The Amgen Tour of California The inaugural 2006 Amgen Tour of California is a Tour de France-style, week-long, eight-stage bicycle race through California This international bicycle stage race will be the focal point of cultural festivals and recreational events in cities and towns across the state It will become one of the nation s biggest and most recognized annual special events Unlike most U.S. professional sports, bicycle racing and the Amgen Tour of California allows spectators a close and intimate fan experience Stage Four, the longest of the Tour, will begin on Cannery Row in Monterey and race 141 miles down Highway One to San Luis Obispo This will attract cycling fans from around the world to the Monterey Peninsula as well as sports fans from the local community Monterey and its partners in the event will be featured in that night s ESPN2 and European daily coverage of the event
