I hope everyone had a lovely time with family and friends. As it has been a while since the last newsletter I would like to mention a couple of events that the club undertook before Christmas. The first is the Christmas Carols. Although the weather was a disappointment I would like to thank Claire and all the other hard workers who put in so much of their time to make this event happen. It is getting bigger every year. The other event was the gift wrapping stall that was held at Kawana Shoppingworld. This year the stall ran from late November until Christmas Eve. We had to man the station every day, so many thanks to all the people who helped out. In relation to the gift wrapping I would like to say a BIG thank-you to Gerry and the Staff of our sponsor Budget Direct for their help with this. Without their assistance the club would have found it hard to staff the stand for the amount of time that we did. Our juniors will be competing in the Branch titles at Dicky Beach this weekend so good luck to them. Our club has been asked to host the State IRB titles on our beach in July this year. We will be looking for people to assist in this as we have quite a few competitors who will be taking part in this carnival. That is all from me. See you on the beach Bistro Denis Abel SWIM TRAINING Kawana Aquatic Centre every Wednesday at 5.0pm For further information contact Rodney Weller on 040021888 Kids eat free with the purchase of a main meal on Tuesdays and Sundays Jag the Joker drawn on Sunday between 4 and 6pm. Blue Star Kawana Carols by the Beach-Claire Burke Nipper s major fundraiser of the season Kawana Carols by the Beach promised to be bigger than Ben Hur. With a line up all the other Christmas Carols on the coast would have been envious of and a fantastic array of food to choose from as well as entertainment and face painting for the kids it couldn t go wrong. Unfortunately, we couldn t control the weather and with cyclonic southerlies blowing away our sound man and ominous storm clouds circling it kept the crowds away. However, those intrepid families that ventured out got to see what a fantastic night was promised. Darren Percival (from The Voice), Todd and Sami (92.7 SeaFM) and a host of local talent that all generously donated their time and superb talent to the afternoon proved that Kawana Surf Club does do it best. We couldn t have put on the evening without the generous support of the below businesses including Clayton Williams. I would also like to take this opportunity to send our heartfelt thanks to all the surf club members who worked tirelessly on the evening in fairly difficult weather conditions. This is the sort of event that not only brings out the best in people from the club but also brings the Kawana Community together as a whole and we would not be able to continue to offer this event without the support of the community and the Kawana Surf Club members. Whilst the weather wasn t kind to us it didn t deter Darren and the crew saying they will be back for 2017 so book the date now (last Sunday before Christmas) it promises to be brilliant. Page 2
A Word From the Chuppa Chup Chaplain It is 2017 a New Year, a year full of opportunity, a year full of adventure, a year full of good times and some that will test us. Being tested is not a bad thing. It often will bring out something in us that can surprise us and inspire us. Competition is a form of testing, learning and then being required to implement what you have been taught is a form of testing. One of the best forms of testing is what I saw last Saturday on the beach at Kawana. It was a windy and hot day but nine new candidates turned up to learn to be Crewies in an IRB. With 4 of the best drivers and instructors in Australia, on hand to mentor, teach, and encourage I saw people tested and the smiles and the sense of achievement was incredible to see in each and every one. We have many incredible people at Kawana who can encourage, inspire and equip you. In 2017 let us all take the opportunity that testing brings to rise up and be better. Christmas Gift Wrapping Success In the five weeks leading up to Christmas our tireless volunteers put in a huge effort wrapping gifts for eager shoppers at Kawana Shoppingworld. A total of $11,14- was raised which will greatly assist in meeting our surf operational costs this year. Special thanks to Budget Direct who supplied staff to man the weekday roster. If you need a competitive quote for car insurance please go to their website. We would also like to thank Supporters Club staff, numerous Surf Club members and Community volunteers, our patron and member for Kawana, Mr Jarrod Bleijie and our event organiser, Nikki Firmin, who pulled the whole project together. Without everyone coming together and working as a team this fundraiser would not have been possible. A special function was put on by the Club in late January to thank these hard working volunteers. We are also extremely grateful to Claire and her team at Mirvac for allowing us this fundraising opportunity and we are hoping to repeat the Christmas gift wrapping again this year. Page 5
