Inside this edition: Election Results from the National Executive Board Elections Rule Change Proposals AAU Profiles Miles Mutschler From the Chairman s Seat Editorial Where is the AAU Dragon Heading Tournament Results The 2009 National AAU Kung Fu & Tai Chi Championships ROUND ROCK, TEXAS. It s only fitting that the fastest growing community in the nation would host the fastest growing Kung Fu and Tai Chi organizations, the 2009 AAU United States National Kung Fu Championships. Competitors from across America came to Round Rock, Texas just outside the state capitol of Austin, Texas to vie for the 2009 National Championships. It was the third and final year for Round Rock to host the event. To make it special some twist were added such as the beginning ceremonies in which schools from San Antonio, Laredo, Albuquerque, Dallas, Plano, Austin, and Round Rock manned the Dragon, Lions, and instruments to welcome the guest and to show that no matter what school or state you were from the spirit of friendship was alive and well. For the second straight year the first event saw a repeat outstanding performance by the demo team of Lee s White Leopard Kung Fu who remain undisputed Group Performance Champions. With Grand Master Johnny Lee in attendance, his group gave a sterling performance that shows the versatility in kung Fu. The results are to be released and published on www.aaunationalkungfuchampionships.com National Executive Board Elections Results As the first full term National Executive Board members James Man Chin of San Jose, California, Curtis Hardson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Franc Gomez of New York City, and Rick Clark of Payson, Arizona all had their terms come to an end and they chose to step aside to let the election process continue to take place. We take great pleasure in welcoming Sifu Tom Pardue of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Sifu Michael Aronson of Houston, Texas, Sifu Greg Butler of Columbia Missouri, and Sifu Charles Wilson of Chicago, Illinois to take the vacant positions on the National Executive Board. Tom Pardue Michael Aronson
Greg Butler Sifu Charles Wilson From the Chairman s Seat I want to thank everyone that came out to support our 2009 United States AAU Kung Fu and Tai Chi National Championships. Events like these take scarifies from the families that take the kids to practice throughout the year. Then there are the volunteers that lend us their time and efforts to be time keepers, scorers, and to register the competitors. There are the judges that support us with both their time and money to attend. Let s not forget the Sifu and coaches, plus the competitors for whom these events are designed to show case their abilities and skills. Behind all of this are the mothers and wives who allow us to abandon them part time to make these events happen as well as manning any unfilled positions the day of the event. As we move into the last year of my term as National Chairman, I would like to personally thank Sifu Dug Corpolongo National Vice Chairman, as well as Sifu Greg Watson National Rules Chairman, and our former National Executive Board members it has been a pleasure and honor to serve with you all. As we age off the board I would like to challenge our newest members to touch more people with direct contact explaining why we believe the AAU is the fairest, as well as the best place to hold competitive events, to spread the values associated with Chinese Martial Arts. Next month we will be voting on rule amendments, district and regional events, and future goals. We are your AAU, do not be timid to voice your concerns, suggestions, and ideas to the NEB members, the more minds at work the better for us all to choose what we want to accomplish. Dave Pickens AAU National Chairman Chinese Martial Arts Division. Post Note, Our heart and condolences go out to one of our star competitors Casey and his mother Wanda Hall at the lost of husband and father Charles (Chuck) Hall. Over the years as young Casey has developed on the martial arts tournament circuits, his success was due in large to the support Chuck had given his son driving him many miles for lessons. Chuck despite a failing health would not allow anything to sidetrack Casey s future in the Chinese Martial Arts and in fact, he was at Sifu J.K. Wong s event in Dallas in July when I last saw him and also at Sifu Nick Scrima s tournament in Las Vegas when his health finally gave out. Over the years Chuck had made many friends at the different tournaments he and his family have traveled to and supported, the Chinese Martial Arts. We have lost a good friend and companion. Rest in Peace Chuck. Rule Change Proposals During our annual meeting we had a proposal made concerning Tai Chi Pushing Hands contest. A motion was made and passed by the National Executive Board to have the clock to be a continuous running clock, only to be stopped for injuries or equipment failure. When points are being awarded the clock will continue to run. Another rule proposal up for debate and vote; will be to call a match a mismatch when one player is ahead by more than 5 consecutively scored points. The second reading of this proposal will be made at our NEB pone conference meeting scheduled for late September. AAU Profiles Miles Mutschler Miles, how did you like your first tournament? It was Awesome! Miles Mutschler is your typical second grader boy who has been involved in Kung Fu for just one year. He likes video games, swimming, and last year became a serious student of Kung Fu. His parents say he has been eating and breathing Kung Fu over this past year. This devotion has shown up in his class participation he shows skills equal to an intermediate level competitor. His gold medal performance in his first tournament shows he has plenty of promise, below is a beginner s view on his impression of a tournament. What did you like the most about the tournament? The forms, the abilities of the older and advanced competitors, the medals, and the weapons were all really cool. What did you like least? Waiting but there were things to do! Do you want to go to next years national AAU Championships? Yes most definitely How do you think Kung Fu helps you? I feel better about myself knowing all I have to do is try my best and people will help you and show you more.
Miles is one of those students that you know as an instructor can achieve much higher things in Kung Fu. As his leadership qualities develop he is sure to become one of the elite group of students we all enjoy teaching. Look out for Miles he is an up and coming AAU Star. Where in the World is the AAU Dragon? This year saw the start of a new AAU tradition the AAU Chinese Martial Arts Division has started. The AAU Dragon of Brushy Creek entered the arena leading the officials, coaches and competitors into the rings manned by competitors from all over the nation. Setting a new precedent for the next AAU National Tournament the Dragon will travel and be used by the school hosting where the next National Tournament will be held to lead next years competitors into the ring! Where will the AAU Dragon show up next? Where ever it does show up, will be the location for the next National Tournament. Keep your eyes open for where the Dragon turns up next! 2009 AAU National Championship Results 2009 AAU NATIONALS 5-7 yrs Northern Tradional Beginner Brycen Craig Austin, TX 7.1 7.2 7.3 21.6 1st Skylar Schmidt Round Rock,TX 7 7.1 7.2 31.3 2nd Northern Traditional Intermediate Asti Raamann Round Rock,TX 8.2 8.1 8 24.3 1st Kendall Steele Round Rock,TX 8 7.9 8 23.9 2nd Wu Shu Beginner Brycen Craig Austin,TX 7.1 7.1 7.1 21.3 1st Ellis Krause Round Rock, TX 7 7.2 7 21.2 2nd Rhys Davey Round Rock, TX 7 7 7.1 21.1 3rd Wu Shu Intermediate Asti Raamann Round Rock, TX 8.1 8.1 8.1 24.3 1st Kendall Steele Round Rock, TX 7.9 8 8 23.9 2nd Traditional Staff Beginner Spear Intermediate Asti Raamann Round Rock, TX 7.6 7.6 7.8 23 1st Straight Sword Intermediate Asti Raamann Round Rock, TX 8..0 7.8 7.9 23.7 1st Traditional Staff Intermediate Asti Raamann Round Rock, TX 7.5 7.5 7.5 22.5 1st Girls Shuai Chiao 5-7 Asti Raamann Round Rock, TX 1st 1st
