at the Car Wash Blues By Jim Croce Well, I had just got out from the county prison Doin' ninety days for non support Tried to find me an executive position But no matter how smooth I talked They wouldn't listen to the fact that I was a genius The man say, we got all that we can use Now I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin' Working at the car wash blues Well, I should be sittin' in an air conditioned office In a swivel chair Talkin' some trash to the secretaries Sayin', here, now mama, come on over here Instead, I'm stuck here rubbin' these fenders with a rag And walkin' home in soggy old shoes With them steadily depressin', low down mind messin' Workin' at the car wash blues You know a man of my ability He should be smokin' on a big cigar But till I get myself straight I guess I'll just have to wait In my rubber suit a rubbin' these cars Well, all I can do is a shake my head You might not believe that it's true For workin' at this end of Niagara Falls Is an undiscovered Howard Hughes So baby, don't expect to see me With no double martini in any high brow society news 'Cause I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin' Workin' at the car wash blues So baby, don't expect to see me With no double martini in any high brow society news 'Cause I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin' Workin' at the car wash blues Yeah I got them steadily depressin', low down mind messin' Workin' at the car wash blues Written by Jim Croce Copyright BMG Rights Management US, LLC - Page 4 -

March 2017 MGCC Meeting was called to order at 7:37. There were 28 members in attendance at the start of the meeting. President Skip Peterson, "I hope we have as much fun this week as we had last month." Sam Hodges President's Report. "There isn't a lot to report. Hemming's Sports & Classics magazine has ceased publication. If you have a subscription, you'll start get Hemming's Classics for the duration of your subscription." April 23rd there's a cruise in at Dayton Raceway Casino (off Wagoner Ford). It starts at 10am and runs to 3pm. There are 5 classes of cars. Classic, pickup, sports car, hotrod and. If we want, we can make it a MGCC event. Skip continued, "Somehow, last year our membership with the Mother club lapsed. I paid the 50 ($62US). I called the Treasurer of the Mother club and made sure that everything's good. We're still on the books and we're still at 50-years." - Page 5 -

Skip, "Previously, I have talked about trying to get a club archive together." John Scocozzo, "The website's got back to 2003." Skip, "If anyone has any old newsletters that have who our officers were, or our events were we'd appreciate getting copies of those." Skip, "Art Barnes, our expert on Robert's rules. is it okay to talk bout a tabled motion?" Art. "No. It has to be removed." Terry, "Motion to remove the motion. What motion are we talking about?" Skip, "we'll get back to that later...' Vice President's Report. Ed isn't here. Minutes were next. Bonnie Hankey motioned to accept the Minutes as reported. Dave McCann Sr. seconded. MGCC voted. Minutes approved. Treasurer's Report was next. Again, there was some discussion as to whether we should make this a twoyear detail. Treasurer Cheri Farrell, "The MGCC had total expenses of: Newsletter Postage ($16.88) + February Gumball ($10.00) for a total expense to the MGCC of $26.88. The MGCC had total gains of: Membership Dues ($40.00) for a total gain to the MGCC was $40.00. Monthly total losses when subtracted from losses means a gain to the MGCC of $13.12. When added to our beginning balance of $2,428.70 leaves the MGCC with an ending balance of $2,442.04 in the primary checking account. $30.00 cash on hand leaves the MGCC with a balance of $2,472.04. The Savings account currently has $379.83. Total ending balance of all accounts was $2,851.87. Art Barnes motioned to accept the Treasurer's report. Eddie Hill seconded. As it involves money, Eddie cannot object. Membership was next. Carole Looft, "We gained 3 members last month. Total is now 72. John has a 1978 MGB. Jim Foster from Elida, OH is looking for an MG TD. Bill Maple from Maineville, OH has a 1977 MGB that's been chrome bumper swapped. Birthdays this month: Charlie McCamey, Skip "Well, Charlie's had a lot of birthdays." Carole continued, "Charlie McCamey, Rachel Johnson, Ron Parks, Linda Wolfe, Reuben Wasserman at the end of the month." Skip, "Can I back up, and I can since I'm the President. I didn't call a board meeting last month because there were a bunch of other things going on. We went to Texas for a wedding. Did you know that there are a helluva lot of Lamborghinis' in Dallas. They were everywhere. On an unrelated note, no officer can hold the same office consecutively and the President can't hold an office for one year. The Treasurer's term is kind of a pain. We've discussed changing that to a 2-year term just because of all the banking paperwork that has to be changed. Do we want to explore that option? It would be a change in the bylaws." Bonnie H., "You could change the bylaws but give them the option of only taking one." Cherie Farrell, "It's not brain surgery. It takes 1/2 hour." Dave McCann, Jr., "You're just saying that to get someone else to do it." Terry Happensack, "You could just lift the restriction so that the Treasurer can stay in position if they want instead of limiting it to 2-years." Dave McCann, Sr. "Having been Treasurer, it's a pain to change the paperwork regularly. I'm still getting emails from banks." Dave Gribler, "If you allow consecutive years, then you run the risk of an unscrupulous person bleeding the Treasury dry and then skipping town." Skip, "This is viable, so I think we need to find a way to screw this up. Somewhere in the next month or two, there'll be a Board meeting." Art Barnes motions to refer the matter to the Board. (Thanks Art. You and your stupid Robert's Rules). MGCC voted. We, the Board, now have to bring something to the MGCC. - Page 6 -

Vice President Ed walks in... Newsletter was next. Steve's not here, man, that s two meetings in a row that he s missed. Sunshine Committee. Jennifer's not here and Carole's only doing birthdays. Skip, "So we'll assume that everyone's still good." Webmaster John Scocozzo, "Nothing new here. Newsletters are out there. I also upgraded the security just in case the Russians want to hack." Activities with Eddie. Eddie, "It's Spring time!" MGCC "YAY!" Eddie continued, "Nothing through the end of this month. However, in April, April 22nd is the Tune-up Clinic. 9am at MG Automotive on Wilmington Pike. We'll be there until Steve throws us out." Steve, As long as there' scoffed and doughnuts, that might take a while." April 23rd is the Raceway Casino Cruise-in on Wagoner Ford Rd. from 10-3." Skip, "There's not a tree in sight Lots of asphalt." Eddie, "May 27th brings us the Second Street Market British Museum of Transportation show. 9am-3pm. Sat. Ron Parks, "Would Sunday May 21st be a good day for a spring drive?" Art, "Do we trust him?" Skip, "He stays within a towable distance to his house so that the tows are always free. He's got that going for him." Eddie continues, "May 6th is Drive your MGA day. Sunday June 4th is the British return to Perrysburg. Cincinnati British Car Day is June 11th. Beer Break called for at 8:07. Back from Brake at 8:24. Skip, "Does anyone know the origin of Old Speckled Hen? It was the 50th Anniversay of the MG and someone named Ian Williams went to the Moreland brewmaster and requested a special beer for the 50th Anniversary. There are actually two stories, one about an owner who ordered a special paint scheme. The other it was a Model 14-80 that was used by the factory paint shop to carry paint. But the Ian Williams story is the one that most people attribute as the true story behind the beer." Skip, "Let's clear up some formal stuff." The floor was ceded to Lois Gribler. Lois. "NAMGAR/NAMGBR. I was hoping to implore the club members to join either one or both registers. They both support our local clubs and it's important that we're part of a National organization that supports our hobby." Skip, "There's a Facebook page for British parts wanted or needed. It's pretty good. Check it out." Brit Museum of Transportation. There's no one here from the Museum. News is it's still there. Tech Tips. Terry Looft, "I highly recommend the John Twist workshops. (Holding up two shiny carbs) These are the result of the carburetor workshop. I've done gearboxes as well. He does 4 workshops a year. Carburetor, 3-synchro gearbox, 4-synchro gearbox and T-series. $395 per session. They're always right after the first of the year." Old Business. Charlie McCamey, "We don't have any." Skip, "Art, what do we do?" Art, "We have to have a motion to remove a motion from the table." Ron motioned to remove the motion from the table. Bonnie seconded. Skip, "NOW we can talk about it. The motion was that we have a $10 per year - Page 7 -

surcharge for printed copies. That said, we don't need to raise the dues, all we need to do is add the $10 surcharge. I don't think this needs to be a bylaws issue. The prorate of dues only applies to new members. After a search of the bylaws, there's nothing in there that even requires a newsletter to be printed." The motion is that we're going to add a $10/year to the annual dues IF you want a printed copy of the newsletter starting with the September renewal. If you want it electronically, you'll get it for free, but paper is going to be a $10 handling fee. Carole, "I've got a question." Skip, "SO close!" Terry Looft, "Welcome to my world." Carole. "How do we handle the proration?" Skip, "It's only new members who get the proration." Carole, "If some new member joins in February, do we still charge them the full $10?" Skip, "We'll just make it a dollar per issue on the proration and keep it simple." MGCC voted. Motion to add a $10 surcharge for paper copies of the newsletter with a $1 per issue prorate for new members was approved. So if you join with 8 months left, you will pay $8. Approved. Eddie, "I have a question..." For Sale. Ron, "I have an MGB Airpump. I'll take $200. or even $0." In Upper Arlington there's a '58-59 MGA that's been parked since 1969. Groveport Ohio. All original.
