Memphis aims to earn a series split of the four-game set and avoid its first series loss since April 18-21 at Colorado Springs. Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Prospect righthander Jack Flaherty makes his second Triple-A start this evening against the Baby Cakes. Flaherty impressed in his Memphis debut, allowing only two runs on five hits in six innings for a quality start. He began the season with Double-A Springfield where he was 7-2 with a 1.42 ERA in 10 starts at the time of his promotion. Flaherty was named the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month in April after compiling a 4-0 mark and a 0.96 ERA. New Orleans sends Stephen Fife to the mound in hopes of a series victory. Fife will be making his 12th start of the year after seeing a personal three-game win streak come to an end in his last outing. At Round Rock, Fife gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings of work, his shortest start since May 4. Fife faced Memphis in his first start of the year, yielding a season-high five runs on eight hits in five innings, resulting in a no-decision. SCHEDULE WITH NEW ORLEANS: Memphis and New Orleans meet for the second time this year after opening the season with a five-game set. The Redbirds took four of five from the Cakes, including two last at-bat wins. This is the final trip to New Orleans for Memphis this season, but the Baby Cakes come to AutoZone Park for eight more matchups. With a win today, Memphis can tie the franchise record for wins in a year at New Orleans (6-2, 1999). BIRD BITES THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (June 8, 2003): 3B Scott Seabol, 1B John Gall, and C Willie Morales each hit two-run home runs in the Redbirds 10-4 blowout win at Salt Lake. RHP Dan Haren earned his first Triple-A win, allowing two runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: A pair of two-out, two-run homers doomed the Redbirds as they lost a back-and-forth affair to the Baby Cakes, 5-4, on Wednesday. Miguel Socolovich allowed the game-winning dinger with two outs in the eighth. Josh Zeid tossed his second straight quality start, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Patrick Wisdom hit his 10th homer of the season in the seventh inning. STREAK RESISTENT: Since winning a franchise-record 11 games in a row from April 28 - May 8 to improve to 21-11, the Redbirds have played about.500 baseball. Memphis is 14-13 since May 9, winning no more than three games in a row. However, the Redbirds have lost back-to-back on only three occasions. Memphis has not lost three in a row since April 24-27, which was followed by the winning streak. START ME UP: Memphis prospect-laden rotation has rounded into form nicely, allowing three runs or fewer in 11 straight games. In the stretch, Redbird starters have tossed seven quality starts and compiled a 2.83 ERA (20 ER in 63.2 IP). During the 11 games, opponents are hitting.217 (50- for-230) vs Memphis starters. The starters season-long ERA has dropped from 4.28 to 3.98 during the stretch. LOCK IT DOWN: Yesterday s loss marked the first time since May 29 that the Memphis bullpen allowed multiple earned runs in a game, a stretch of seven games. Still though, the BADER: Four-game hitting streak snapped yesterday (9-for-18,.500, 2 2B, 2 R, 7 RBI); Leads team with 7 3+ hit-games CALDWELL: Promoted to Memphis last Monday after hitting.245 with seven home runs in Double-A Springfield CUNNINGHAM: Tied for third in the league in on-base percentage (.418); Leads team with 27 walks and 10 HBP GRICHUK: Transferred to Memphis today after an option from St. Louis and one game with High-A Palm Beach KELLY: Hit.381 (32-for-84, 7 2B, 3 HR, 16 R, 15 RBI) in the month of May, second-best in the PCL MARTINI: Has scored 24 runs in 27 games for Memphis, tied for 4th-most in the PCL since his promotion on May 6 RAVELO: Hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games (22-for-56,.393, 5 2B, 2 HR, 12 R, 11 RBI); 15-game hit streak from 5/9-6/3 ROSARIO: Has accrued nine RBI in his last eight games after none in his first 11 appearances TOVAR: Hit.302 (19-for-63, 2B, 11 R, 3 RBI) in May after batting.217 in April (13-for-60, 3 2B, 6 R, 5 RBI) VALERA: 5-for-30 (.167) in his last 10 games with five strikeouts (12 K s in first 37 games this season) VOIT: Leads league with 19 doubles, fifth in the circuit in on-base percentage (.407) WISDOM: 4-for-30 (.133) in his last eight games; Hit first home run since May 22 yesterday (12 games between) UPCOMING GAMES AND PROBABLE PITCHERS DATE TIME (CT) OPPONENT REDBIRDS STARTER OPPONENT STARTER Fri. Birds have received significant contributions from the bullpen recently. Memphis relievers allowed only two baserunners in the series against Omaha, combining for eight scoreless, hitless innings (8.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K). In the last 12 games, the relief corps has given up just eight runs on 22 hits, striking out 32 and walking 10 in 36.1 innings of relief (1.98 ERA). NOTHING FOR YOU: Needless to say, the Redbirds pitching staff as a whole has turned the corner recently. Memphis has held its opponent to three runs or less in eight of the last 11 games, going 6-5 in the stretch. The Redbirds have yielded only 28 earned runs in the last 97 innings pitched (2.60 ERA), vaulting to fourth in the league in ERA (3.98). NEED A HANDFUL: The five-run threshold has been the key mark for Memphis this year as the Birds are 25-1 when scoring at least five runs in a game this year. Memphis has dropped back-to-back games when scoring four runs, falling to 10-23 when held to four tallies or fewer. IN A PINCH: After starting the year by going 5-for- 24 (.208), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 11-for-theirlast-20 (.550) over the last 22 games, including a 6-for-9 mark in the last 10 games. Overall, pinchhitters are 16-for-44 (.364) on the season. Chad Huffman has been the primary contributor, hitting two pinch-hit homers and collecting seven RBI s. MEMPHIS MASHERS MIA: The Redbirds hit one homer yesterday, improving their season-long total to 62. However, Memphis fell to 24-10 on the year when hitting at least one home run. The Birds have dropped to fifth in the circuit standings in homers after leading the league for a majority of the first month-and-a-half. Memphis has had a knack to hit their homers in bunches, recording eight games this season with at least three homers. The Redbirds are still way ahead of their pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 62nd homer until game 80, which came on July 1. The pace, however, has slowed. After hitting 45 home runs in the first 37 games of the season (1.2 per game), Memphis has connected on just 17 dingers in the last 22 games (0.8 per game). STOP HITTING ME: Todd Cunningham was plunked again on Tuesday, continuing an interesting trend for Memphis hitters. The Birds have now been hit 42 times, which is far and away the most in the PCL (Round Rock, 26). Cunningham has now been hit 10 times this year, which is the most in the PCL. RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: The Redbirds are 25-for- 51 in steal attempts and have been picked off 12 times. The Redbirds are the only PCL team to have a success rate less than 50 percent, but have shown signs of life lately. After attempting just six stolen bases in the previous 19 contests, Memphis has attempted 10 steals in the last nine games and been successful in eight of the 10 tries. STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 38 runs in the first inning and 33 runs in the second inning of games, which are two of their most fruitful frames of the season. Memphis has scored first in 35 of its 59 games this season, which is second in the PCL (Iowa, 37). However, the Redbirds are just 22-13 overall in those contests, which is middle of the pack in the league. The Redbirds have scored the game s final run 28 times and are 21-7 (2nd in the PCL) in such games. AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple categories: - AVG: Voit (.320, 3rd), Kelly (.313, 4th), Martini (.292, 8th), & Bader (.291, 9th) - HR: Wisdom (9, t-2), Voit (8, t-4), & Bader (8, t-4) - RBI: Voit (34, t-1), Wisdom (34, t-1), & Martini (32, t-3) - Wins: Flaherty (7, t-1) & Weaver (6, t-3) - ERA: Flaherty (1.56, 2nd) - Saves: Herget (5, t-2) - Strikeouts: Flaherty (67, 1st) WRAPPING UP MAY: The Redbirds had a historic month of May, finishing with a 19-10 record, the best mark in the season s second month in franchise history (previously 18-10 twice). Memphis won 19 games in a month for the first time since August 2014 (20-11). The Birds bats came alive to a.295 team average, second in the PCL (Reno,.313). After hitting 29 dingers in April, Memphis hit 29 home runs again in May, its most in the month since 2013. On the mound, Memphis pitchers posted a 3.84 ERA, second in the PCL (Nashville, 3.38). The mark was nearly a full run better than what the club authored in April (4.54). Redbird starters had 13 quality starts in 29 games. MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES LONG TIME COMING: Chad Huffman had his contract purchased by St. Louis yesterday, returning to the Major Leagues for the first time since 2010. Huffman has appeared in 1,014 career MiLB games and also played two season in Japan during his 10- year career. He appeared in nine games with the Yankees and 2010 and had appeared in 515 Triple-A games in between MLB stints. A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: Ryan Sherriff has been one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 23 games. The southpaw has allowed runs in only five of his outings and is currently riding an 11.0-inning scoreless streak over his last eight appearances. Six of the 10 runs Sherriff has allowed this year came in one outing at Colorado Springs on April 19. Aside from that, Sherriff has a 1.50 ERA (4 ER/24 IP). SIMPLY THE BEST, PART 1: The PCL announced on Monday that Redbird starter Luke Weaver was voted the league s player of the month for May, becoming the first pitcher to win the award since June 2015. In May, Weaver led the circuit in wins (5) while placing second in ERA (2.19), innings pitched (37.0), and fewest runs (9) and walks allowed (6) (minimum 35.0 IP). He also ranked fourth in the circuit in strikeouts (37) and ninth in WHIP (1.00). SIMPLY THE BEST, THE SEQUEL: The St. Louis Cardinals on Monday named Carson Kelly the organization s minor league player of the month for May. Kelly hit.381 (32-for-84) in 22 games with seven doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI. He hit safely in 18 of 22 games, including 10 multi-hit games. Kelly ranked second in the PCL in average during May, and his.447 OBP was third-best in Triple-A. Kelly currently paces the PCL in games played by a catcher (40) and leads backstops with five double plays. He has thrown out eight of 29 would-be basestealers (27.6%), sixth-best in the circuit. PROSPECTS ON THE MOUND: With the addition of Jack Flaherty from Double-A Springfield Thursday, the Redbirds currently possess three of the top starting pitching prospects in the St. Louis organization (BA/MLB.com rank): Luke Weaver (#2/#3), Flaherty (#11/#5), and Marco Gonzales (#13/#19). All three were selected in the first round of their respective drafts: Gonzales (13th, 13), Weaver (27th, 14), Flaherty (34th, 14), and join Mike Mayers (93rd, 2013) as top 100 picks in the rotation. KEEPING THINGS ROSY: Reserve catcher Alberto Rosario has not let his sporadic playing time affect his time at the plate recently, turning into an RBI machine since mid-may. Starting on May 15, Rosario has only played in eight games, but has hit safely in seven of the contests (9-for-28,.321, 2B, 3 R, 9 RBI). Rosario did not have a multi-hit game or an RBI prior to this stretch but now has a pair of two-hit games and three multi-rbi outings, highlighted by three RBI against Omaha on Friday. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, eight of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Jack Flaherty (#11), Marco Gonzales (#13), Sam Tuivailala (#23), John Gant (#27) and Breyvic Valera (#29). THE ROSTER: Of the 25 players who comprise Memphis active roster, 21 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 13 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of MLB experience with 11 players combining for 613 games played. More than half of that MLB experience (328/613) comes from Randal Grichuk, who was added to the roster today.
