The Golden Flashes, which recorded a program-best sixth-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Finals, are making their 14th Championship appearance and 11th in the past 20 years. Championship Format The 30 teams with compete head-to-head in 54-holes of stroke play over three days starting on Tuesday, June 1. After the three rounds are complete, an individual medalist will be crowned and the top eight teams will advanced to a single elimination match-play bracket with 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. Teams will be seeded in order of their stroke play finish. Match-play quarterfinals start on Friday, June 4 with the semifinals on June 5 and championship match on June 6. Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com. Participating Teams Of the 30-teams in the 2010 NCAA Championship, Kent State is one of 22 that has qualified in two of the past three years. The Golden Flashes are seeded 16th. KSU Line-Up Brett Cairns, Isaac Charette, John Hahn, Mackenzie Hughes and Kevin Miller. The Golden Flashes will carry the same line-up that tied for first at the East Regional and also walked away with a 22-stroke victory at the MAC Championship. Juniors John Hahn and Brett Cairns were also in the lineup for Kent State during the 2008 NCAA Championship run. An All-American last season, Hahn finished tied for eighth at the East Regional for his second straight top 10 regional showing. He leads the team with a 72.1 scoring average and nine top 20 finishes this season. Hahn s 72.4 career average is the second lowest in school history behind only current PGA pro Ben Curtis. In 2008 the two-time MAC Golfer of the Year tied for 33rd with a 305 (83-71-73-78). Cairns was named the MAC Golfer of the Year this season after posting two wins and a 72.2 scoring average. In addition to his two victories, the Courtland, Ontario product recorded six top 10 finishes and had 19 rounds of par or better. With three straight rounds of 70, he finished tied for 21st with an even par 210 at The Course at Yale last weekend. Earlier this spring in the second round of the Aggie Invitational, he shot a 62 (-10) which is tied for the lowest round in the nation this season. He is ranked No 74 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings. Cairns tied for 43rd in 2008 with a 307 (78-75-80-74). Sophomore Mackenzie Hughes is third on the team with a The Field 1. Oregon 2. He tied for 24th at the East Regional with a one-over 211 (71-68-72). Making the Golden Flashes biggest impact last weekend was freshman Kevin Miller. Miller had the best showing of his career tying for fourth place to lead the team. The 2010 MAC Freshman of the Year carded a four-under 206 (67-68-71) including a chip-in birdie on KSU s final hole of the tournament that gave the Golden Flashes a share of the regional title. In eight spring events he has recorded a 73.4 scoring average. Another freshman, Isaac Charette rounds out the line-up. Charette has played in 22 rounds covering seven events this season. 1

The course Nestled at the foot of the White Oak Mountains The Honors Course is a Pete Dye Design that will feature a par 72, 7,395-yard layout for the NCAA Championship. The last time The Honors hosted in 1996, Arizona State won the team title while and Tiger Woods of Stanford claimed medalist honors despite shooting an 80 in the final round. Junior John Hahn is familiar with the course. The summer before his freshman season at Kent State, Hahn participated in the 2007 Canon Cup, a AJGA all-star event that put East vs. West (divided by the Mississippi River) up against each other in a team match play format. Kent State NCAA Championship History The 2010 season marks the 23rd time Kent State has qualified for NCAA play. The Golden Flashes are making their 14th appearance at the NCAA Championship and second in the last three years. In their last visit in 2008, David Markle and current juniors Brett Cairns and John Hahn led the team to a program-best sixth-place finish at Purdue University s Kampen Course. With a 1204 team score over 72-holes, Kent State placed just 10 strokes back of national champion UCLA. Now a pro on the Canadian Tour, Markle tied for ninth on his way to earning All-American honors. Current PGA Tour member Ben Curtis and Nationwide Tour member Jon Mills, along with Danny Sahl, Brian Miller and Jonah Karzmer, led the Kent State program to a ninth-place finish at the 2000 Championship held at Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Okla. Sahl tied for 24th with a four-under 284 to pace the team. The Golden Flashes finished 13th at the 1994 Championship held at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Tex. behind the play of All-American Eric Frishette and current Ohio State head coach Donnie Darr, who each tied for 25th overall at even-par 288. Also representing KSU were current Nationwide tour members Brian DeCorso and Kevin Kraft along with Boo Blackman. Mills owns the top individual finish for Kent State shooting a six-under 282 and placing sixth in 2001 at the Duke University Golf Club after tying for 30th with Curtis in 2000. In 1990, Brian Bridges won the Ben Hogan Award and tied for 17th after shooting a two-over 290 at Innisbrook Resort in Tarpon Springs, Fla. The Forecast (From weather.com) Tuesday: Partly cloudy with a stray thunderstorm. Highs in the upper 80s. Wednesday: A few thunderstorms possible. Highs in the mid 80s. Thursday: Scattered thunderstorms possible. Highs in the mid 80s. Friday: Partly cloudy, chance of a thunderstorm. Highs in the mid 80s. Saturday: Partly cloudy, chance of a thunderstorm. Highs in the mid 80s. Sunday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 80s. Winning Streak Still Alive With a tie for first at the NCAA East Regional and the MAC Championship title the event before, the Golden Flashes have won their last two tournaments. Kent State is one of only three teams in the NCAA Championship field with a current two tournament winning streak. Washington won the West Regional also claimed the Pac-10 title in its previous tournament. Oklahoma State meanwhile won the Southeast Regional and the Big 12 tournament. In fact of the seven teams that won or tied for a regional title this year there are only three conferences represented (Mid-American, Big 12 and Pac 10). 2010 NCAA Regional Winners East Regional: Kent State (Mid-American) Texas (Big 12) South Central Regional: Texas Tech (Big 12) Central Regional: Stanford (Pac 10) Southeast Regional: Oklahoma State (Big 12) Southwest Regional: Oregon (Pac 10) West Regional: Washington (Pac 10) Cairns owns nation s Lowest Round In the second round of the Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M at the Traditions Course April 17 & 18 Kent State junior Brett Cairns fired a school-record 10-under 62. Cairns 62 helped vault him to an eighth place finish in the nationally ranked field and stands tied for the lowest round in the nation this season. Following two straight pars to start the round, he would birdie six of his next seven holes with only a bogey on No. 16 in between. At five-under thru 10 holes, Cairns knocked his second shot, three-wood from 247-yards out, on the par-five third to within about four-feet of the pin. The ensuing putt pushed him to seven-under before two more birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 had him down to nine-under and on pace to match Ryan Yip s KSU record of 63 set in the first round of the 2005 Mid-American Conference Championship. But Cairns was not in the mood for sharing as he tapped in his ninth birdie of the round on his final hole, the par five tenth. KSU 54-hole Record goes Down at NCAA East Regional Not only did Kent State tie for the third regional title in school history last weekend, the Golden Flashes also put together the lowest 54-hole team score in school history. With an 835 (277-278-280) over three rounds the 2009-10 squad bested the 836 shot by the 1999-2000 team at the Taylor Made Red River Classic. Fourth Youngest Team in the Field With two juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen, Kent State s quintet makes up the fourth youngest lineup in the NCAA Championship field. Youngest Line-ups in the 2010 NCAA Championship 1. UCLA 2 Sophomores 3 Freshmen 2. USC 1 Junior 1 Sophomore 3 Freshmen 3. Cal 2 Juniors 3 Freshmen 4. Kent State 2 Juniors 1 Sophomore 2 Freshmen 5. Baylor 2 Juniors 2 Sophomore 1 Freshman Hahn 2009 Western amateur Champ John Hahn capped off his summer of 2009 by winning the prestigious 107th Western Amateur. Held Aug. 3-8 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill. this past year, Hahn became just the third Ohioian ever to win the event and joined an impressive honor roll of champions that includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard, Chirs DiMarco and Francis Ouimet. After shooting a two-over, 286 (74-72-67-73) in stroke play Hahn won a playoff with Adam Long of Duke just to advance to the 16-man match-play bracket. He then defeated stroke-play champion Chen-Tsung Pan 1-up in the first round of match-play, before dispatching Byeong-Hun An 5-and-3 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals had Hahn matched up against Bud Cauley of Alabama, who Hahn tied for third with at the 2009 NCAA Central Regional. Kent State s shining star came through and never trailed in a 2-and-1 victory over the Crimson Tide All-American. In the final Hahn was exceptional as he posted a 3-and-2 win over Illinois Zach Barlow. He never trailed after the opening hole and took control by winning four holes in a row starting at No. 3. At the 16th, Hahn rolled his 25-foot birdie try to 2 1/2 feet and after Barlow missed his 12-foot birdie putt, Hahn tapped in for the victory. One of 32 Players to Compete in the All-American Classic In late November, Hahn was one of 32 players in the nation selected to play in the Western Refining All- American Classic. He shot a six-under 207 (67-72-68) to finish in eighth place at the tournament which consisted of all the returning All-Americans from 2008-09. 19 of the 32 playing in the field will be playing this week. 2
