National Hereford Queen Qualifications, Rules and General Information The following are rules and regulations that govern the National Hereford Queen Contest. There are three sections to this document; qualifications, rules and general information. Qualifications Contestant must be at least 16 years old and not have reached 22 years of age by January 1 of the year that she will represent her state at the Junior National Expo as Queen Must be single, never married, no children Membership requirements before Sept 1 deadline for all documents to be submitted to for National Hereford Queen Contest Must be a member of the National Junior Hereford Association Must be a daughter or granddaughter of a Hereford breeder who is a member of the AHA or must own a Hereford animal Family member must be member of NHW by August 10 Must have been designated a State Polled or Horned Hereford Queen May serve as her state association queen for a second year May compete for National Hereford Queen two years providing she did not win the National Hereford Queen if approved by her state qutitle and she has the approval of her state A candidate may not be a state or national queen/princess for another breed Candidates may not be serving on the National Junior Board of Directors and National Queen in the same year The sponsoring state organization must have at least one National Hereford Women member with their national dues paid by August 10 of that there state queen is competing for National Hereford Queen Candidate must complete the Master of Beef Advocacy Program sponsored 1

by the Beef Check-off Program by the National Hereford Queen contest application deadline of the National Queen Competition. Rules A letter of sponsorship from each state organization must be submitted to the National Hereford Queen Chairman, stating the intentions to submit the state queen as a candidate for the National Hereford Queen contest. This letter should be submitted as soon as the state Hereford Queen has been selected and no later than July 5 of said year. If the state queen decides to run for the National Hereford Queen the sponsor state needs to send a check of $100 along with the form with the State Queen Assessment form to National Hereford Queen Committee Chairperson Carol Priefert, 9B Colonial Crest Drive, Lancaster PA 17601. One original plus three copies of a personal resume submitted by each contestant, two letters of recommendation (not a relative), and the state queen chairman assessment must be sent directly to the National Hereford Queen Chairman by September 1 or earlier. All must be typed. Official pictures must be included with the resume. Official Pictures: Four colored prints no smaller than 3 1 2 by 5 and no larger than 5 by 7. Portrait is to be taken in official summer outfit with banner. No small school pictures will be accepted. Pictures will be permanently placed National Hereford Women NHW website and may be used on the NHW Facebook page. Judging will be based on general appearance, ability to communicate, general knowledge of the breed and beef cattle industry, personality and poise. A state queen may not attend a function outside their elected area in official state queen capacity unless personally invited by the host state or the National Hereford Women Queen Committee. Shows she may be invited to are the Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg, PA, Western Nugget in Reno, NV, North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY and National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. The National Hereford Queen, 1 st, 2 nd and Miss Congeniality will be crowned during the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, Mo. Official state banner must have the words Hereford on the banner. This banner will be worn at all official events during the American Royal Show weekend except the official interview session with the judges. Only the National Hereford Queen will wear white or off-white. o State Queens if attending a National Show, outfit will consist of a blazer and skirt of wool, wool blend, gabardine or other appropriate material 2

boots, tiara, gloves and banner (no hat). Skirt is to be one to three inches from the ground and needs to cover the tops of the boots when sitting. Blouse is to be of no see through material. No white, off white or light tan blazer and skirt may be worn. o At the Junior National Hereford Exp, Queens shall be dressed in a National Hereford Queen Rules skirt, blouse with sleeves, boots, tiara (no hat) and banner at the events or activities designed as Dress or Queen Events. Skirt is to be one to three inches from the ground and needs to cover the tops of the boots when sitting. Blouse is to be of no see through material. No white, off white or light tan blazer and skirt may be worn. o See Official State Queen Outfit Guidelines for further details. No visible tattoos, no nose jewelry or other visible body piercings. The National Hereford Queen is required to attend the Junior National Expo, National Western Stock Show and Sale in Denver, Colorado, and the American Royal Livestock Show and Sale during her reign. She is encouraged to attend other National Hereford Shows as her schedule permits. Each state queen MUST attend the Junior National Expo and is expected to attend the American Royal Livestock Show, Kansas City, Mo. If a state does not have a state queen and has a princess at least 15 years of age. The state queen coordinator may approve a princess to be the state representative at the JNHE. The National Hereford Queen and state queens are responsible for making their own room reservations at shows and sales. The National Hereford Queen and state queens may show at the Junior National Hereford Expo Show. The National Hereford Queen and state queens may not show at the American Royal Livestock Show. They may enter cattle, but may not be involved in the care and exhibiting of the animals at the American Royal Livestock Show. The National Hereford Queen may enter cattle at the other National Shows. However, if she appears at the show and participates as the National Hereford Queen (ring, handing out ribbons, pictures, etc.) She may not participate in the exhibiting of the animals on show day. Any deviation from the expected behavior of the National Hereford Queen and candidates such as pregnancy, felony violation of the law, etc. will result 3

in disqualification from the program. Media interviews will be conducted with a National Hereford Women director present. The National Hereford Queen and state queens will not consume alcohol, use tobacco or drugs, or use obscene language while serving in any official capacity as queen. Each state queen will sign and return the conduct agreement to the National Queen Chairman before the Junior National Hereford Expo. This conduct agreement needs to be in place before a state queen can attend a show outside her home state. 4

GENERAL INFORMATION Each state queen contestant and the National Hereford Queen will be chaperoned at all times by her parents or guardian or person designated by the Queen s parent(s) or guardian. The National Hereford Queen will wear two special outfits. The summer outfit will consist of a white skirt and white blouse, white boots, national banner and crown. The winter outfit will consist of a white suit and white blouse, white boots, white gloves, national banner and crown. The she will keep the crown. The national banner will be passed on to subsequent National Hereford Queens. The National Hereford Queen will receive financial assistance from NHW for certain expenses incurred in the course of her duties. Itemized receipts are to be sent to the National Hereford Women Queen Chairman in a timely manner (at least quarterly). The NHW Queen Chairman will review, approve and then send the request to the NHW Treasurer for payment of approved expenses. o $100.00 towards a pair of white Roper boots o $200.00 for Suit Queen may make or purchase o $50.00 for Photo Taken as soon as possible Travel Expenses as follows: o A maximum of $700.00 for travel expenses to the National Junior Hereford Expo o Up to $700.00 for the Denver National Show and Sale. o Up to $450.00 for each of the following shows American Royal, NAILE, Reno, Keystone National or Ft. Worth Stock Show o Additionally up to $700.00 for actual expenses, above all National Hereford Queen designated donation The National Hereford Queen will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship upon the completion of one college, technical school, or trade school semester following the completion of her reign. The queen will be responsible for submitting proof of completion to the National Queen Chairman. This proof must be submitted within four years of the completion of reign. The first runner-up shall receive a plaque and a $300.00 scholarship. Second Runner-up will receive a plaque and $250.00 scholarship. Miss Congeniality shall receive a plaque and a $200.00 scholarship. The National Queen may be invited and sponsored by state Hereford Association or individual breeders to attend show and sales. She must arrange in advance, with the National Queen Chairman regarding the invitation and financing of her 5

attendance. 6
