Race Start Time: 9:00am RACE FOR THE RIVER KAYAKALON RACE INFORMATION Saturday, May 2, 2015 GENERAL INFORMATION Arrival Time: Arrive at Goose Creek State Park (click on link for directions), no later than 8:00am. Park gates will open for racers at 7:00am, no earlier. Check-in will begin at 7:00am. Pre-race Meeting: Mandatory pre-race meeting will begin at 8:45 sharp at the kayak start. Kayak/Bike drop-off: You will be directed first into the kayak drop-off area. Be prepared to quickly help the volunteers take your kayak off your vehicle for loading onto trailers. Tell the volunteer your age category (or team). Your kayak will be tagged and transported to the kayak start area. (Note: Keep your paddles and PFD with you until you have parked your car, then bring them to the kayak beach with you.). Then park your car and walk/ride your bike to the transition area, drop off your bike and gear and proceed to the check-in area. (Kayaks can be dropped off on Friday from 4-6pm. PTRF / Goose Creek State Park, will not be responsible for your equipment.) Rented Kayaks: If you rented a kayak from us, you will be directed to park. Park your car, stage your bike, then proceed to the check-in area. When you arrive at the kayak beach, tell the volunteer your name and age or team category and they will assist you in finding your kayak. All rented kayaks will be tagged with your name and colored coded heat. Parking: Participants will be directed where to park by signs and staff. There is limited parking, so please car-pool if you are able. State Park Rules: The speed limit in the park is 25 mph. Alcohol strictly prohibited. Check in / Numbering: The check in area will be visible from the kayak drop area. You will receive your race bags and timing chips. The body-numbering station will be at the check in area. Leave yourself enough time to get checked in before the 8:45 meeting. Timing Chips: Timing and scoring conducted by Run the East LLC. Results will be posted at www.runtheeast.com. All participants must pickup their assigned timing chip on race morning and return it after the race. If you lose your timing chip there is a $10 fee. RACE INFORMATION Kayak Leg: Kayaks will be separated into appropriate wave (heat) staging areas before the race (all kayaks are tagged with appropriate colors see heat info below). The kayak start will be from the water. Each wave will enter the water, board their kayaks and wait for the starting signal. Kayakers MUST wear a personal flotation device. We may have a few extras on hand. There will be only 2 heats this year.
Upon exiting the water, safely beach your kayak, stow your paddle inside and continue to the run transition area. Volunteers will move your kayak from the shoreline. Relay teams: your biker will wait for the paddler at the transition area. The paddler will run through the timing mat, and then hand the chip bracelet off to the biker, where he/she will then begin the bike. Paddlers, immediately exit the transition area. Bikes can only be mounted outside of the marked transition area. It is recommended that you wear Teva-type sandals or water shoes while kayaking. You may want to bring an extra towel (or water) to clean your feet before changing into your biking/ running shoes. The run to the bike transition, or relay exchange area, will not be comfortable on your bare feet. 2015 heats o To be determined depending on participants Bike Transition Area: No bike storage the night before the race. Participants only allowed in the transition area. Only the racers will be allowed to remove their bikes from the transition area. Mount your bikes only OUTSIDE the transition area (it will be marked on the pavement) Relay teams: Once the paddler passes the timing chip, only the biker is allowed inside the transition area. Bike Leg: Hard shell (ANSI or Snell approved) helmets must be worn. Helmets must be fastened before leaving the transition area. Stay to the right to allow faster cyclists to pass. WATCH FOR RUNNERS AS YOU RETURN TO THE TRANSITION AREA. No headphones, earphones, or any radio-type devices will be allowed. NO DRAFTING USAT rules 7 meters between bikes; 15 seconds to pass, if passed, you must drop out of the drafting box. The road into the park and bike course route will not be closed to traffic for the event. Watch for on-coming traffic and obey all traffic flaggers and law enforcement officers. We will have flaggers and plenty of directional signs on the course, but it is ultimately your responsibility to know the course. Relay teams: Runner must stay just outside the transition area exit. Biker must dismount, then hand-off the wrist band to their runner. Run Leg: The course will be well marked with flagging and directional markers at each intersection. Two aid stations will be located on the run course. No headphones, earphones or any radio-type devices will be allowed. Runners must stay on the shoulder once on the main park road. Stay to the left and run against traffic. You will be sharing the road with bikers and cars! **Note: In case of rain, the run course may be changed to the main park road. The trail has several board-walks that may become slippery and dangerous if wet. This will be a race day decision. The run course will be clearly marked if it is changed to an out-andback run on the main park road.
Post Race Refreshments: Available near the finish line. Awards: You must be present to receive your award. No awards will be mailed. Award presentations will be at picnic area near the swim beach of the Park. Once you complete your race, safely load your gear and join us for post race refreshments and awards. Award presentations will begin immediately after the last competitor finishes the race. Estimated time for the awards ceremony is Noon. After Party: Come Join us at Backwater Jacks in Washington after the race. There is a 10% off coupon in your race bags. We ll have music from 12:30-2:30pm.
