EMC test chamber Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory The EMC test laboratory has two anechoically lined screened rooms, five non-anechoic screened rooms, and a mode stir high field strength reverberation chamber. The facility covers the test frequency range from DC to 40GHz for radiated emission and susceptibility tests. Field strengths are available up to 2000V/m. Tests utilising electromagnetic pulses (damped sine wave) are also available within this laboratory and there is an additional transient test area that caters to DC/AC voltage transients, AC frequency transients and variations. These tests are performed using a programmable solid-state transient and power interrupt supply for powers up to 3KVA single-phase or 1KVA three-phase power. The largest chambers are 8.5m long by 7.5m wide by 4.2m high. The access door is 3.0m wide by 3.5m high. Adjacent to each screened room is a shielded control/test equipment room. HIRF test chamber
Capabilities of Electromagnetic Compatibility Facilities The range of tests that encompass EMC are: Conducted emission (frequency range 20Hz to 400MHz) Radiated magnetic field emission (frequency range 20Hz to 150kHz) Radiated electric field emission (frequency range 10kHz to 40GHz) Conducted susceptibility audio frequency (frequency range 20Hz to 150kHz) Conducted susceptibility RF (frequency range 10kHz to 400MHz) Radiated electric field susceptibility (frequency range 10kHz to 40GHz) Electromagnetic pulse (EMC covering the range 10kHz to 100MHz) Conducted voltage transients Power supply frequency variations Electrostatic discharge Compass safe distance (magnetic influence) Supplies available in EMC laboratory and in screened enclosures: 20kVA, three-phase, 400Hz (200V phase to phase) 30kVA, three-phase, 50Hz (415V phase to phase) 3kVA, single phase, variable frequency 1kVA, three-phase, variable frequency 240V, 13A, single phase, 50Hz 28VDC, 60A Other DC voltages are available HIRF test chamber
Environmental Test Laboratory The climatic and dynamic test facilities provided at the Environmental Test Laboratory are extensive. They include: Climatic Most of our climatic chambers have viewing windows and cable/utility entry ports to enable UUT operation. Vacuum sealing is achieved using a non-setting putty. Temperature/altitude/humidity (TAH) Two chambers are capable of a wide range of combined TAH environments. Their internal volume is 1m x 1m x 1.5m deep. For products that require a ducted cooling air supply, one of the chambers is connected to an air conditioning rig which can supply a calibrated flow of temperature conditioned air directly to the product interface. The large-capacity 650cfm vacuum pumps enable us to hold altitude conditions at the same time as we inject cooling air. Icing - The TAH facilities can also be utilised to simulate icing and subsequent moisture breathing conditions experienced during flight descent. Temperature/humidity There are a variety of chambers for high and low temperature and humidity. The largest chamber is a walk in suitable for testing 1.83m high racks, etc. Votsch temperature/altitude/humidity chamber Thermal shock Thermal shock can be achieved by transferring among any of the thermal chambers. Explosive and rapid decompression The laboratory has developed specialised facilities for simulating the rapid pressure changes experienced during extreme flying conditions and high-altitude canopy burst emergencies. Decompression times as fast as 10msec can be achieved. Waterproofness/blowing rain A wide range of facilities are available to simulate a variety of conditions such as blowing rain, driving rain, drip, water spray and immersion. Salt corrosion A variety of salt mist and combined salt/humidity storage tests can be performed. Blowing rain Overpressure Cylindrical test chamber is 1m dia x 1m deep and capable of pressures up to 4 bar gauge.
Lansmont Shock Test Machine Environmental Facilities Dynamic Mounting Jigs Good interface jig design is fundamental to ensuring correct transmission of vibration and shock and providing a stable platform for distortion-free control. Getting it wrong can be extremely costly in terms of lost test time, possible product failure due to over testing, and subsequent jig redesign and modification. The facility also offers jig design and manufacturing services. Vibration/Shock on Shakers Each shaker is located in a separate room with a capability of applying vibration and shock in three axes. Normal orientation of the test item can be maintained at room temperature using high-pressure hydrostatic slip tables for the horizontal axes vibration. Single-direction vibration can also be applied at high and low temperature in our reliability test centre. Derritron VP12 shaker Using up-to-date vibration control technology, we can generate a wide range of test profiles including swept sine, sine dwell, broadband random, random on random, sine on random, gunfire, mixed modes, bump, classical shock (TP sawtooth, half sine, trapezoidal) and SRS shock. High-Level Shock Shocks up to 600g can be performed on products weighing up to 454Kg using our Lansmont shock machine, which can achieve durations ranging from 2ms to 80ms. Acceleration The centrifuge is capable of applying a maximum force of 25g on payloads up to 65Kg. In addition to the onboard mains supply, there are 30 x 5amp slip rings and two 1553 lines available for UUT operation. Test equipment can also be strapped onto a central platform, allowing direct UUT connection. Centrifuge Handling A variety of facilities are available for transit drop (free fall), bench handling and drop and topple testing.
The Faraday Test Centre encompasses facilities for a large range of environmental, climatic, vibration, shock and electromagnetic compatibility test methods covering a wide range of specifications (MIL-STD-461/462, MIL-STD-810, DEF-STAN 59-41, DEF-STAN-59-411, Eurofighter, RTCA DO-160, British Standards, etc.).
