from an anonymous source Fall riding is in full swing. Just remember those pesky wet leaves that are hiding in the turns. The Crud is this weekend, along with our meeting. I hope to see a big turn out at both. And I hope that everyone has been riding the tires off their bikes so that we can maintain the domination of the MOA mileage contest. I still have high hopes of racking up just a few more miles by riding to the Falling Leaf this year. I have yet to make it down to Missouri for one reason or another, but since I have only gone to one rally (our own GR-3) this year, I am highly motivated to give it my best shot. I would like to thank everyone who has sent in Dave Maly remembrances. I want to encourage everyone else to write a short note or send a photo with a caption for the special newsletter edition devoted to this outstanding former member of our club and very special human being. Time To Pass The Torch First, let s go for a stroll down memory lane. Back in May 2007, GR3 Rally Czar Roland Thompson put out the word that he was going to step down and was looking for a replacement. At that time, I only had one or two years of club membership under my belt. One night, during that rally, I ended up at the Old Oak Inn with Roland and a few others. I asked Roland a few probing questions about what a Rally Czar actually did. During the discussions, he bought me a couple of Brandy Old Fashion Sweets, which certainly didn t hurt his recruitment efforts. I was already potentially interested before the drinks; however I still left without any commitment to take over. The next morning at the rally, the rumor mill was running full steam. Roland bought me between 10 and 12 Brandy Old Fashions and I had accepted the Rally Czar position in a drunken stupor! I eventually accepted the position and later Jim Low joined on as Rally Co-Chair. Together we ve chaired the rally from 2008-2011 (4 years). We are both stepping down this year, so the position will have to be filled for 2012. I will not be swayed into changing my mind, even with more liquor! It s time, as they say, to pass the torch! So, please consider stepping up to chair or co-chair this club position when the elections come in November at the end of the year banquet! The dates for the 2012 rally have already been set (May 18-20) at the same great location in Soldiers Grove s Veterans Park. After 4 years in the same location, the whole rally process has become much easier to manage. Jim Low and I will sit down with the new chair(s) and go through the implementation plans we have been following so that you will know exactly what needs to be done (and when). The village contacts are very good to work with and will help you along too. Over the years, we added a computer application for registration. Jim Low has agreed to continue to manage this portion of the rally chair duties, so you don t have to worry about that. Everything from the previous rally will be put on a disk. You ll have a great starting point. At least one of the rally chairs needs to be computer literate, at least enough to be comfortable with sending and receiving e-mails. You ll also need to print a few things, like the Rally Schedule, in Microsoft Word or some kind of word processor. Jim and I added a lot of things over the years that don t have to be done, so the required work load will be somewhat reduced. However, this will still require a fair amount of work, with spurts at different times of the year. We both will be available to answer questions and help you through anything you don t understand. And don t forget about the great core of volunteers that pitch in every year. It s amazing how much gets done without any need for direction from the chair(s). So, please give the position some consideration. It can be a lot of fun and I ve met a lot of great people through the process. Jim Harms & Jim Low Rally Co-chairs

2011 GR3 Rally Report To fulfill our Rally Chair obligations, here is a delayed summary of the 2011 Great River Road Rally! The 2011 GR3 went very well this year, although attendance was down due to the wet forecast. In the end, we hardly had any precipitation, but heavy rains in the Twin Cities area may have kept some bikers away. Attendance was 228 riders, down from the record setting 301 last year. We beat our previous pre-registration record as well. Once again, the park looked great! The village has been adding trees and landscaping every year. In fact, later in the summer they planted a tree in honor of our club. I believe it is up near the intersection of Highway 61 and Hwy 131. Schlossmann s BMW Motorcycles of Milwaukee was our major sponsor and supplied the Rally mugs for the thirsty folks. The first official event, beyond the beginning of registration, was the tapping of kegs donated by Mike Shannon and Sam Garst. The Kickapoo Pony Club, offered meals to the hungry on Friday night. Tom Van Horn also led a dinner ride to Karen s Supper Club in Boaz. Our Saviors Lutheran Church group offered up a hearty all you can eat breakfast on Saturday morning, before riders headed out for the day. Dave Maly led his final annual touring ride, performing that duty admirably for 36 of the 37 rallies. We ll all miss him! He always planned out the rides very well, coming up with some great touring stops! Dennis Maly has volunteered to lead the touring ride for future GR3s in honor of his Dad. Todd Herbst took over the GS ride lead this year. His hillbilly route theme was a hit with riders as they moseyed on mostly gravel roads through 3 states. We added a twist this year, with having riders match up BMW motorcycle sounds with a club member s bike. Additional lighting was also added to the bathroom sinks. There were a large number of door prizes donated by various organizations this year, so your chances of winning were pretty good. The Lions club provided a delicious boneless BBQ pork ribs dinner to the hungry riders on Saturday night, and hosted a beverage stand for those dry in the mouth. A young couple from Illinois won the pre-registration hotel stay at Holiday Shores Motel in Marquette IA. They have been attending the rally for many years and were thrilled to win. Jack from Kenosha won the 50/50 and graciously donated $100 of his winnings to the Soldiers Grove Park fund. I m sure we missed a few things. However, we would like to profusely thank all the volunteers and vendors again this year. It made the event go really smooth! Special thanks to Dick Olson for storage and delivery of all the Rally supplies! Jim Harms Jim Low Co-Rally Chairs
