The Wildcats battled the Mavericks to a 2-2 draw on Nov. 25 behind Atte Tolvanen s 37-save effort and goals by Dominik Shine and Troy Loggins scored 35 seconds apart in the first period. Omaha blanked Northern Michigan, 2-0, the next night as Evan Weninger stopped 31 shots, including 19 in the third period. On Nov. 25, the Wildcats went into 3-on-3 overtime for only the second time in program history and for the first time on their home ice. Robbie Payne tapped a Shine rebound into an empty net with 8.3 seconds remaining in the second bonus frame to lift the Wildcats to the unofficial victory. The 2-2 draw snapped a five-game losing slide, but Northern Michigan remains winless in its past seven games. The Alaska-Anchorage/Northern Michigan Series 1-11-2 (0-6-2 WCHA) 1/9 Northern Michigan held Omaha to a single power-play goal during their series. The Mavericks entered the series converting on 35.3 percent of their power-play opportunities, 7 percent higher than second-place American International. Last season, the Wildcats only squared off against the Seawolves once. Northern Michigan earned the sweep, its first of the 2015-16 campaign, by winning the first game on Feb. 5, 3-2, and the second, 5-4. during a late man advantage to propel the Wildcats to victory. Shine (2g-1a) and Darren Nowick (3a) helped seal the sweep with three-point outings the next night. Northern Michigan last traveled to Anchorage on Nov. 21-22, 2014. Both games ended in a shutout. In the Wildcats 1-0 win on Nov. 21, Mathias Dahlstrom turned aside 13 shots, and Payne netted his first career game-winning goal. Olivier Mantha returned the favor the next night, making 28 saves to propel Alaska-Anchorage to a 4-0 victory. A quartet of seniors Shine (3g-4a), Gerard Hanson (1g-5a), Brock Maschmeyer (3g-1a) and Shane Sooth (1g-3a) are the leading point producers against the Seawolves on this year s team. No goaltenders on the roster have faced Alaska-Anchorage. Northern Michigan owns a four-game winning streak against the Seawolves dating back to Jan. 30, 2015. All four of those victories were scored at the Berry Events Center. Wildcat Penalty Kill Rebounds Against Nation s Best Power Play Entering its series with the Wildcats, Omaha owned the NCAA s best power play, which had converted on a whopping 35.3 percent of its opportunities. Notably, the Mavericks were seven percent more successful than second-place American International (28.3) and had scored at least two power-play goals in eight of their 12 games on the season, including five in a row. But the Northern Michigan penalty kill limited Omaha to a single power-play goal on nine opportunities during the series. That performance improved the Wildcats season penalty kill percentage to 74.7, moving them out of last place in the country. On Nov. 26, they held the Mavericks scoreless (0-for-4) on the man advantage. Omaha last failed to net at least one power-play goal during a 2-1 loss at Denver on March 5, 2016, going 0-for-3. Before Northern Michigan snapped their streak, the Mavericks had netted at least one power-play goal in 15-straight games dating back to March 11, 2016. The Next Time Out The Wildcats return to the Berry Events Center for this season s only series against Alabama-Huntsville. On Dec. 9, Northern Michigan will host a Toss Your Socks night as part of Rock Your Socks week in honor of long-time supporter Larry Heiskanen. Everyone is encouraged to wear their loud and crazy socks, and children in kindergarten through 12th grade who bring socks to donate to local charities will gain free admission. On Dec. 10, the Wildcats will hold their annual Teddy Bear toss. Game Day Information Radio: Every game, home and away, will be broadcast on 100.3 FM The Point and called by Dave Danis. Ice Chips By registering his fourth goal of the season in Northern Michigan s 2-2 tie against Omaha, Dominik Shine tied Robbie Payne and Darien Craighead for the team lead. He also took 15 of Northern Michigan s 63 shots on net during the weekend, setting a new career high with 10 during Nov. 25 s draw. Payne is the only Wildcat to have surpassed 10 points through the season s first 16 games, sitting in a tie for ninth in the WCHA with 12 (4g-8a). Gerard Hanson (3g-6a) is one point shy of the threshold while Zach Diamantoni (1g-7a) needs two more to reach it. Despite having his four-game point streak snapped by being held off the score sheet by Omaha, Philip Beaulieu remains among the WCHA s top point producing rookie blueliners. He is tied for fourth in points (7), tied for second in goals (2) and tied for sixth in assists (5). He also sits in a tie for 16th among all WCHA defensemen in points. Only 25 WCHA players, all defensemen, have blocked at least 20 shots this season. Northern Michigan boasts three of those players: Rylan Yaremko (6th, 32), Beaulieu (t-17th, 22) and Jordan Klimek (21st, 21). Two others, Brock Maschmeyer and Connor Frantti, are just one blocked shot shy of that plateau. With 18 blocked shots, Hanson remains the WCHA s forward leader. Only five forwards rank in the WCHA s top 50 in this statistical category. Payne joins Hanson in that select group; his 13 blocked shots has him in a two-way tie for 50th overall and alone in fifth among forwards. Atte Tolvanen made a season-high 37 saves in Nov. 25 s 2-2 tie. Overall, he turned aside 58 of 62 Omaha shots during the series, which improved his season save percentage to.904 from.898. The Wildcats suffered their fifth shutout loss of the season on Nov. 26. All five of those losses came by a 2-0 margin. Northern Michigan is one whitewashing shy of matching the single-season school record, set in 2014-15. Head Coach Walt Kyle Walt Kyle was named the second head hockey coach in Northern Michigan University history on June 13, 2002. Kyle, who has led the Wildcats to six 20-win seasons, entered the 2016-17 campaign with an overall record of 252-241-64. Kyle won his 200th career game on Jan. 4, 2012 with a 6-2 victory at St. Cloud State. He guided the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament during the 2009-10 campaign and to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Championship Tournament at Joe Louis Arena seven times. In addition to being the 2009-10 CCHA tournament runner-up, Northern Michigan won the third-place game three times ( 02-03, 07-08, 08-09). To date, the Wildcats have posted three 22-win seasons ( 02-03, 04-05, 05-06), a 21-win season ( 03-04) and two 20-win seasons ( 07-08, 09-10) in Kyle s tenure as head coach. Before he returned to Northern Michigan, Kyle held a number of professional coaching positions, including with the National Hockey League s New York Rangers and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, the American Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs and Baltimore Bandits, the International Hockey League s San Diego Gulls and the Western Hockey League s Seattle Thunderbirds. During that time, he coached NHL stars such as Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. Kyle was a two-time letterman at Northern Michigan after transferring from Boston College, netting 31 goals and 59 assists in 85 games. He also captained the 1980 and 1981 Wildcat squads that advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. He is the first player to score a goal in two NCAA tournaments for two different teams. After graduating from Northern Michigan in 1981 with a bachelor s degree in physical education, Kyle became a graduate assistant coach under Rick Comley. He was promoted to assistant coach in 1982 and held that position until 1992. When the Wildcats won their first NCAA Division I national title in 1991, Kyle was the top assistant coach. Heavily involved in USA Hockey, Kyle was named to the organization s International Council in June 2002. In 2006, he led the U.S. National Junior Team to a fourth-place finish at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in British Columbia. Kyle has also served as an assistant coach for multiple American squads at international tournaments. In 2001, he served under Lou Vairo on the fourthplace IIHF World Championship team. In 1992, he helped lead the U.S. Junior National Team to a bronze medal, which stands as the highest finish by an American squad under the World Junior Championship s original format. Kyle also coached the 1991 and 1993 U.S. Junior National Teams and the 1994 World Championships squad. Kyle has four children: daughters Erin and Quinn and sons Evan and Walt. Troy Loggins s first career strike proved to be the difference as Atte Tolvanen made 27 saves, including 14 in the final frame, to hold the Badgers at bay. The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into the game by capitalizing on a Wisconsin turnover. Maschmeyer one-timed the loose puck from just above the left circle, and Hanson flipped the booming rebound over Matt Jurusik s glove. After that, the teams traded power play goals before Loggins netted what proved to be the game-winning goal at 6:00 of the second period. Wisconsin appeared to net the equalizer early in the final frame when Cameron Hughes fired a shot on net that Tolvanen stopped, and the Badgers converged in the crease. Before the net was knocked off its moorings, Hanson pushed the loose puck underneath Tolvanen to keep it from crossing the line. Tolvanen - 3 10 13 Power Play: UW, 4-8; NMU, 1-5 Penalties: UW, 7-14; NMU, 9-29 Summary: Robbie Payne became the first Wildcat in 10 years to have a five-point night in a 6-5 loss to Wisconsin. Payne, who netted a goal in Friday s game, recorded two shorthanded goals and three assists to reach the five-point plateau, which was last accomplished by Mike Santorelli (2g-3a) in a 5-2 win at Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 21, 2006. The teams entered the final frame deadlocked at four apiece. Darien Craighead netted his second of the game to give Northern Michigan the lead just over two minutes in, but the Badgers responded with two unanswered strikes to secure the victory. Two of Payne s plays were highlight reel worthy. He set up Darien Craighead s first career goal in the middle of the second period by corralling a loose puck on his knees and sliding it through traffic. Just over two minutes later, he scored his second shorthanded goal after disrupting a Badger breakout and pulling Matt Jurusik out of the net with a fake for a tap-in goal. Payne also tied a Northern Michigan school record with his two shorthanded tallies. Only six Wildcats have netted that number in one game, with J.P. Vigier being the last at Michigan Tech on Oct. 9, 1999. Game 3 Oct. 14 Berry Events Center (1,810) Bemidji State 1 0 1 2 Northern Michigan 0 0 0 0 1st period: BSU, L. Leo Fitzgerald s first-period goal proved to be the game winner as Michael Bitzer made 21 saves to out-duel Tolvanen. A power play goal by Jay Dickman at 10:57 of the final stanza capped the scoring for the Beavers. Jay Dickman and Kyle Bauman found the back of the net less than five minutes apart in the first period. Before Bemidji State pulled off its back-to-back shutouts, the last time Northern Michigan was blanked in back-to-back games was Nov. 22 and 28, 2014 at Alaska-Anchorage (4-0) and Alaska (3-0). Freshmen factored into four of the tallies, helping the Wildcats capture their first WCHA victory of the season. In a wild first period, the teams combined to score six of the game s 10 goals, including four on special teams. After Filip Starzynski drew Northern Michigan within one during the middle stanza, Luke Voltin evened the score at 5:39 of the final frame. On a man advantage, Darien Craighead, who finished the night with three points (2g-1a), found Philip Beaulieu in the slot. Instead of taking the shot, Beaulieu slid the puck over to Voltin by the left post for the score. Less than six minutes later, Denver Pierce gave the Wildcats a 5-4 lead with his first career shorthanded goal. Pierce stripped a Bulldog of the puck, rushed down the ice and then beat Darren Smith top-shelf with a sharp-angle shot. Northern Michigan last overcame a two-period deficit on Dec. 30, 2015 against Michigan State at the Great Lakes Invitational. The Wildcats last scored at least six goals in a single game on Oct. 16, 2015 against Lake Superior State (6-3) and last had a six-goal outburst on the road on Jan. 4, 2013 at St. Cloud State (6-2).
