Perth Game Fishing Club Inc Postal Address: PO Box 57 North Beach 6920 President: Ben Weston 0419 777720 Perth Game Fishing Club 2014 www.pgfc.com.au contact@pgfc.com.au 16 th September 2014 It has been a long time between Hook-Up Newsletters, the last issue being on 5 th July. In the meantime there has been a lot of club activity and there is a busy period coming up between now and Christmas. Some of the items covered in this edition Informative social night at MAAC Recapture of a tagged salmon Another successful social night in September A chance to visit Ashmore Reef Social Day on Saturday 4th October Sailfish - Kuala Rompin Change of date and venue for Presentation Night Big changes for the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series in 2015 Membership renewals Recognition of one of our lady anglers Last event of the Grand Prix Series on 21st September A very interesting boat for sale Club Championship and Grand Prix scores are close in the run up to the year end An endorsement of one of our major sponsors Strike magazine being prepared. Social Nights A couple of very successful social nights have passed since the last issue of Hook- Up. PGFC members were the guests of the very hospitable Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club on August 5 th. We were delighted to have Tony Antenucci make a comprehensive presentation on deep dropping particularly relevant to the waters near and over the conntinental shelf. None of the 120 or so attendees went away from the evening without a good understanding of equipment and techniques and many were fired up to pursue some of the excellent table fish that can be caught locally using these techniques. The Marmion clubs facilities are excellent for putting on a presenation such as this. Ben Weston treated us all to superbly smoked yellowfin tuna courtesy of Smiddy at The Smokeshack which was followed by a bbq in the excellent facilities that MAAC enjoys. Thanks to all PGFC members who made the effort to come along, the MAAC members who were so welcoming and to Geoff Kirk, MAAC s President and member of PGFC for putting it all together. We plan to reciprocate MAAC's welcome with PGFC hosting them next August at RPYC Fremantle. Ashmore Reef Fishing Sarah and I have two spots booked with Nomad Sportfishing charters for their Ashmore reef trip from November 22 to 29 this year. We are now unable to go, but we thought it would be worth mentioning it to club members if they are interested. Nomad is going to try and fill the spots but if we can find someone who wants to go then the spots are theirs. If they wish to know more they can contact us and we can let them know more details, and put them in contact with Nomad. Regards, Shane Anderson and Sarah Coleman 0407003453 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 2

The September Social Night held at RPYC Annex featured a video presentation brought back from the 55 th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament held in late July out of Maui. While fish were not plentiful this year, the team did well and, PGFC Crew from Left: John Prince, Peter Maier, not Aaron Womersley, Dave Thomson and Ian McCarthy. suprisingly, enjoyed Below Peter Maier 118.1 lb yellowfin tuna on 50lb tackle themselves. The social night itself was a success with some 35members and guests turning out. For the first time the club raffled a Flight Experience Flight Simulator award, one of several that have been aquired. These are a real experience sitting in the left hand seat of a 737-800 and taking off and landing in several of many cities around the world. Clint Wyld, only a member since January took off the prize. We look forward to learning of his experience. 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 3

City Beach Builders Grand Prix Round 10 The penultimate competition in the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Seres was run on August 17 th. With only the major placing to be decided and unpleasnt conditions forecast only a few boats participated. Striker went wide of Mindarie hoping for the elusive yellowfin tuna, the other boats plied the shallow reefs north of Garden Island and the south side of Rottnest securing salmon and tailor. Boat scores for the day were: Deeper Still 30, Rock N Roll 25 and Striker 5. Angler scores were wider with two ladies, Kris Koenig scoring 25 and Lisa Powel 20. Men s scores were Tim Carson 25, Brian Arnett 20 and Ian Chapman tying with Rick Ashton on 16. Round 11 The final of the series will be run on Sunday 21 st September. Annual aggregate scores and awards will be announced at the Presentation Night on 18 th October. 2015 Series Changes are afoot for the 3 rd consecutive season of events sponsored by Brian Connor s City Beach Builders. The primary purpose of changes is encouragement of participation and greater enjoyment by all members of the club. To this end there will be changes to many events, with themes such as tackle and species. Opening Weekend in November will emphasise social interaction and the CBB events in December and March will each be held over two days. Scores from the Opening weekend, Shimano WA Open and Marlin Cup will not be included in the CBB GP Series scores. Presentation Night The 2014 Presentation Night has had a change of venue and dates due to circumstances beyond the club s control. Now to be held at the newly built Bridge at Fremantle Sailing Club on Saturday 18 th October, the evening promises to be excellent one with recognition of club members who have won awards in the annual Club Championships and the City Beach Builders grand Prix Series. As well there are to be presentations to sponsors who have supported the club through the 2014 season, and last but not least recognition of the club s five Life Members. Tables are available for either 8 or 10 guests and members are encouraged to set up a table under their boat name. Not able to make up a table, no problems, the organisers will fit you in with a compatible group. Invitations will be out soon, so start getting your group together. Bookings are limited to 120 so get in soon. 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 5

North Port Marine A comment on unusual service from Committee member Toby Astill As fishermen, we had a big problem with our boat. Although Boston Whaler are great fishing boats, the smaller models have a major design fault for the keen angler - no bait board option! OK, so this is a problem that should be easily fixed by the imaginative DIY type person but after 2 years and various configurations of failed bait boards, it was time to do something properly. This is when I saw a beautiful Reelax bait board with rod holders on sale at Blue Water Tackle and I knew it would look great on the boat. The problem I now had was fixing it exactly where I wanted it on the boat. This was going to require a custom made mount and some degree of forward thinking, so I trawled the net for someone who could do the job for me. However, it seemed to be very difficult for anyone to commit to doing the job and, moreover, it appeared that no one particularly wanted the job. Eventually, I decided to give Northport Marine a call although I knew they did big jobs and I assumed that this small job would be something they would not want to take on. I made the call and was given the contact details for a guy called Bart. I called him and found out he was currently working on a boat up in Exmouth doing some major repair work. He told me he would be back in a week and would come and see me when he arrived back. He did. He came out to the boat park to meet me, and I showed him the boat and the bait board and where I wanted it. He took out his note pad and tape measure, made a sketch and said, Would you like it in stainless steel or aluminium? He then went through the pros and cons of each and I opted for the aluminium. He gave me a price and I instructed him to go ahead with the job. How long it will it take? I asked. Oh, it will be ready for you tomorrow, said Bart. My jaw dropped in disbelief. Someone a tradesman, in WA was going to commit to a timeframe and deliver on time and that timeframe was 24 hours?! I laughed and said, OK then, I ll swing by tomorrow and pick it up. At this point I was thinking, "I will go there tomorrow, Bart will have left the company, the job details will have been lost etc. etc." Blow me down, when I arrived at their workshop in North Fremantle the very next day, the custom made post was waiting for me in reception with a complimentary bag of stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers for fitting. The end result was perfect and I was one very happy fisherman. From now on, I will always make the first call to North Port Marine. 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 6

Kuala Rompin From Gary Barnard I have been in India for about the last month touring around so on the way home just HAD to stop off at Kuala Rompin for a couple of days fishing. (Booked about 9 months ago). Well if someone had told me before I went that the fishing there was incredible I would have treated it with some scepticism.it was more than incredible it just blew me away so forgive my probable overuse of superlatives. I decided to take the whole boat myself to give the maximum opportunity..in two days fishing we raised about 30 fish, hooked up 25 and landed 17. By the end of two days I was absolutely knackered and all the fish were quickly dealt with and happily returned to the deep by an expert crew and guide. The fish pictured were about the average and the largest caught the width of the boat was 8ft 9in wide so you can see the large one was not a bad fish! They work the birds to find the approximate location of the fish, not a feeding frenzy but just usually about 4 or 5 birds following along waiting to pick up a scrap, then they float out a livey under a small balloon and just wait. There were several occasions where we were one of 3 or 4 boats in an area and 2 or 3 of them would get a hook up at the same time! The fish life there must be huge. Each stop we made we would put in the Sabiki to keep replenishing the live bait and there were always multiple hookups from the bottom of slimy mackerel, yakkas or whatever. the whole ocean bottom must be covered in fish! No wonder there are plenty of sails. The bottom is featureless, sandy for hundreds of miles and about 100ft deep. So all in all a fantastic couple of days fishing, one of those times that keeps us coming back and forgetting the times you come home empty handed. If anyone would like the contacts or information regarding this area would be more than happy to pass it on, I intend to go back next October. By the way I am between boats again so am looking to crew up with others if needed and happy to share XXX's. 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 7

A legal whale capture Beluga One We received this interesting email just after the last Hook-Up was published. David Pleysier is a well-known builder of fine game fishing boats. The story that follows is about his developmental boat called Beluga One, and has been reproduced in its entirety. I would very much appreciate it if you could take the time to read the following instead of consigning it to junk mail, as this project represents the past 10 years of my life. My name is David Pleysier I am a boat builder by trade, now retired, we have for sale a 29ft prototype sport fishing vessel on a Duralum aluminium boat trailer. The boat is constructed from core epoxy composite and was designed as a prototype to develop a propulsion system which would enable directional control whilst going in reverse with a single fixed propeller/engine, a necessity for any serious sport fisherman. The system has been tested and it achieved the function it was designed for but needs fine tuning to be 100% affective, unfortunately no further funding is available to complete the project and it is therefore reluctantly offered for sale as is where is in Munster WA. The boat and all equipment is near new having only done approximately 6 hours of testing, the engine is a 315hp Yanmar diesel, steering is hydraulic/electric controlled by a joystick, large hydraulic trim tabs are recessed into the hull for total control in all sea and load conditions. There is no interior fit out, the hull is faired and primed, the deck and superstructure are primed but not faired. It is essentially a blank canvass to be completed by a serious sport fishing person. If unsure as to my qualifications please type in your internet browser David Pleysier the Boat builder it refers you to an article by Peter Webster of F&B (Fisherman & Boat owner) in 2008. I was also the builder of PANNAWONICA, Sir Garrick Agnew s Sport fishing Boat back in 1970. If you think this could be of benefit to your members please feel free to forward this to them. My sincerest thanks, David Pleysier MOB: 0408743103 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 11

Salmon recapture This year s salmon run in the metro area has been one of the best in many years and has offered light tackle exponents the chance to have a lot of fun and to accrue club championship points. At the end of last month Wayne van Uden fishing on Rhyss Whittred s Ashram caught a nice salmon around Rowboat Rock, not far from the launching ramp at CPBA Woodman Point facility. It already had a freshly positioned NSW DPI tag in its shoulder so all the details were noted, the fish weighed, measured and released without retagging. Of course there is a happy ending, the salmon in question was originally tagged by Kris Koenig, had been at liberty for just 14 days and had moved less than a mile, lucky fish. On recapture it was a healthy 72cm and 3.68kg. Angler Recognition In 2013 Megan Schukowsky and partner Clint Wyld chartered Josh Bruynzeel s OnStrike from Exmouth for a couple of days bottom bouncing, what they in fact caught were 8 sailfish. Both immediately joined PGFC. Whetting their appetites for game fishing, Megan and Clint then competed in the AIBT which was held in Exmouth in 2014, enabling them to again charter with Josh and OnStrike and landing Megan her first marlin. Clint contacted IGFA without Megan s knowledge to obtain the Catch Certificate which will take pride of place next to their trophies for Australian International Billfish Tournament Overall Runner-up 2014 and Australian International Billfish Tournament Runner-up Tag and Release Marlin 2014 Any member who would like one of the stunningly presented certificates should contact IGFA. http://www.igfa.org/fish/catch-certificates.aspx 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 12

Membership and Renewals Membership for 2014 lags just two members behind the record of 361 for 2013. The club would dearly like to see that record broken again, so anyone who has a friend or family membr who woould like to join up before 30 th September, download a membership application form from http://www.pgfc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/membership-application-form- 14-04-22.pdf and get them joined up. It s that time of the year again when you will be receiving renewal notices in the mail. This will be the 8 th year when there has been no increase in fees. Think about taking out a 5 year membership because the fees must go up soon! WAGFA RED Fund A change on the renewal for this year is that instead of being asked to contribute to the WAGFA Fighting Fund you will be asked to donate to the WAGFA RED Fund. Different name but a similar purpose. The Fighting Fund was set up 13 years ago for the purpose of creating a bank to use when it was needed to counter the efforts of governments and others who were unreasonably planning to withdraw access rights to recreational and in particular game fishers. The most recent of these was the Commonwealth Marine Reserves plan that was set aside with the change of government in 2013. RED in this case is the acronym for Research, Education and Development. The fund is administered by WAGFA for the benefit of the members of all WAGFA affiliated clubs. Research projects that are currently in mind are firstly, the alternatives to tagging small species, and secondly, examining the possibility of a voluntary log book sytem to give better catch per unit effort data. There is plenty of scope for education projects and one that has progressed considerably this year is an online program for familiarisation of those new to game fishing so that they can enjoy the sport understanding the why s and wherefore s of equipmennt, techniques and rules. Development broadly slots in where the Fighting Fund leaves off, in that its focus for the time being is continuation and expansion of relationships with stakeholders at all levels and particularly where the rights of game fishers are threatened or can be enhanced. Funds are spent very cautiously and only after consideration of the 8 person WAGFA Management Committee on which PGFC is strongly represented. You are encouraged to continue to contribute to this fund. Annual General Meeting The 2014 AGM is to be held at RPYC Annex on 11 th November - formal noties wil be sent to all voting members, and the club will be seeking nominations for all committee positions. Here is a chance to have a say in the running of your club and working with a like minded team of volunteers who have successfully got the club to where it is. You can also develop skills you didn t know you had! Interested? Contact any of the current committee to discuss where you might fit in. 16 th September 2014 Hook-Up Page 13
